Is it seriously already time for another one of these!? Sheesh, time! What’s going on!? :O We might as well roll with it though–come catch up on life with me at this month’s Ultimate Coffee Date!
Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2018
If we were having tea today, I’d…we finally managed to get our shiz together and have a PGY2 event! Last year, we tried to plan one every month but our schedules were too crazy so it became every couple months. This year, it’s been…well, more of the same. The last time we all hung out together was when we went apple picking, aka too long ago.
We decided to go ice skating!
Being from the west coast, ice rinks are not exactly the most common–we did have one for a short time that I remember going to maybe a handful of times in my life, but it eventually closed. I did, however, grow up rollerblading, and it’s roughly the same concept, so I managed to not fall or get my fingers sliced off by a rogue skater (don’t mind me–tis just an irrational fear I have, haha).
If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…I’d tell you that I’ve joined the Rutgers recreational rock climbing team and am getting belay-certified!
I’m pretty wimpy at it right now, but I’m also really excited about it–as my friend said, we have lots of challenges/goals to tackle!
If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…it’s getting to around that time in residency where I need to start thinking about my future and what I want to do with it.
It’s almost time to vote for next year’s chief residents–I’ve been in the camp of “abso-effing-lutely-not” for most of the past 1.5-ish years, but a bunch of other residents have been pressuring asking me if I plan to apply because they think I’d be awesome. I’m currently in the “thinking about it” camp.
I briefly discussed it with my program director and she said she thought I’d be a wonderful advocate for the residents + was super organized so she thought I’d do well. (I bet you it’s the bullet journal that makes it seem like I have my shiz together.)
My personal thoughts? I believe I could potentially do a lot of good if I got the position, but I also want to have time to focus on other things (namely, getting all the sports coverage ever, volunteering within the community, + learning all the things)–I know I have a tendency to do too many things at once and I’m trying to preemptively prevent that, but…past experience also shows that I’m really good with time management, and it could be a really good experience/opportunity!
I also talked with my former chief resident + called up one of my former senior residents who’s currently the sports med fellow at Penn (he’s been working with the Eagles + the Flyers this past year–what whatttt) and they gave me a ton of amazing and super helpful advice about applying for sports medicine! I’m super excited about it and really hope this works out! *-*

- Have you ever gone ice skating? How about rock climbing?
- Are you watching the Super Bowl? I’ll be working and usually wouldn’t care, but since a junior high/high school friend is an Eagles cheerleader and another friend takes care of their athletes, I am low-key rooting for the Eagles. Don’t hate me.
- Should I apply for the chief resident position? I’m still waffling, but have more of a lean…?

That’s one thing I have been curious about…what kind of responsibilities does a Chief Resident have? What are the pros and cons to being one?
VR recently posted…Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Long Distance Couples
I need to talk to the chiefs a little more, but it generally consists of putting together the call schedules, planning retreats, having meetings with faculty, and being the go-to person for all the residents in terms of questions/concerns/issues! Pros would be that you’d probably learn a lot, get paid a little more, and it looks good on your resume. Cons = it just takes up more time, haha.

That sounds great!! Seeing how you manage your time well between residency, extracurriculars and blogging you would make an awesome Chief resident :) good luck Farrah!
Aww, thanks so much! <3! I'll keep you posted on what happens!
After “getting to know you” through your blog the last couple of years, I think you’d be a fantastic chief resident! But I sure understand wanting to get started on your future. It would be good experience tho…and you’d be helping mold future doctors…
Eh….just get belay certified and maybe everything else will fall into place! pun not intended…

Aww, thanks, Wendy! <3 I think it'd be a good experience, but just really want to make sure that I'd be able to do a good job, haha.
I'm hoping to squeeze my last test in tonight or tomorrow evening! Hopefully no real falls! ;P

Apply missy! Go for it.
I have never been ice skating despite living on a lake? or rock climbing

hehe, I’m leaning towards probably applying for it! :D We’ll see how that goes!
It’s been ages since I’ve gone, but it was a lot of fun! If you get a chance to sometime before it all melts, it might be fun! :P

Ice skating lots. Rock climbing wall once. GO FOR IT! Having such a leadership position could give you more options later, plus I’m sure you would be great.

hehehe, that’s what everyone’s been telling me! I’m definitely leaning more towards applying now–we’ll see how it goes! (I’m sure you’ll all find out in another upcoming coffee date! :P )

I used to go ice skating a lot, but haven’t been in too many years to count! I’m with you in rooting for the Eagles.

