Ricketts Glen State Park

This weekend was full of all sorts of adventures, so I’m linking up with Erin over at Her Heartland Soul for Weekend Snapshots! I’ll be sharing a super pretty hike (Falls Trail Loop in Ricketts Glen State Park) today too!

I hung out in 4 states over the past two days, so today’s post is actually just going to cover…my meal from Friday evening to the first half of my Saturday.

My friend and I decided to take a break from hospital food (though lovely and free) to check out the downtown area! It happened to be First Friday, so there were lots of shops and stands open later than usual, as well as a whole lot of people. :O We decided to go for barbecue!

I got the pulled turkey. :]

I got the pulled turkey. :]

It was our first weekend out from our current rotation, so we decided to go explore the area! The hospital has tons of absolutely gorgeous pictures on the walls, and several of them feature waterfalls that look pretty magical. After finding out that they were from Ricketts Glen (~45 minutes from where we are at the moment), we decided we had to take a trip there.

We packed up sandwiches from Subway, loading em’ up with the driest greens they had so that the bread wouldn’t get soggy, and I brought along a container of guacamole so we could use that to spice em’ up when we stopped for lunch. :]

This is your advance warning that I’m going to be assailing you with 30+ pictures of pretty waterfalls, scenery + outdoor shots! <3

Falls Trail Loop in Ricketts Glen State Park

rickettsglen

We took the Falls Trail because it’d send us along pretty much all the waterfalls. It isn’t technically recommended for beginners, which I guess we aren’t, except that it’d been such a long time since either of us had been regularly active that we might as well have been born-again beginners. :o (What matters is that we made it!)rickettsglen1Distance: 8 miles (loop)
Elevation:  1102 ft
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: ~3-4 hours
Trailhead Address: 41.30039, -76.27212
Parking: Lot available
Fee: None (free!!!)

We decided to tackle the harder end of the loop first (the one with more elevation) so we wouldn’t feel like dying later on.

I actually did legs day on Wednesday and was sore through Saturday (…). Twas a good thing I hadn’t gone with my original plan to work out legs on Friday though!?

Most of the hike was shaded by all the trees, so although it did get hot, it wasn’t unbearable in the least, and it wasn’t even all that humid! :]

rickettsglen11 rickettsglen12 rickettsglen14 rickettsglen15 rickettsglen16 rickettsglen17

There were plenty of other people on the trail (it’s easy to see why this place is such a popular one to visit!), but there were only 1-2 times where it got slightly congested with large groups of people. It definitely could’ve been worse!

I got a kick outta this one! :P

Normally, I cut out all signs of human life in my pictures, but I left her in for scale!

rickettsglen29 rickettsglen30 rickettsglen31 rickettsglen32 rickettsglen33

The entire hike took us a little under 3 hours, with plenty of stops for photo opportunities laced in between (as you can probably tell…). I definitely wouldn’t mind going back here again! :] It’s gorgeous, and it’d be really cool to capture pictures of this place with every season! I might send someone to go in my place for winter though. :P

We also came across a random cowboy(?).

Before we left, we went to check out what the “beach” area was…

There was sand and everything! :O

Whilst eating our lunch, Liz spotted someone off in the distance with treats! So we tracked it down and got ice cream. :]

Stay tuned tomorrow for the rest of my weekend adventures! :]

  1. Wow! I’m pretty partial to waterfalls, that looks like an awesome hike! But it does sound and look a little ‘non-beginner-ish’–the last few months I’ve been slacking in the outdoorsy working out stuff, hopefully as the schedule calms down a little we’ll start sneaking it in more!

    1. I love em’ too! I’ve definitely been slacking in the outdoorsy + working out stuff as well, but I’ve been climbing back on the wagon as of last week, so hopefully, that’ll continue! :] Best of luck to you in sneaking it back in too! :]!

  2. So so gorgeous!! Very jealous! Looks like you had a great time, can’t wait to hear about the rest of your adventures!

glad you enjoyed it. It really is a great hike! Was it a bit slippery when you went? That was my only fear! Gah!!

    1. That’s awesome! :D I really loved the hike too! It was pretty slippery, so I was definitely a little concerned that I would slip and fall/die or twist something and render myself useless, but thankfully, that did not happen! :]!

  5. Those pics are beautiful!! What a cool place to visit! We just got back from Williamsburg this weekend. :) My last week of summer break is this week then it’s back to teaching!

  12. I walked this once. I found it very challenging, especially the elevation! I wasn’t really prepared. I would love to go back and do it again now that I’m in better shape!

  15. I loooooove Ricketts Glen! I grew up camping in Worlds End State Park (which is near Ricketts Glen) and we used to hike there all the time. It’s one of the few places in PA that I really miss! It looks like you had a fabulous time!

  18. PULL ME OFF SOME OF THAT TURKEY and I will be GOOD TO GO to hike with you through the park!! These pictures remind me of Wyoming (where I am from)… I haven’t visited in SO LONG, it’s crazy to think about!

I’ve never been to Wyoming, but I hear it’s absolutely gorgeous! :D I gotta add that to my travel list! <3

  19. Hiking is one of my most favorite things to do! I’m so glad that my kids inherited my endurance. My 7-year old can hike for hours without showing a sign of tiredness. He is also my running buddy :) Ricketts Glen looks like a gorgeous find! I hope to visit it one day. And I know from experience that good guacamole enriches any hiking adventure :)

  20. I was scrolling through the photos and totally stopped at the ice cream (dang, that looked good). I love state parks, even more so than national. This looks like one worth visiting.

    1. hehe, it was hard to resist that ice cream! :P

I feel like they’re definitely more underrated! I’m hoping to check out all the ones in my state and then branch out to the others!

  21. Gorgeous destination, thanks for introducing it! Good thing to leave (unrecognizable) people in the photos to showcase the real scale. Stunning. Sometimes, especially on crowded trails, it’s also useful information to see how busy the trails actually are.

    1. This one’s definitely one of my favorites — it’s definitely a popular one but thankfully didn’t feel very crowded (and the further we went, the less people we saw)!

  23. What a beautiful trail! The falls look really enchanting! Waterfall hikes are my favourite hikes! Thanks for sharing this great guide!

    1. Waterfalls are one of my favorite things to find on hikes! :] Thanks for stopping by!

  24. Firstly, nothing to do with the trail, but you are genius for getting subway with the driest greens! I made the mistake of getting subway for a hike once and it was soooo soggy and gross by lunchtime! (The pulled turkey looks amazing too…)

The falls trail is stunning! I LOVE it when you get to see multiple waterfalls in the same day. :)

    1. Oh noooo! I will have to confess that I learned to do this due to trial and error, haha. (The tomato did me in previously! :'( )

Agreed! I wanna find more hikes like this! *-*
