Welcome to another Travel Tuesday! I’ve been to a bunch of museums in the past, but for some reason, this is the first time I’ve ever written about one–better late than never, right? And what better museum to start with than the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History?
Smithsonian Museum of Natural History
Address: 10th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, DC
Admissions: Free
Hours: 10 am – 5:30 pm daily (closed on December 25)
The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is home to the largest natural history collection in the world! The fact that admission is free is pretty amazing too (although donations would be a good idea!).
It’s probably easiest/best to get here by walking/public transportation, as there are no public parking facilities available for the Smithsonian museums located in the National Mall. (There are limited metered parking + commercial lots available though!)
There are a lotttt of different exhibits here, including:
- David H. Koch Hall of Fossils
- Butterfly Pavilion
- O. Orkin Insect Zoo
- David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins
- Eternal Life in Ancient Egypt
- Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals
- Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals
There are also a number of temporary exhibits! (We came here at the end of June, so I’m not entirely sure how long these exhibits are there to stay for!)
- Objects of Wonder
- Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend (unicorns of the sea! :] )
- Nature’s Best Photography: Windland Smith Rice International Awards (this was one of my favorites!)
- Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World
- Sea Monsters Unearthed: Life in Angola’s Ancient Seas
- The Last American Dinosaurs: Discovering a Lost World

I agree; this place is magical.
Definitely one of my favorite (if not my absolute favorite) museums! :]
I enjoyed reading your post, was left wanting more! My son and I would love to visit the Smithsonian oneday. We’re in the UK so hopefully we’ll get there :)
Aww, thank you! I hope you and your son get to go sometime! :]!
I love checking out museums. I haven’t been to this one yet, but I also haven’t been to US, so… :) It looks really interesting.
I hope you get to go sometime! Museums are so much fun to explore! :]
I can’t wait to get to Washington and visit some of these museums one day. The Natural History Museums (all over the world) are my JAM. I’m all about the dinosaurs! But we found a trip to Cuba which was way cheaper when we were going to go LOL. Hopefully one day soon!
Ooo, haha, that’s definitely understandable! I’m all about finding great deals/budget travel too. :P I hope you get to go to Washington sometime too though! :]
I didn’t have time to pop into the Museum of Natural History when I was in Washington DC but it looks amazing! I’ll add it to my list when I’m next there. Thanks for the great guide!
Aww, I hope you get a chance to visit it next time! There’s so much to do in DC–it’s hard to fit everything in!
This place looks awesome! I hope I get to visit one day. Dinosaurs, elephants and narwhals… what’s not to like? :)
