Sullivan Bay Trail

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! We’re still in Minnesota this week, and I’m taking you on one more hike in Voyageurs National Park–the Sullivan Bay Trail!

As with the Kabetogama Lake + Beaver Pond Overlook hikes, this hike is also located close to the Ash River Visitor Center.

Sullivan Bay Trail

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 1.5 miles out and back
Elevation: 91 feet
Admission/Parking: Free
Trailhead Address: Voyageurs National Park, Orr, MN 55771

This is an easy, mostly flat trail with one pretty small hill near the end of the trail. When you get to the end, you’ll have a really great view of Sullivan Bay.

However, when we went in July, they’d just had a pretty big storm that caused a good amount of destruction on the trail. That storm was actually the reason why we didn’t go on the hike I’d hoped to go on originally–Blind Ash Bay Trail. The park rangers told us it’d probably take an extra 2-3 hours due to all the rubble, so we went for the shorter trails instead.

It doesn’t take too long to get there and back, buttttt beware the mosquitoes. They do not care if you have copious amounts of bug spray/DEET and clothes on–they’ll just bite their way through. I ended up with something like 30 mosquito bikes just on this hike alone (yes, I counted).

It was definitely a gorgeous view and very peaceful there, but were the mosquito bites worth the view? Now that all the itching is over, I think I can say it was worth it. But they did itch for a good 1.5 weeks. I’d recommend maybe encasing yourself in a bug net next time if you don’t want to deal with all the bites. (That being said, I didn’t try this so maybe they have a way to get around that too. :'( )

We stopped at the Rocky Ledge Resort for dinner and I got the Fry Bread Fish Tacos!

That looks like a lovely hike. Mosquitoes don’t like me, so I would come back with no bites :oP

    1. I’m so jealous! My legs were eaten alive, hahaha.

  2. Noooo for the mosquitoes! They really can ruin the day in the summer can’t they! You know, I bet this hike would be amazing at this time of year. It’d still be beautiful, but more bug-free! I wonder if the lake freezes in winter?

    1. Forreals–I thought the bug spray would do the trick, but my goodness, they were persistent/vicious. I’d love to check it out this time of year! It’s pretty far up north, so that’s definitely possible!

  3. This looks like such a beautiful hike, but wow, I can’t believe how many bug bites you got. That’s intense! Maybe the storm brought more out? That sounds so crazy. I hope you had some good remedies for that.😬
