Ultimate Coffee Date: June 2024

Welcome to the June’s Ultimate Coffee Date! Can you believe it’s almost summertime already?!

Ultimate Coffee Date: June 2024

Screenshot from a video my parents took for me of one of the hulas with ‘uli ‘uli’s!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…May was a pretty stressful month,  but for once, it was not because of work! For everyone who’s been around here for years, I’ve written sporadically about Polynesian dancing in here (twas my side hustle when I was in residency!)…

Twas one of my 101 in 1001 goals to join a halau, so I did, and it was my halau’s hō’ike (~recital) last weekend! :]

Learning to French-braid my hair has forever been on my 101 in 1001 list, and it’s largely because of Polynesian, haha. Since I still haven’t managed to master it though, I got a crimper and it was infinitely easier. My hair really, really likes to straighten itself, but this actually seems to have done the job!

Please excuse the RBF, haha.

You can see a little piece of one of the other hulas on IG! I was in 7 different dances this year, so it was a little hectic, especially in the week leading up to it! (My friend was in 12, so I ain’t really even overachieving here.) I’m planning on joining back in on Tahitian starting next week though, so maybe I’ll end up doing that next year too — we shall see!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I was originally going to go to Florida for a conference earlier this month, but with so much stuff going on, I decided to do a mini stay-cation instead and went on a hike + rock climbing outdoors with my friend.

Tofu looks so tired here, haha. He learned to cross a bunch of streams!

No photos of me actually climbing up there since it was just us two — safety first!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…if you read and/or blog about reading, you should stop by the My Month Is Booked linkup! I took over from Lauren and it’s been quite helpful for motivating me to get through my ever-growing to-read list! :D

End-of-Month Recap

  • I completely failed at my One Room Challenge, haha. :[ All the things I had planned would’ve taken way too much time/work (our recital was originally supposed to be at the end of April, so I thought I’d have time when I first signed up). At least I got my pegboard up though!?
  • Here is last month’s My Month Is Booked!
  • If you are a fan of Asian desserts, you’ll probably want to pick this book up!

  • Do you have any travels/vacations/staycations planned?
  • What’s new in your life?

  1. How cool that you did Polynesian dancing as a side hustle during residency. As you’ll see in my coffee talk, my hair is the exact opposite of yours. ;-)

GREAT PICS! I love what the crimper did for your hair! You’re so beautiful!
I’m fortunate I got to see you dance at WVSOM because you were amazing!
Truly wish I could see more of your recitals!
    Tofu looks so cute!

  5. Oh my gosh I bet the dancing is so much fun!

I’ve never been able to master braiding my hair – l like the way your hair came out with the crimper!

    1. It was! :D

Same same — I can do super simple braids but French braid…lol. :'( One day…

  6. Congrats on the dance recital! What a fun way to balance out the stress of your job. Tofu is the cutest! That climb looks intense! No epic travels are planned here this summer. We’re going to be laying low for now.

    1. Thank you! I feel you on laying low — I want to travel but also feel like I just need a staycation to just relax/catch up on sleep.

  7. Wow. Your hair looks great. My hair is naturally curly (and frizzy in the humidity). I always wanted straight hair.

Polynesian dancing?! That is so cool. You are multi talented.

    You climbed that!!!! Yikes.

    1. Thank you! The crimper and a wholeee ton of hairspray helped a lot, hehe.

I joined a Polynesian dance club in college and always wanted to join a halau so I’m really happy that I’ve found this one! :D

  8. Oh, the dancing looks fun! You look great!

My hair is baby fine and straight as grass — there’s not much I can do with it.

I’m enjoying your book link up!

    1. Thank you! :]

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! It’s been encouraging me to read more!

  9. The dancing looks like so much fun! Did you climb that? That looks intense. Way to go!

    1. Thank you! I made it up the right side of the route, but not the left, haha. Maybe next time though!!

  10. Your hula is amazing! And your hair looks beautiful crimped.

What part of Florida were you planning to visit?

I have a few Orlando trips planned (friends), a trip to Gainesville, and one to Tennessee.

That’s quite a cliff you climbed! I don’t think rock climbing is my jam, although I do love to hike.

    Hi, Tofu!

    1. Thank you! <3

I was originally going to the Keys (there was a medical conference there and I figured it'd be cool to dive while I was out there too!), but hopefully somewhere in the next several years, I can make that happen!

Hiking is my jam too! I do that a lot more than climbing, but have been wanting to get back into the latter again.

      He says hello too! :P

  11. We love a good staycation! That’s wonderful. And congrats on your recital – that’s so many dances, but how fun you did it!!