Bullet journals are the best! I love how everyone’s is a little bit different and how customizable the system is. Yours is beautiful.
It sounds like you are doing a thorough review of the pros and cons of chief resident, especially the opportunity costs of the time it would take away from other things. Good for you for being open to the “thinking about it” phase. Whatever you decide will be the right decision for you.
Kim W recently posted…Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2018
Aww, thanks, Kim! There are definitely some spreads I’ve made that have been far from put-together-lookin’. :P
I’ll try my best to make the right decision! So many things to consider, haha. x_x

Well, I can’t imagine anyone NOT benefiting from your leadership, especially with your finesse at time management. Go for it!!! (easy for me to say as I sip my second post-run chai and contemplate the possibility of maybe hopping in the shower before nightfall…). I’m rooting for the Eagles, too…but because, as a kid, I always thought they had the prettiest uniforms (#artgeek #Colorfreak)

Aww, thank you so much! And haha, I like the picture you painted. :P Chai definitely sounds good right now!
haha, that’s totally understandable. :P I’m glad they won though! :D

Sounds to me like you should definitely apply! What’s the worst that can happen — you get it? ;)
I grew up ice skating, fell back in love with it in college, used to go once a week when I first moved here — until I started to run. And then there was simply no time for ice skating anymore!
I’m intrigued by rock climbing.I’m pretty sure i’d actually hate it, find it too scary, blah blah blah, but I have actually gone as far as looked for facilities that aren’t too far away. One looked good, but you had to sign up for a COURSE. I just want to try it!

Aww, sorry to hear! :[ I’m always trying to work out how to section out my time so I can try to do everything, with varying degrees of success.
Aww, darn! I hope you find a way to try it out somewhere! There’s gotta be somewhere that allows for just a trial class!!
Farrah recently posted…Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2018
I think I’ve been ice skating but I can’t really remember. I’ve definitely never been rock climbing but I have repelled off the side of a building a couple times. lol
I think you should apply. Seems like there’s quite a few people who really believe you could do it – including you – you just have to make the leap! :)

I’ve gone ice skating only a handful of times–my favorite is when you can actually go to an outdoor rink in the winter (being from Michigan, that’s entirely possible!). Rock climbing gyms are fun–some friends of ours recently opened a bouldering gym here and I’m planning to go in a couple of months. ;) I do get the impression that you’re tempted to be involved in a bit too many awesome things all at the same time…not that that’s entirely a bad thing, because an energetic personality like yours seems to handle it well, but also a preemptive decision to not over-schedule can be a good idea at times. I’m planning to take about a month off of all work and volunteering when baby comes and even though I have been cutting back from commitments on purpose…it’s still a challenge finding enough replacements, haha!

I’ve never gone skating at an outdoor rink, but that definitely sounds like it’d be fun! :D!
That’s really cool that your friends opened a bouldering gym! I hope you have fun when you do go!
Anddd yeah, haha. I definitely have that issue. :P I’ve definitely been trying to scale back over the past year to try to not go overboard, but ah, balance. Best of luck to the both of us! :P
Farrah recently posted…Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2018
I also have that fear of getting my fingers sliced off by a rogue skater. I think it counts as a rational fear – ice skates are sharp!

I think you should apply for the chief resident position. It should like it would be a great opportunity for you! I’m not watching the Superbowl. I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched it. I’m mildly more interested this year because it’s being held in MN. LOL

hahaha, I’m generally only interested in the food when it comes to the Super Bowl. :D…

Rock-climbing, so neat! I have done the indoor stuff once, and it’s not easy! Good for you in working on getting certified! Sounds awesome.
Sounds like you’ve got some great opps on the horizon! Good luck if you choose to apply to be a chief resident!
I want to go ice skating again, it’s been years for me. I also want to roller skate, been on my mind to do the latter lately for some reason.
Shannon @GirlsGotSole recently posted…Ultimate Coffee Date – February 2018
I think it’d be super cool to try it outdoors sometime (once I get good enough at indoors!)!
Thanks so much! I guess we’ll see what happens! :O I haven’t been roller skating in over 2 decades! (I grew up mostly with rollerblades. :O )
Farrah recently posted…Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2018
I say go for chief! I think you would be awesome and what an amazing experience it would be for you! I grew up (and still live) in icy Chicago, where we would make ice rinks in our own backyards! I haven’t ice skated in a long time, but I think I could at least still stay upright!

I hope you do apply for the chief residency position, it sounds like an awesome opportunity! Though I do also get in trouble with trying to do too many things at once, lol!
I’m in Philly so I’m DEFINITELY rooting for the Eagles tonight! I went ice skating in December with some friends and it was fun – I really wish I could go more often!

It sounds like you’d be a great chief resident, but I get wanting to have more time for other things, etc. Tough decision! My family is rooting for the Eagles – me too, but I’m not watching all that much as i’m trying to use this time to read/catch up on blog comments, etc. :) I’m enjoying some of the commercials so far though!!

haha, I feel like there’s 4 separate “teams” to root for in the Super Bowl–the two teams, the food, and the commercials! :P

YES, you should apply for the chief resident! You would be fabulous at it!
I really don’t like the Patriots so I am rooting for the Eagles. It also helps that Carson Wentz is from my home state and went to my alma mater so I guess that’s a good reason to want them to win.
Thanks, Missy!
hehe, that works! I’m glad they won! :P
