I’m back with another cookbook!
My brother’s first reaction to the cover: “She looks hella happy!”
Well, he’s not wrong. :O I’d be that happy too if I could make all the food in this cookbook.
I’ve been working with a lotttt of patients with diabetes lately, so I thought this book would be pretty awesome for potential recipe inspiration for them!
The I Quit Sugar Cookbook
By Sarah Wilson
Genre: Cookbook
Pages: 376
The I Quit Sugar Cookbook is action-packed with recipes! (306 recipes in those 376 pages! ;P ) There are many, many sections in this book so I’m not going to go into as much detail with each! I also would’ve loved to include more photos, but the waning sunlight and my one-handed photography (since the other one is still broken) make for a pretty difficult task!
Sarah seems like such a fun and awesome person to be around, and that’s something that’s definitely reflected in every page of this book. I love that she advocates for no waste and sustainable living, which concurrently helps with saving money! She even includes a section on alternative uses for sugar (face scrubs, removing stains, keeping flowers alive…) so that it doesn’t get wasted!
One of her kitchen philosophies is to start where you are! (Tis something I like to tell my patients as well!)
The Basics: Learn to make your own homemade stocks, spice mixes, sauces, dressings, pestos, jams…
Against-the-Grain Breakfasts: breakfast puddings, savory oatmeals and yogurts, coffee, breakfast hashes, winter spice recipes, green smoothies…
Snackalicious: rainbow chips, cheeseburger wontons, savory granola, dosas, allergy-free bread, two-minute desk lunch noodles(!!), a page of 3-ingredient snacks…
Abundance Bowls: Nutrient-dense meals (and oh em eff gee they look amazing–I need to make them all! *-*)
Ground Meat: Most of the recipes in this section let you use different ground meats interexchangeably!
Sustainable Fish in a Dish: So many tasty fish dishes in this section! I think the Sustainable Sweet Fish Curry catches my eye most
So I Have This Stack of Vegetables: Hooray for veggies! Lots of salad, drinks, bakes and sauces in here, including a breakdown of suggestions for uses + a discussion of nutrients in many well- or lesser-known veggies!
Just Like Grandma Used To Make: If you’ve ever wanted to learn to make Coq Au Vin Pate, Lamb’s Fry and Pear Meatloaf, jerky, etc., this is your section!
A Bunch of Sunday Cook-Ups: Yay for a whole bulk-cooking (often with a slow cooker) section! I need to try the Cheat Roast Dinners and the”Cheapest Stew Ever.”
Midweek One-Pan Wonders: Starting to think that this book was made for my (or really, any perpetually busy person’s) life. <3 These are all recipes made in one pot/skillet/baking sheet!
My Leftover Mishmashes: Recipes to use up all your scraps and minimize food waste as much as possible! :]
Show-Stopping Treats: Truffles? Ice cream? Cheesecake-stuffed peaches!?! If you have any kind of a sweet tooth, I think you’ll really love this section.
A Celebration Menu: Lots of fun and festive recipes in this section to impress party guests!
Ferments and other Gut-Healing Functional Foods: Learn how to make fermented veggies, kimchi, tonics, gummies, sprouts, etc.!
The back of the book includes a neat little shopping list of the things she keeps on hand, as well as recipe substitutes/fixes, a guide to sugar and safe sweeteners, a 10-day dinner plan requiring only 3 cook-ups, a “leftovers index” for if you have certain ingredients you want to use up, as well as an actual index!
I love the photography and the whimsical nature of this cookbook–it kinda reminded me of my Portlandia cookbook (aka my very first cookbook review from back in the day!). Each recipe includes a short intro, the serving size, ingredient list, instructions, and if applicable/pertinent, little tips/tricks, as well as what you can use the leftover ingredients for!
- Have I sold you on The I Quit Sugar Cookbook yet? I don’t think I ever actively throw sugar into anything, but this book gives me so many other amazing food ideas! *-*

I rarely add sugar when I’m cooking, but when I go out to eat, it tends to be a whole ‘nother story!! :O I can’t wait to try out these recipes! *-*
I probably really need this cookbook in my life. It’s so hard to quit sugar because it seems to be hiding in everything!

For serious! It’s crazy how many things it’s in! :[
I love that parts of the cookbook look hand-written :) makes it more personal!! Ohh props to anyone who can quit sugar. I’m in too deep and I don’t even care. Oops.

