Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2024

Welcome to February’s Ultimate Coffee Date! What’s been going on in your life lately?

Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2024

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I was struck down by yet another bout of laryngitis last week and it sucked. (Severe coughing fits to the point of throwing up whenever I tried to speak.) I actually called off work for 3 days straight (something I’ve never done) in hopes that taking a vow of silence would help (whilst also downing copious amounts of water/tea with honey, going through bags of cough drops, and the like).

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I recently got back into bullet journaling to try to get my life back on track. (I feel like I’m behind in everything/used to do so much more…)

Getting sick kinda derailed a whole lotta my would-be activities. ;_;

My friend + I were going to do a Bob Ross painting/baking day. Butttt we got sidetracked with catching up on life, hanging out with her cats, and watching YouTube videos. Since she’s also trying to get back into doing artsy/creative things again, we’re planning on trying to meet up every other month to make that happen! (Yay for accountability + also seeing each other more than once a year!)

I finally broke out my watercolor brush pens to play around with em’ + I really like the effects! *-*

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I recently rediscovered/remembered that I have a NetGalley account. Due to my foolishly trying to take on reviewing a bunch of books at a time when I was still in medical school, my feedback % is terrible. I’ve been making up for it this month and have gone through a bunch of books as a result!

(Will be linking up with Lauren over at Shooting Stars Mag on Tuesday for her upcoming “My Month is Booked!”)

Modern Asian Kitchen – I have this author’s other book, Modern Asian Baking (review will be coming up on the blog in a couple weeks!) and was thrilled to find out she was coming up with another book on non-baked items! (I’m not the best of bakers, but have been trying to get back into cooking!)

One Night in a Thousand Years – Based on a similar experience the author had while growing up, this follows a high school senior who joins a youth group that meets weekly, but the leader is an unconventional one who encourages the young men to think outside the box of what they think is expected of them + to try to find out what they truly want from life and how to be the best versions of themselves. I liked this idea a lot and feel men would be better-adjusted in society if they had a group like this or some kind of healthy outlet to talk about their thoughts/feelings.

Firekeeper’s Daughter – A biracial unenrolled tribal member who witnesses a murder and reluctantly agrees to go undercover. I enjoyed learning more about Ojibwe customs/culture. The main character is kinda on the I’m  “Not Like Other Girls” spectrum, but if you are able to look past that, the read itself is enjoyable. It touches on a whole lot of different subjects for a YA-type novel. (As such, though, trigger warnings for SA/violence/suicide/drug use.)

The Vibrant Hong Kong Table – A “love letter to the city’s culinary heritage” + the recipes are all plant-based! There are many, many studies detailing health benefits from adopting a plant-based diet. Also helps that I don’t eat pork or seafood other than fish + could not eat a bunch of traditional Cantonese dishes/recipes growing up — now I can! (If I make these…)

The Girl From Provence – I’m adding this to my list of favorite books! 21 year old Lilou is a seamstress and beekeeper who takes care of her family’s sheep farm in the mountains of France. After her best friend + brother are taken away by the Germans, she aids in the French resistance. This is so beautifully written, you’ll feel like you’re right with the characters every step of the way. The characters are complex + well developed — it’s difficult not to fall in love/get attached to them (and the animals!), and the description of the village and the nature she spends her time in is captivating.

The Dollmaker – I don’t usually read horror, but this was historical fiction/romance/horror set in the 1920’s. The female main character is working on becoming a doctor, so I was intrigued! Dawn is determined to break through societal expectations + become a doctor. However, when her best friend is kidnapped by a serial killer, she is swept into the investigation. It doesn’t get super gory/graphic, but would recommend for the squeamish to avoid.

  1. Oh lots of people seem to be catching bugs these days. Hope you are feeling better and back at it. I am so not crafty at all but a Bob Ross painting day sounds fun

    1. Thank you! Definitely feeling better this week as compared to last week, but hopefully the last vestiges of it will resolve too…

  2. I love your bullet journal! I don’t keep a formal journal but I just have a notebook to jot down ideas. I have NO artistic talent at all so I would be terrible at painting, but I would enjoy a baking day! Your books sound good and I’m especially intrigued by the Hong Kong cookbook. It sounds like something I would love.
    I hope you’re feeling better!

