It was a couple nights before the final, and I was headed home for the evening/night (I wanted to take a shower, and I wanted my hair to dry before I went to sleep at a hopefully-somewhat-decent hour). I stopped by at the rooms next door where a couple of my friends were studying to say goodbye.
F: (waves through the window)
M: Hey!
I: Come in!
F: (opens the door) Whoa. It smells like dudes in here.
I: Are you saying we smell bad?
F: No. It just smells like dudes.
M: Are you saying it smells like feet in here?
F: Ew! No. Just…whatever soap or body wash you use, I guess.
M: Because I just took a shower and I think I smell good. Wait, come here and smell me.
F: It’s really okay.
M: (runs over to me) C’mon! Smell me! I just took a shower! A couple hours ago.
F: :/…
M: (lifts arm and sniffs self) I smell good! Smell me, Farrah!
F: …You want me to smell your armpit?
I: Farrah, you don’t understand! He’s trying to attract you with his pheromones.
M: Yeah! C’mon, get in there! (pulls me in closer so I’ll sniff his armpit)
F: …I cannot believe this is happening.
This spurred a conversation about how people tend to be more attracted to people who are genetically extremely different from them (it has to do with the significant differences in your immune systems, so the potential offspring would essentially get “the best of both worlds”). I think Isaac and I learned this in PSC 1, aka general psychology.
We also got into a debate about gender/sports. Isaac and I are in the Dr. Shaffrath camp (females tend to be better at distance swimming + climbing than males) and I’ve temporarily blacklisted Mike because he insulted the person I probably most look up to in the world of science and medicine. (All he really did was completely disregard something Dr. Shaffrath told us, but it was enough! >:O )
F: >:[!
M: Great, now Farrah hates me forever. What did I do?
I: She doesn’t hate you. But it’s because of what you said earlier.
M: That wasn’t meant to be insulting though!
F: You insulted the person I most look up to! I’d adopt this guy as my other dad if things worked that way!! :[!
M: What?
I: It wasn’t the not-meant-to-be-but-could-be-misconstrued-as-chauvinistic comment. It’s what you said after that–when you completely disregarded Shaffrath’s wisdom.
This is probably how arguments/fights/misunderstandings are born. Good thing we’re a laidback bunch.
