Welcome to the first Ultimate Coffee Date of the year! I know this is typically Foodie Friday, but we’ve decided to switch to the 2nd and 4th Friday’s of every month! If we end up being more prolific with recipes again, we might change it back, but feel free to link up with us next week! :]
Ultimate Coffee Date: January 2019
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…ask how your holidays went! I’ve worked the last two Christmases at the hospital (day shift in 2017 and night shift last year), so I didn’t really celebrate, but I liked getting to live vicariously through everyone else!
Although I didn’t get to do much for Christmas, I still had something to look forward to! Linda flew me over to West Virginia so I could spend New Year’s with her at the farm! :]!
Things I found out include…the fact that Muffin is apparently a wonderful flight buddy! She was more well-behaved than the babies and kids on my flight!
If you follow me on instagram or facebook, you’ve probably been seeing me with all kinds of cute animals, but just in case, here are some more! <3

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that Match Day for sports medicine fellowships was on Wednesday (1/2/19)! (Can you believe that my residency match day was 3 years ago?!)
Remember that time where I interviewed at 4 places in 3 states in 3 days? (North Carolina, New Jersey, California.) Well, those were the 3 states I ended up interviewing at for sports medicine fellowship programs! I didn’t end up matching into a fellowship program, so it looks like I’ll probbbbably be going home a year early (and now I’ll get to go on my cross-country National Park road trip/food tour!
If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…ask if you have anything exciting planned for the rest of this year!
See past ultimate coffee dates here!

I have been loving all the animal pictures! Glad you had a great holiday.
Glad you have been! They were such a fun bunch to hang out with! :]!
Aww, sorry to hear you didn’t match! So will you apply again next year? And will you work this year? Your XC trip sounds interesting and I’m excited to hear more about it.
Happy New Year!
It’s okay! I’m excited to hopefully get to be near my family/close friends again–I’ve been gone for pretty much a decade at this point! :/ I’m probably just gonna apply for jobs now, although I may request a later start date because I kinda want a small break to travel! *-* I’ll do more planning for that after I take my boards!
Happy New Year to you as well! :]
The pic with the goose is adorable…”goose hug” ;-)
hehehe, I love Waldo! He’s super soft too! <3
You did have a ton of animal interaction! Sorry about the matching programs. That cross country trip sounds super fun can’t wait to hear more
All good! Whether or not I matched, it was gonna be a win–this just means I probably get to go home earlier than planned! :P I’m looking forward to starting the planning for that trip!
Sorry about not matching but congrats about being able to travel. Looking forward to hearing about the trip.
No worries! I’m looking forward to hopefully getting a little break–just gotta figure out all the places I want to go to along the way home now! :P
Sorry to hear that you didn’t match. I think your cross-country trip sounds exciting! So many beautiful national parks to visit. I think my favorite is Yosemite, but all the Utah parks are beautiful too. If you decide to visit the Gettysburg National Military Park (the site of the battle of Gettysburg), let me know. It’s a great place to run!

Agreed!! I’ll definitely have to let you know if I pass by there! The Utah parks are definitely on my list, and I reallyy need to explore Yosemite more! I lived 4 hours away from it for almost 2 decades but never really got to visit much while I was there! :[
Sorry about the matching. Love the animal pictures :)
All good! I always have a billion backup plans in place! :P
So many cute animal pictures! I know a lot of friends who were waiting on Match Day results. It sounds like such a stressful process!

It definitely can be! I was a lot less stressed for this one than I was for residency, so at least there was that! :P
The animals were so cute! It was hard to leave them/my friend! :[! At least I have my cat with me though! :]

Those are great animal pics. Love them all!
They were so adorable! <3!
Sorry about the matching. I like the sound of your cross-country trip!
All good! I felt like either outcome has something positive that would come out of it, so I’m looking forward to being with my family/friends again + getting to travel!
I can’t believe you didn’t match, but I’m sure you’ve got great things ahead. Hopefully the parks will be open and cleaned up for your trip. :-/
Thanks for joining us for coffee!
I think there were a ton of really awesome candidates this year so the programs I interviewed at probably just liked them more than they liked me. I’ll be okay though–I’m happy with the prospect of traveling/delicious food/family/friends 1 year earlier! :P
Ughhh, I really hope so too. I hate that this is happening to our country! :[ I have 6 months til this happens though, so here’s to hoping!
Thanks for hosting! :]
Oh, I love all the adorable animals!
I’m sorry about the sports fellowship. It does sounds like you have a great plan in place instead and I look forward to reading about your travels
They were so cute! <3!
Thank you! :] My "backup" plan was just as attractive to me as getting the fellowship, so I'm a-okay! Hopefully I'll be able to catch up on all my pending travel posts so I won't be posting them years later, hahaha.