    1. Thank you! Definitely feeling more alive this week than last, so I’ll take it, hehe.

I used to write almost every day in a journal but definitely dropped off of that in grad school + onward. Now it’s mainly sporadic blogging but I’d love to get back into journaling again — I feel like my head was in a better space then! :P

  3. I’ve never tried bullet journaling but it looks so cool. My planner has pages to bullet journaling so now I’m curious to check it out!

That sounds like a great time with your friend. It can be so hard to keep things going so it’s great that you have a plan in place!

Thanks for the book reviews – I added a couple of them to my Goodreads!

    1. I’m in awe of the bullet journal spreads/artistic abilities of others, but it’s a fun little outlet that also helps me get my life together in the process, so I really like it! :]

It isss; it definitely helps to make the plans in advance though (otherwise it generally never happens, hahaha ._.).

Yay! I hope you like em’!

  4. So I’ve been coughing like that since literally Thanksgiving. Just when I can make it a few days without cough drops, it comes back. I’ve been to the dt twice. The first time I was prescribed nasal spray which was no help at all, the second time it was diagnosed as viral pneumonia. At least the rattle in my lungs is gone now but I’m so sick of being sick. Hope you get better soon as well!
I’ve never tried bullet journaling but it looks cool!

    1. Oh mann, I’m so sorry! That really sucks. I hope your symptoms resolve completely soon (yay for the rattle being gone at least!)! I tried doing the nasal spray to help with the postnasal drip but alas (started getting nosebleeds, so I stopped :( ).

I find it a fun way to organize my life while also doing something kinda artsy/creative (but where I can do as little or as much as I want :] )!

  5. Oh, I love your tetris-style journaling! I’m bad at any kind of journaling.

That’s quite an eclectic book selection. I haven’t don’t NetGalley in years!

Sorry you’ve been sick. That type of illness is so frustrating.

    1. I’ve been bad about consistency but still working on it! I was so much more productive when I kept up with this! :P

NetGalley is a big reason to why it’s so eclectic, hehe. It’s been nice getting back into reading again though!

Thank you! It’s so nice to be able to talk without coughing again!

  6. Ugh on getting sick, that’s tough given your profession. I can’t remember the last time I was “really” sick (other than a runny nose or scratchy throat. I think I had a weird gunky nose thing going on for a couple weeks, but it disappeared (neg Covid test, so must have been a freak virus or something). I did have Covid twice, but the first time was asymptomatic and the second was very mild . I think all of my outdoor fitness stuff keeps me healthy ;-)

    1. That’s good! I’ve gotten sick a lot more over the past couple years, but I think it’s likely due to high stress/lack of sleep/lots of exposure, haha. :[ Hoping the eating healthy/staying active will keep me going though!

  7. I love your journal! I am not good at it. I have a notebook I use for school stuff in which I write down plans, information, etc. It’s helped me become more organized. I do try to make it look pretty though! Ugh, on being sick.

    1. Thank you! I’ve been bad about sticking to it but used to be so much better at being organized, haha. Hoping once it becomes more of a habit again, I’ll be able to get my life together! :P

  8. I hope you’re feeling better – there seem to be so many bugs going around right now. I can’t function without my planner – I’ve never tried bullet journaling. It looks like fun :)

    1. Thank you!!

I don’t know how I’ve managed to make it through the last few years without my planner/bullet journal anymore, haha. Time to get back to it!

  9. Being sick is the worst. I hope you are feeling better. I love being crafty. I do a monthly Crafternoon with friends and we make a new thing each month. It’s been fun. I am also trying to get back into journaling this year, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m behind already! LOL

I liked Firekeeper’s Daughter. I didn’t care for the romance as much, but the mystery was great.

    1. Thank you! I love that you have a monthly Crafternoon! I’d love to start something like that up with my friends. :] (And don’t worry, I’m super behind on my journal too, lol.)

Yeah, the romance felt kinda wrong, but it was a great read!
