Welcome to the Ultimate Coffee Date! This…is a really difficult time right now for so, so many people in this country.
Ultimate Coffee Date: June 2020
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…ask how you’re all doing. I wanted to use today’s coffee date to check in on everyone. It feels like with each month that passes, more and more terrible things happen. (Did anyone see that meme on how someone must have started a game of Jumanji in January and really, really needs to finish it?
I’ve been partially avoiding social media much lately other than to check in on friends to make sure they’re doing okay. I hope your families and loved ones are healthy and safe, and I sincerely hope that positive change will come out of this. I’ve been really disheartened lately by the things I’ve seen people saying.
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that at work, we’re still following state guidelines on when to [slowly] open back up. Our schedules are less straight-up virtual medicine via telephone/video visits and now have the occasional actual in-office visits scattered in there again.
It’s honestly been refreshing getting to see my (and my colleagues’) patients in person again. I was in for an afternoon shift and our building got evacuated preemptively in case the protests got violent. (We’re all okay though!)
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that my brother and I drove into the middle of Sierra National Forest and went dispersed-camping a couple weekends ago! I finally got to try out my hammock camping set-up (that was my original plan for lodging for most of my cross-country road trip last summer before I decided to go into the desert where there were no trees).
See past ultimate coffee dates here!

- Have you picked up any new hobbies or activities? Lately I’ve been logging a whole lot of hours on my Nintendo Switch. Since one of my dreams was to learn fire hooping, I’m thinking of teaching myself to hoop so I’ll be one step closer to that.

Things have been so challenging this year. We can only hope that some good comes from all of this. 99% of what I see on social media is positive, but the negative stuff is definitely still there. But I know the reason I see what I see is because of who I am following, so it worries me how many other people are doing/saying hateful things.
That hammock looks so comfy! Glad you were able to get away and use it.
Very true! Most of what I see has been positive, but I did live for a couple years in some of the more conservative states and seeing the things some of them have written when I thought of them as kind/good people has just been…difficult. I really hope that there will be positive change after all of this.
What a year it’s been so far. Between Covid and George Floyd, I’ve learned more about people in my life than I cared to. It’s been really disheartening. I had to address it on my post today. I hope things get better.
I’ve never heard of dispersed camping! I’d love to learn more.
Right? Some of it is coming from people I thought highly of and my mind is just having trouble wrapping around the disconnect right now. :/ I really hope things get better too!
I called up the park ranger and he told me dispersed camping was still okay–basically it just means camping in a national forest outside of a designated campsite (so no trash removal, toilet facilities, fire pits, etc. available there, but still campable)! :]
So, how was the hammock? LOL on it not being the right gear for the desert. It’s rough seeing what’s going on around the country, but hopefully some real change will come out of it? We’ve said that before though …. Thanks for joining us for coffee!
It was super comfy! I’ve been so excited to see how it’d work out — I got to see the night sky and star above me while my hammock gently rocked me to sleep. :D
Exactly. :( I’m scared to hope, but I really do still want to believe in the good of others.
Camping amongst the trees and forest sounds like a delightful escape! Thanks for checkin in via coffee today.
It was definitely much needed! *-* Thank you for hosting!

Is that hammock as comfy as it looks? I’d love to get one, but we don’t really have a suitable place to put one in our yard.
It is suuuuper comfy! I loved not having to sleep on the ground, and it was awesome being able to see the night sky above me as it gently rocked me to sleep! :] I’m probably a biased party, but I’d definitely recommend, hehe. The one I have is an ENO DoubleNest, but I think there are cheaper ones out there. This has basically cemented the fact that I’m gonna want 2 sturdy trees in my future yard (if I ever get to buy a house!)!
I love the visual on your hammock! I’m fascinated by AT thru hikers (while having zero desire to thru hike), and many have written about their hammocks. So it’s nice to finally see what they wrote about.
hehe, I’d so love to do that someday (both AT and PCT), but given my current job, I’m not entirely sure that’s ever gonna get to happen. I’d definitely want to bring my hammock though! *-*
Thanks for checking in on us, Farrah. I get discouraged by some of the posts on social media too. I used to roll my eyes and scroll right past them. I have now decided I am going to post some replies. I will not get into a protracted argument, but I just want other like-minded people know that it’s ok to post love rather than hate, peace rather than conflict, and reconciliation rather than discord. I don’t want to be part of the problem – I want to be part of the solution.

That’s definitely a good and much needed approach! <3 I feel like at the moment, I'm not quite as educated or articulate enough on these matters to speak up on them, so I'm trying to amplify the voices of those who are more eloquent in the meantime while I do more reading/learn more about how I can best help.
When the pandemic started I joked about the Zombie Apocalypse. At this point I’m thinking a Zombie Apocalypse would pale in comparison to what we’re going through.
Love the idea of hammock camping!
My pandemic project has been a YouTube channel, which is waaay out of my comfort zone.
haha, seriously. I definitely did not expect 2020 to be like this.
Nice! Props to you! I’ve floated the idea in my head a couple times, but I really don’t like me on video, so never went through with it. :P
Dispersed camping sounds like a wonderful getaway. You know that my husband and I love the National Parks, too. He’s done this type of camping, but I’ve only camped within campsites.

Much love to the National Parks! <3 I'm hoping to get to all of them at some point (hopefully)! I'm glad we can still go outdoors right now!
This year has exhausted me and I find it hard to believe that we’re not even at the half-way point.
I have had to step away from a lot of social media too – seeing the arguments/comments has just been too much!
Right?! People have been talking about how it’s great that 2020 is half over, but…still not even there yet, haha. Fingers crossed for positive change in November.
Such a challenging time for sure! Trying to focus on the positive – this time has allowed me to focus on my masters dissertation. Which means that I am now far ahead of my original time plan and will most likely hand in my dissertation 3-4 weeks early.
I think being able to focus on the positive is definitely important right now. That’s awesome that you’ve made so much progress on your dissertation! :] Major props!!
2020 has def been a crazy and sad year but I think change to improve America will happen.
And I started up yoga!
I really hope so!! Fingers crossed. *-*
Nice! I keep meaning to get back into that again!!