I love all the animals, too cute! My favorite would have to be the goose. :)
Stinks about not matching a program, maybe something better will come along soon.

hehehe, Waldo is universally loved! <3
Thank you! It's okay--it'll be nice to get to see my family/closest friends again a year early!
sorry that you didn’t match! do you know though what sort of job/area you’ll be applying for in the near future? It’s good that you see the silver lining! Cross-Country trips can be so amazing! So where should you go? I’d say you need to see the Badlands if you haven’t already, you should definitely go to Graceland :) and if you have a chance go through New Mexico and at least see the Alien museum in Roswell and White Sands National Monument outside of Alamogordo (that’s where I’m from by the way!). Bryce Canyon in Utah is Amazing too. And maybe head over to Hollywood and check out the Dead Celebrities Tour. It’s weird, but fun.
I have so many exciting things planned for this year – travel will be less because we both got into Chicago marathon and there’s a good chance we have to pay for most of our lodging (my friends with whom we stayed the last time are moving to DC; my other two friends have a tiny apartment and a husband and 4 kids respectively so…that could be tricky). Loads of races already on the calendar, I’ll be seeing my parents again in May (yay!) in Spain. So, running and travel and focusing on goals this year (I guess it’s same as every year haha! )
It’s okay! I’m going to be applying for an outpatient family medicine position somewhere–most likely in CA, but I think I’d be cool with Hawai’i, Washington, Oregon or Colorado too!
I haven’t been to any of the places you mentioned other than Hollywood, so I’m definitely going to have to add those to my list! Thanks so much for all your suggestions! :]
That sounds like a good plan for the year! I don’t run much, but I like to fit in random fitness classes or hikes whenever I go to a new place to explore! I feel ya on not having places to stay in places I used to visit/want to visit again sometime–a lot of my friends have moved away too!
Super random place to include on your road trip – excelsior springs, Missouri. My hubby and I went there on vacation and it was SO cute. We stayed at a little bed and breakfast and there were lots of trails to walk around, tons of local wineries, a few really old local restaurants – just a really neat place to visit. And it’s only about a half hour from Kansas City.
Ooo, that sounds like a town I’d love to explore–I’ll definitely have to keep that in mind! Thanks for your suggestion! :]!
Sorry about the matching, but a cross country road trip is something I’ve always wanted to do, and probably never will — I’m sure you won’t regret it.
Is Muffin your cat? I’m impressed you flew with him just for a visit! We flew our 2 cats & 2 dogs halfway across the country (in 2 separate trips) — it’s not something I would ever choose to do if I didn’t have to!
I didn’t think I’d get to do it, but I’m super excited for it! :]! I can’t wait to start planning! *-*
Yep, she is! I usually take her with me when I go back to WV because my friend is there and misses her too (my friend runs the cat rescue I adopted her from <3). She's super calm and pretty good with travel so I figured it'd be ok–it was kinda a test run too for when I move back to the west coast, so I'm kinda glad to know she'll be okay with that!

I’m sorry, Farrah. That is definitely their loss. I found out before Christmas that I didn’t get my NYC fellowship either. It’s disappointing, but I know you won’t let it get you down. You’re truly an amazing physician and person and, fellowship or not, there is no way anyone can limit your potential. You show them!
Thank you so much! <3 I'm sorry you didn't get the NYC fellowship! It's also their loss, but I like to think that we'll get to where we're meant to be regardless of the fellowships! :]
Sorry to hear you didn’t match. I’m sure that’s a popular fellowship. We didn’t match for oncoming fellows, so now we have the scramblers coming through for interviews. We’ll see how that goes. I have a few races planned for next year, including London and Chicago, so I am hoping to keep up with the training and stay injury free. Happy new year!
No worries! It’s the most competitive fellowship for family medicine, but I thought it’d be fun to try to do. I hope you end up with good people over there!
Good luck with your training and I definitely hope you stay injury-free too! Happy new year!
Happy New Year! National Parks road trip sounds amazing to me! We want to check out Glacier National Park sometime. The photos there look incredible. My husband’s favorites are the ones in Utah. Best wishes to you!
Happy new year to you too! :] I’d love to go to Glacier National Park sometime too! I’ve never been to Utah but those parks are definitely on my list! *-* Thank you!
Your cross-country trip touring National Parks sounds amazing! My husband and I took a few similar trips when we were your age. Now we’re planning one for this summer with our two adult sons and their wife and girlfriend. We’ll be flying into Southern Utah and staying there, though.

Happy New Year! Looks like you had quality time with lots of cute animals. How great muffin was good on the plane. Sorry a match didn’t happen but going home sooner and getting a break sound wonderful!
Happy New Year! I’m sorry you didn’t match into a fellowship program, but whooo for a cross country road trip. I think it’s mean to be. I’m not sure where you should go as I haven’t been to that many states, but if you are in Northern Kentucky or Cincinnati, Ohio, I will totally come hang with you!
And omg, all those animals!! So cute. I’m glad your cat was a great travel companion. :)
