Sorry everyone! I hope everyone’s been doing well! I guess second year has been off to a super-busy start. I’m on my outpatient pediatrics rotation and they’ve upped my patient load at my office, so between all the notes, mini-travels, friend-reunions and food-touring through New Jersey, I haven’t had as much time to write lately. This may or may not improve soon, because I really do miss blogging! <3
The New American Heart Association Cookbook
This is the 9th edition of The New American Heart Association Cookbook and there are over 800(!) recipes in this book. If you’ve owned any of the previous copies, the difference between this and its predecessor = over 100 new recipes and 250 revamped ones. There’s also a focus on quick and easy recipes (my favorite way to cook), including slow cooker (yay!) and one-pan/pot meals! :]
The AHA focuses on the following:
- Healthy portions
- Limiting saturated fat
- Reducing sodium intake
- Incorporating…
- Whole grains
- Fruits/Veggies
- Low-fat dairy
- Healthy fats
- Nuts/seeds
- Lean proteins
I’ve talked before on my Medical Mondays series about hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes–making healthy dietary changes is one of the best things you can do for yourself in order to help prevent these conditions!
The The New American Heart Association Cookbook is divided into the following chapters:
Each recipe includes a short intro, the serving size, ingredient list + instructions, as well as nutrition facts–calories, total fat (broken down into saturated vs. trans vs. polyunsaturated vs. monounsaturated), cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates (fibger vs. sugars), protein, and dietary exchanges (e.g. 1/2 starch, 3 lean meat).
I did find a typo in the book, which made me somewhat sad, but I used to be a copy editor in high school/college, so go figure. :O For those who like pictures in cookbooks, this would not be the book for you. I adore food photos, so I was somewhat bummed to see that there weren’t any photos in this cookbook, but it does redeem itself with the tons and tons of recipes it includes! (That salmon photo on the front cover definitely helps too! :P )

I always wonder how you find the time to blog Farrah, I really hope you are enjoying your outpatient pediatric rotation. I can’t believe they upped your load, but you can handle it. What a great cook book I know many people that would benefit from it.

Thanks so much, Mary! :] It’s been a little cray, but thankfully still manageable for the time being! Hopefully I won’t be eating my words anytime soon! :P
We have a several-years-older version of this cookbook. It’s so practical, I don’t mind the lack of pictures.

Agreed! I definitely think its practicality makes up for the lack of photos! :]
I’ve read that the average number of typos/errors in published books is 1 or 2 per 100 pages. Even after going through several sets of eyes, there’s likely to be something wrong in the final copy. Which of course is horrifying, since it means I’ve definitely left errors in things I’ve edited throughout my life :P
