Hi everyone! What’s been going in your life? Pull up a chair and come catch up on life with me for the Ultimate Coffee Date!
For me, it’ll be tea (or bubble tea) because I only drink coffee a couple times a year, if even that!
Ultimate Coffee Date: June 2017
If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…I’m compiling a New Jersey/East Coast/Residency bucket list! If you’ve got any suggestions for places I need to visit/explore/eat at, let me know in the comments!
(For reference, I’m a fan of delicious/inexpensive food and outdoorsy things–e.g. hikes, beaches, waterfalls.)
If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…my grad school friends and I got to have a mini-reunion of sorts a couple weekends ago! We decided to meet up in Princeton and had a breakfast of crepes before setting out to go canoeing on the Delaware + Raritan Canal!
Our board games of choice back in grad school were Settlers of Catan and Munchkin–for backstabbery and fun times galore. We used to play til 3-4 a.m. some nights! Tis a wonder we escaped with our friendship intact! :P Cards Against Humanity is also a winner in my book, and I have a new game to add to the mix (for my inner nerd): Organ ATTACK! (Not a sponsored post, but that is an affiliate link!)
I supported the kickstarter last year and got a deck of playing cards + the expansion along with it–the objective is to destroy your friends’/opponents’ organs with different afflictions/ailments! It was developed by one of my favorite webcomics, The Awkward Yeti, and the illustrations are absolutely adorable!
If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…the application deadline for fellowship tracks is quickly approaching and I’m hoping I’ll get into the sports medicine one! (I’m trying to figure out a way to tie it into my love for community medicine/nutrition/preventive medicine as well–we’ll see how that goes!)
I’m also trying to figure out how to eloquently state my interest in sports medicine other than the fact that I think it’ll be fun. (…pretty sure that won’t fly.) I had a lot of fun on my Orthopedic Surgery + Sports Medicine rotations in medical school and also in concussion clinic on my med school rotation ever (Pediatrics), and I majored in Exercise Biology in undergrad and would love to find a way to tie it all together + learn more…? Hopefully I’ll come up with something more cohesive soon!
If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…I’d tell you that I’ve set a new record for how many pieces of sushi/sashimi I can consume in one sitting! A couple years back, I was here in between rotations and ate 60 pieces of sashimi and 5 8-piece rolls on my own. (I was stressed, what can I say.)
Upon discovering that one of my friends here was moving away and hadn’t ever been to the sushi buffet (we both went to Davis, land of the sushi buffets), I suggested we go there before he left! We may or may not have starved throughout the day so we could eat more, but…the two of us collectively packed down over 300 pieces–and of course left room for ice cream! The staff was giving us concerned looks.
See past ultimate coffee dates here!

Cards Against Humanity are very much my new favourite thing, though I am a little terrified by how well my mum plays! I got it for Christmas and I don’t think I have laughed so hard for ages.
Good luck compiling your residency bucket list! I am afraid I have zero tips, having never travelled to the States, but my husband is a huge Austin fan (though I appreciate that is nowhere near where you’re currently looking!).

It’s so much fun! :P That’s awesome that your mom plays–I don’t think my parents would understand the game, haha.
Thanks so much! I’ve heard amazing things about Austin and have a blog friend I’d really love to visit there, so it’s definitely on my travel bucket list (vs. my residency one :P )!
I am a sucker for fun board games too! Good luck with that bucket list! I love seeing what you are up to as you continue through your doctor journey! I think sports medicine is a great choice! You sure know how to get your monies worth at the buffet- I can’t believe you packed in that much sushi ! Have a great weekend!

Thanks so much! :]! I’m really excited about all the opportunities up ahead!
haha, this tends to only happen at sushi buffets! :P
Hope you have a wonderful weekend as well!!
Organ Attack sounds like a game made for Med Students! :-) We like Ticket to Ride. Good luck with the application. I always struggle writing things like that. You don’t want to sound too gushy, but you need to show genuine interest, etc.

hahaha, it’s perfect! :P I haven’t had a chance to play Ticket to Ride yet but I’ve heard of it!
Agreed! I’ll keep working on it–I know they already know I’m really interested–I just gotta put it in writing!
Sports medicine would be my jam too! I just went to a sports medicine conference a couple weeks ago and it was right up my alley. I’d love to learn more. I hope you get accepted.

Wow girl, that is a lot of sushi, haha!!! Good luck on the fellowship – you have so many great options!!

hahaha, I eat way too much when it comes to sushi! :P
Thank you! I really need to get on that personal statement soon!
OK, what is bubble tea?
For you bucket list…. add Wildwood and Niagara Falls!
Author
Ooo, Niagara Falls is on my list but I haven’t heard of Wildwood! Definitely going to have to add that one! It looks like a lot of fun! :]
Sports medicine sounds great and combines many of your passions for sure. We love board games too and usually have some heated Scrabble games around here. Thanks for joining for coffee date today

Agreed! :D I just need to find a way to eloquently put that down into writing! Fingers crossed! :]
Hope you have a great weekend, and thanks for hosting!
Your sushi consumption has definitely left me speechless! I can’t imagine we have more than 300 pieces of sushi in a single location down here where I live :P And I am totally with you on sports medicine sounding like fun – I’m sure you’ll figure out how to make it sound better than that!
Author
hehehe, I’m glad they had that many pieces. We were definitely stuffed! :P
Thank you! I’ll keep tryin’!
BRING ME TO THAT SUSHI BUFFET RIGHTTTTT NOW! I WILL FLYYYYYYYYY to where you liveeee!

Yessss! How have you been lately!? (Actually, let me just text you, haha.)
This is why I know we’d be friends in real life, too (rather than just online). You just want cheap-ish food places to eat and outdoorsy things for recommendations – that sounds just like me! And the board games sound really cool, I haven’t played any of those except Cards Against Humanity. We just got the expansion packs for Cards Against Humanity as a wedding gift. :) Also a thank-you card for your wedding gift to us should be ready in the next month! I was waiting for our wedding pictures to come back so create personalized thank-you cards first.

Agreed! :D This is why I’m gonna have to finagle a trip to Austin to visit sometime! Apparently next year’s sports med conference is in Orlando and the one after is in San Diego, so it mighttt have to be after I’m done with residency but it’s gonna have to happen one way or another! ;_;
Yay! I’m super glad you got it! (So glad Amazon exists, haha. It makes life so much easier! :P I got to play CAH with the expansion packs at my friend’s place a few years ago and it was a ton of fun! :D!
Hope you and Wade had a ton of fun in Costa Rica! The pictures were so pretty! :]!

You're making me hungry, haha. I need to eat a real breakfast!! :P
Oh gosh, I don’t know what East Coast things to do. Hmm…I’ll have to think about that though! I hope you can find a way to say that you want to do sports medicine that will come across well. Can you talk about your personal love for sports?

Haha Mia and I love sashimi, never eaten that much but I can totally see why. WHenever we are both stressed eating is the way to go :)
Author
haha, it honestly is probably a good idea to not eat that much–we went a tadddd bit overboard.
Stress eating ftw! :P
Organ Attack looks fun! My family loves Scatagories.
Good luck with your fellowship applications! I hope you land something that interests you and challenges you at the same time.

A beer float? With ice cream?! I never would have thought of that!
Actually I just looked it up and I’m guessing a Birch Beer isn’t actual beer? But more like a soda? Like root beer?

haha, yep! I cant have alcohol so I’m glad it wasn’t actual beer (I thought it was at first too, but they told me it was more like root beer and they weren’t wrong! :O )!