Agreed! <3 I really like reading all the little snippets, hehe.
I don't think I'm going to be completely quitting sugar anytime soon either, but...everything in moderation?! :P
This sounds like a great book. Those one tray sweet potato nachos alone look worth the buy!

Agreeeeed! It looks so effing good!!
I quit sugar 15 years ago, which is nuts to think about and makes me feel kind of old. LOL – but I would NEVER EVER go back to including sugar… Cause um, I would live in the hospital if I did that… It’s so weird but I have a really horrible intolerance to it! :(

My 10 year high school reunion is coming up this year so I’m also feeling kinda old, hahaha.
That’s definitely a good thing that you’ve quit it, given the consequenxes–it looks like you’ve found/made all kinds of amazing foods anyway though! <3
These foods do look yummy! I have been tracking my calorie intake because of my health and I am horrified to see how much sugar and sodium some processed foods sneak in there. It was an eye opening experience. I think I will look for this cookbook to help me in my process.

For serious! It’s crazy how much stuff is hiding in our foods (even the things that we think are “healthy” :[!). I hope you like this cookbook! :D I love her philosophy in life!
ooo this sounds awesome, even though I do like my candy :D

Haha, me too! Snickers and Twix! :P
I tend to think of everything in moderation. I try to limit added sugars, but I love my ice cream and dark chocolate!

I like that everything in moderation philosophy as well! I don’t really add sugar to anything I cook, but I am also a definite fan of ice cream!
I try to avoid added sugar in food (unless it’s dessert which I try to make myself with honey or something) because it’s so prevalent in everything it’s insane. I actually already own this book, but do you have a different edition? Mine looks different than yours! lol. great post as always Farrah ♥

It’s insanely prevalent!! X_x but yeah, my favorite sweetener is also honey! I think I may possibly have a different edition? I hadn’t seen any of her previous books before, so maybe this one is a re-release?
I need this! Wow – most of these dishes… and desserts even… look delicious! I have way tooooooo much sugar in my life…..

I definitely can’t blame you! It’s in everything! Super looking forward to trying out the recipes in this book though!
What a great cookbook, I HAVE TO GET IT! I actually cut out sugar a few months ago except for a few times a month and WOW did my skin clear up, the bit of fat I had around my stomach cleared away and I just have SO much more energy! I even took out fruit just sometimes berries and that was HARD but it made such a difference! Thanks for sharing xo C
Author
Oh goodness, I wonder if maybe I should cut it out as well… I could definitely afford to cut back some though! More energy would be wonderful!
This cookbook looks SO good! I generally don’t tend to eat too much sugar – and when I’m baking I like to use less processed/more natural alternatives simply because it’s what I prefer, however, I know how easy it is to overload on sugar when you’re not careful!

Definitely! I usually don’t use any sugar when I’m cooking, but honey is definitely my favorite sweet!
Most of us are sweet enough ;) We don’t need extras!

I would never take the time to make my own jams, sauces, etc when I I can easily buy them but I certainly could get on board with the one pan wonder and the Mish mash!
Glad you enjoyed the book. She does look happy!
Author
I keep wanting to make my own jam, but like you, I have not made it either because it is really just that much easier to buy it. Maybe one day! I’m definitely on board with the one pan recipes and the mish mash too!
Wow, this cookbook looks amazing! I love the photography and the dishes look great, even the desserts! I also like the idea of the one-pan wonders- perfect for busy weeknights.

HAHA! Your brother’s comment about how she looks “hella happy”. I bet you I wouldn’t be that “hella happy” if I quit sugar today. I know I need to cut back though. Sugar is my weakness. Not alcohol, not any other drug, not cheese, not comfort foods…sugar.

Sugar is in so many things though, I totally feel ya! It’s in many of the things that I love too, so I’m not sure I could completely cut it out, but I could probably afford to scale back as well!
I might need to get this! I gave up sugar for a few months last fall and I felt awesome, but it’s hard to find sugar free recipes. I think I might need to check this out!

I think you would definitely love this book then! Props to you for being able to give it up for a few months! That’s way better than me!
This sounds like the kind of cookbook I would enjoy using! Abundance bowls sound intriguing! I’m all in favor of eliminating waste, sustainable living and no sugar. We don’t eat much sugar, but sometimes we do have dessert with honey or maple syrup (which is sugar too).
Author
Agreed! I want to make all the abundance both! They all look so good! Honey is definitely my preferred sweetener!!
I probably ought to check out this cookbook. Minimizing my sugar that I eat is on my to do list. It’s been totally derailed by birthday cake and Halloween candy but it’s on the list.
