Hello and welcome to Medical Mondays! You mighttt already know that I’m all about good skin care + love trying out different skin care products. But here’s the thing–your skin = your largest organ system, and skin care products can only go so far. You have to take care of yourself too (we’re going back to the “food as medicine” theme with a book review on The 8-Week Healthy Skin Diet!)!
The 8-Week Healthy Skin Diet
By Karen Fischer
Genre: Health, Skin Care
Pages: 480
There are several questionnaires in this book that go through different symptoms you might experience if you’re suffering from different conditions/deficiencies (e.g. parasites, Candida, omega-6, chromium, zinc, protein, etc.). This book goes through a LOT of super helpful information, not just for skin health but for overall health. I’m not going to belabor em’ all here because that’s what the book is for, but here are her 8 guidelines for healthy skin:
- Think Green and Friendly: Restoring Your pH Balance
- Moisturize your Skin From Inside Out: Eating Great Fats
- Eat Less: Controlling Your Carbs and Protein
- Be a Sleeping Beauty: Practicing Good Sleep Habits
- Sweat for 15 Minutes a Day: Exercising for Healthier Skin
- Be a Hat Person: Avoiding UV Light Exposure
- Relax:Making Peace with Your Body
- Follow a Good Skin-Care Routine: Selecting Safe and Effective Beauty Aids
It also includes a section on specialized programs for specific skin concerns (e.g. acne, cellulite, cradle cap, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, children’s clear skin program).
The recipes are divided into the following chapters:
- Beverages (Green Water, ACV Drink, Papaya Beauty Smoothie, Spot-Free Skin Juice, Apple Omega Drink, Strawberry Rehydration Water, Pear Flaxseed Drink for Sensitive Skin…)
- Breakfasts (Berry Beauty Porridge, Smoked Salmon and Avocado on Toast, Vitamin E Muesli, Mango and Buckwheat Crepes, Smoked Salmon and Eggs…)
- Sauces, Dips and Salad Dressings (Tartar Sauce, Tuna Dip, Sweet Chile Sauce, Sweet Chutney, Omega Salad Dressing…)
- Snacks (Vegetable Hand Rolls, Avocado Salsa, Avocado Beauty Snack, Anti-Aging Broth…)
- Chicken Lunches and Dinners (Therapeutic Chicken Soup, Sweet Chicken Stir-Fry, Herb and Garlic Chicken Casserole…)
- Fish and Seafood (Salmon and Salad Sandwich, Thai Fish with Corn, Seafood Hotpot…)
- Beef and Lamb (Beef Barley Soup, Slow-Cooked Lamb Casserole, Healthy Hamburger…)
- Vegetable Main Courses and Side Dishes (Chickpea Beauty Salad, Roasted Sweet Potato Salad, Rich Mineral Salad with Papaya, Dill and Baby Spinach…)
- Desserts and Sweet Treats (Stewed Pears with Vanilla Soy Custard, Mango Ice, Carrot Cake, Poached Apple Surprise…)
Each recipe contains a short intro, serving size, the ingredient list and instructions, as well as the nutrients provided per serving (calories, total fat (saturated vs omega-3), carbohydrates, fiber, protein, biotin, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and zinc)! This is another photo-less book (sigh!), but it includes a ton of really helpful information, and I’m kinda overjoyed to finally have some recipe inspiration for all my flax seed oil/ground flax seed! :P

Taking care of your skin while you age is so important. Wish I had done a better job in my 20’s and 30’s trying to catch up now.Looks like an interesting book
I like to think that it’s better late than never! :O!
My skin regiment is pretty simple. I have very sensitive skin so I wash and moisturize with cetaphil only. I would definitely check out this cookbook!

Cetaphil is awesome! Simple is great when it works well for you! :]!
I have to admit, I mostly coast along on good genes when it comes to skin. I almost never even used lotion/moisturizer before I moved to the desert!
haha, having good genes is awesome!! :D
Sounds like a very informative read! I probably should do more for my skin, but I definitely try and clean it every night – and CERTAINLY if I wear makeup (I don’t everyday).

That’s definitely important! I’m trying to be better about wearing sunscreen daily! :P
I have noticed a lot of imporvement in my skin from eating less dairy and cutting back on sugar. It is easier said than done but I do believe that diet makes a difference. I also have a lot of success with a face wash routine and using Rodan and Fields has helped a lot.
Sounds like a great book! I have horrible acne so I try and take good care of my skin with a good diet and regimen
