Welcome to another Ultimate Coffee Date! I cannot believe we’re already at the second-last coffee date of the year. Where has the time gone!?
Ultimate Coffee Date: November 2023
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…it’s officially been 4 years since I started working at my current workplace! This is extra exciting to me mainly because at year 4, we start accumulating an extra week of vacation in the year (yayyy!!). The next “jump” up in vacation is at the 11 year mark, so I’ve got a while to wait on that one, haha.
Lately I’ve been kinda frustrated because the place I work for gives the false impression to patients that what they’re getting is concierge medicine when in fact it is not. (For reference, concierge medicine physicians usually have a panel of ~400-600 patients and only see 6-10 patients per day. I am supposed to have no more than 2100 patients but instead am fast approaching 2700.) This of course is leading to all kinds of failed expectations, but, ya win some, ya lose some.
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I haven’t dressed up in Halloween for ages, but one of my friends at work approached me a couple weeks ago with her idea for her costume this year and asked if I’d join in (“I swear it’s not because you’re Asian!” hahaha). When I heard who she wanted to be, I couldn’t resist.
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I’m linking up with Lauren over at Shooting Stars Mag on Tuesday again for her “My Month is Booked” linkup!
This past month, I finished reading (all as audiobooks because yay for commutes)…
A Prayer for the Crown-Shy, by Becky Chambers – This is the second book in the Monk and Robot series about the protagonist and a robot’s quest to find out what humanity needs. The best way I can describe this + A Psalm for the Wild-Built (the first book) is that it’s a cozy, peaceful read that makes you feel like a warm cup of tea. The dedication for this book is “for anybody who doesn’t know where they’re going” and I think it definitely accomplished that!
Songs of the Humpback Whale, by Jodi Picoult – This is the first novel by one of my favorite authors, published back in 1992. It’s told in several different viewpoints by a handful of main characters, all in first person and not in chronological order. (Although I love a lot of her other books, I unfortunately didn’t enjoy this one very much.)
The Bandit Queens, by Parini Shroff – This is our county’s book pick for its annual reading event + is about a woman whose village thinks she murdered her husband + is doing quite well with her own business + freedom, so much so that other women start approaching her to ask if she can help them get rid of theirs. The author is local + will be popping by later this month for in-person discussions at multiple libraries so I’m gonna try to go to one of em’. I really enjoyed this book! She has talent for weaving in all kinds of complex issues (misogyny, abuse, the patriarchy, women’s rights, the social castes, etc.) with dark humor + if she writes more, I definitely hope to read her future novels!

What great book rec’s! I will be checking out Jodi’s book and the Bandit one!!
1. I am a teacher, so I really do not get any time off per say, I do get a week for winter break and spring break, plus I do have summers off (unpaid) But unfortunately, Its difficult to put in a week vacation during the year if I were to go away
2. Halloween is my LEAST fave day, again, as a teacher, it is chaos, it is fun seeing the kids excited but by the end of the day I am ready for QUIET! ha. I did go for a nice long walk and spotted some cute costumes along my trek , that was good enough for me!
3. I am going to see my mama in SC next week!! So excited and fingers crossed for some warmer days!
That makes sense. Is summer truly a vacation for you or do you have to spend a lot of it preparing for the year? :[
I can see how that would be super chaotic. I’m glad you got to go for a walk though and I hope you have fun in SC!

Not enough vacation. 3 weeks or so.
I worked from home so no costume.
My vacations are in different parts of Florida. I plan to go to Tampa in Dec, Delray in Feb and Naples in May.
It never feels like enough vacation — I’d love to get some 4-day workweeks someday, hehe.
I hope you have fun!

Your costumes were great! I just work black and dug out some old “jewlery” from my not-quite-goth high school phase.
That last book sounds interesting. I am in the middle of The Heaven And Earth Grocery Store. I also am in the middle of The Covenant of Water but it’s LONG and I’m not really into it.
Thanks for joining us for coffee!
hehe, nice! :D I’ve heard of The Covenant of Water but haven’t read it yet.
Thanks for hosting!
Your costumes are fab! That is a lot of patients to juggle at a time. You sure do work hard
I dream of going part time, but I feel bad because that’d make it so a bunch of my patients would have to find a new doctor. :[ Someday though…
Grr! I get NO paid vacation at my job. The good news is I can request time off pretty much any time I want. The bad news is a don’t get paid for any days I’m away. I haven’t taken a real vacation in a while- I tend to just request days off for certain events, like taking my daughter to Tampa in January and traveling for my race in February.
Ha ha… love the poem! No one has ever written a poem for me- you must be very good at what you do.
Ahh, the no paid vacations part sucks, but it’s nice to be able to take off whatever days you want! I hope you have a great time in Tampa + have fun at the race!
Thank you! :] I get swamped a lot but still trying to stay afloat!
I haven’t dressed up in ages either – your costumes were so good!
Congrats on 4 years and getting the extra vacation time!
hehe, this was the first time in ages for me, but it was really fun! I might do it again next year — we’ll see what my friend wants to do. :P
Awhhhh, my oldest daughter loved Mulan!!!! I love Halloween, but it’s been a few years since there have been any parties, LOL. It’s a fun holiday, but it was bitterly cold here (barely above freezing and windy). Congrats on the 4-year milestone ;-)
hehe, she was my favorite too since she’s so badass!! Boo on the cold though!!
Thank you!

I am excited to hear you’ll get an extra week holiday – I guess that means extra hikes for 2024!? Woot woot!
