Urquhart Castle in the Scottish Highlands

Do mine eyes deceive me? A travel post?! It’s only (hah) been about a year since I went to Scotland! :O! My apologies for super slacking in the realms of Travel Tuesday posts, but I’m back with one today on Urquhart Castle, and hopefully with many more to follow! (Someone please keep me accountable. >_>)

If you missed my previous post on climbing Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, be sure to check that out! I have a bunch more travel posts from Scotland to share…and also of Ithaca…and several other places. We’ll hopefully get to all of em’ by the end of this year! :P

Urquhart Castle in the Scottish Highlands

The Urquhart Castle is situated right next to Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands! It’s one of the biggest castles in Scotland and offers an awesome panoramic view of the lake.

You also get to see Loch Ness, which, if you were anything like I was when I was little and super interested in things like whether the Loch Ness Monster existed/wanted to meet Nessie (we did not meet Nessie), it’s definitely worth a trip! This is probably for the best though.

Address: A82 Road, Drumnadrochit IV63 6XJ, Scotland
Admission Fee: £4.00 (Adult)
Parking: Free! (If I recall correctly…)

Urquhart Castle is open on every day of the year from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30-6 p.m. (depending on what time of year!) The castle is closed on December 25-26 and when there’s adverse weather. Last entry is ~45 minutes prior to closing!

Urquhart Castle was taken over by the English in 1296 and re-taken over by other entities multiple times until 1692, when its gatehouse was blown up to prevent it from ever becoming a military stronghold again.

This castle passed into state care in 1913 and has been a super popular place to visit since then!

They also have a ginormous full-sized + working trebuchet!

On a quest for adventure and haven't ever been to the Scottish Highlands? Check out the Urquhart Castle with me (+ see if we managed to spot Nessie!) #urquhartcastle #scotland #lochness #travel #castles

  • Are you disappointed that I didn’t find Nessie?
  • Have you ever been to a castle?

  2. Aw, I’m sorry you didn’t find Nessie. Beautiful photos though! I think it would be lovely to go to Scotland someday. And don’t worry about being behind on travel posts – I went to London in Sept. 2016 and I STILL haven’t done any of my posts. I swear they are coming – this summer, I hope. :)

  10. What a cool place to explore! I’ve always wanted to go to Scotland!!

I don’t know if I’ve ever been to a real castle – but there’s a little one in our park. It wasn’t a royal castle though – just something built in the Great Depression to provide jobs for locals and then they turned it into a kiosk to provide further jobs.

  13. We went on a trip to Scotland last September! We drove around the entire country and stopped at Urquhart castle. However, we spent too much time at Stirling Castle and we were late to Urquhart and arrived too late for the last entry. So all we got to do was stand at the fence in the parking lot and look at it. Super dissapointed haha. But it was still really neat to look at it!

    1. haha, I feel ya! That’s what happened with us and the Eilean Donan Castle! I’m glad we got to at least check out the exterior though! :]!
