Muir Woods Dipsea Trail

My parents tell me that they’ve taken me to Muir Woods before, but I have zero recollection of it, so I can only assume that I was but a wee behbeh at the time. Clearly, this needed to change. Here’s my recap of our hike through Muir Woods Dipsea Trail (kindasorta)!

I spent the first 18 years of my life in the SF bay area, but isn’t it funny/strange how you can live near a place for so long and never actually visit the “tourist attractions” much? (Twas probably because I had no license and had my life swallowed by the over-achieving nature of my high school, but still!)

Well, clearly, this needed to change!

I got swallowed by a tree.

Aka how I got swallowed by a tree.

During my trolling of OKC, I made friends with Ricardo (he’s the one who sent me this super awesome bike trainer that is currently chillin’ at Please Save A Cat!). We’ve been trading hilarious imgur photos and the like via text for a million moons and he mentioned wanting to go hiking there, so I figured I’d tag along as well!

Distance: ~6 miles(?)
Elevation: ~59 floors (according to my phone!)
Trailhead Address: 1 Muir Woods Rd, Mill Valley, CA 94941
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult(?)–depends on your fitness level; it got pretty darn steep, but was definitely doable!
Parking: Park in the overflow lot if you want a slightly easier time getting out of there! There’s a bathroom there too, in case you need to take care of business before (or after) your hike! Try to get there before 9 a.m. unless you like vulturing for parking spots!

We used the Hillside Trail as a warmup of sorts, and continued with the Ben Johnson Trail to the Dipsea Trail, and then a detour through the Deer Park Fire Road!

hillsidetrail

The Main Trail is a nice little paved 1.5-2 mile stretch, and I suspect it’s probably what my parents meant when they said I’d been here before, since they’re not really the super-hiking-adventures type! The Hillside Trail was somewhat similar!

This tree in the middle of the trail just wanted to live life the way it wanted to. You do you, tree!

To preface, I was already somewhat sore because I’d spent the day before training BJJ with Rhalan Gracie. I’m very-very accustomed to rolling with dudes who are at least 50 pounds heavier than me, but that day’s class actually had girls who were my size! (Oh em gee wut.) At the end of class, Rhalan had us do some live drills on passing guard while everyone else watched, and not gonna lie, my first thought? “Noooooo, he’s gonna wonder why the hecks he ever told me about his classes here.”

(In case you can’t tell, I don’t have too much confidence in my BJJ skills, mostly because I never have a chance to practice, and practice is kinda essential to getting to be good at anything.)

My best skill is hanging on like a barnacle and/or surviving, but I can’t ever remember any offensive tactics. I was in for a pleasant surprise though–not only did I not die or get submitted, I managed to get a rear naked on one and lasted until he called a tie on the other! :D! I consider this progress.

I’m writing about this mainly to explain why the steepness was extra-hard, but goodness, it was worth it!

muirredwoods2

I felt really short.

The elevation for this one was about 10 floors more than the Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona, but with no random rock climbing–just rather steep stair-roots.

muirredwoods3

If I were asked what type of tree I’d be at an interview, I’d be a redwood. (I like to think that I’m durable/persistent.)

Did you know that they’re kinda fireproof? They don’t have pitch (super flammable substance) inside their trunks and don’t make resins–their sap is mostly made of water! The tannins in their bark also act as a defense against both wildfire, decomposition, and insect infestation!

(Can you tell that I was once a science camp counselor? :P )

It was reallyyy muddy on the loop back, so we definitely stepped into many a deceiving mud puddle. (Wet shoes/socks are definitely not the greatest feeling in the world.) California desperately needs the rain though, so it’s a-okay! Having to leap from bank to bank across mini-streams added to the adventure aspect!

muirredwoods6

The Dipsea Trail is also home to the Dipsea Race, which is a 7.4 mile course from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. There’s a crap ton of stairs/steepness involved, but it’s a really popular race since it’s such a gorgeous course, so people all over the world apply to be able to race there, but they only take 1,500 runners a year! panoramicmuirwoodshike

…And of course, what would my hikes be without the classic post-hike victory meal? This time, it was a jumbo burrito! This sucker likely weighed well over a pound.

posthikevictorymeal

I probably shouldn’t have eaten the whole thing right before another workout…

The Dipsea Trail technically stretches all the way to Stinson Beach, and although I’d normally never say no to a beach, we were a little time-crunched because I needed to get my butt back to Twirly Girls by 1 p.m. for open pole since the AIDS LifeCycle fundraiser is this coming weekend, but I’d love to come back to explore more of the trails here someday!

  • Have you ever been to Muir Woods? Which trail did you take?
  • Do you ever visit the “touristy” areas near where you live? I barely count this as touristy, but I guess it technically is!

  1. Beautiful hike! I love how you document the different hikes you do. I love hiking, but most of the time I guess wherever we go hiking over here is too obscure no one who reads my blog is ever likely to go to the same place…
I’ve never seen redwoods, but it would be awesome to see them one day!

    1. Thanks! I wish I started really documenting them sooner–some of the places I’ve gone are a little more obscure too, but they’re a lot of fun to look back on! I’ll have to get a couple hikes in when I’m back in West Virginia!

I hope you get to see em’ someday! :D

  2. Looks like a hike I would love! I can’t wait to go again in a few months when the snow has melted!

    1. Yay! I hope you get to go again soon! Stay warm! :]

  3. I am so kicking myself for not going to Muir Woods when I visited my friend in SF a few years ago! Next time for sure. Wow. your photos are stunning!

PS- love the standing burrito! LOL My friend used to do that with his. It reminded me of a “baby” sitting pretty :)

    1. Aww, darn! I hope you get to go again sometime! <3

      haha, it was ginormous!

  4. You grew up in San Francisco?!?!?! OMG, that would’ve be my dream place to grow up in! Mostly, because of full house, lol. Muir Woods seems like it would be really fun to hike through! Maybe one of these days I’ll get the chance to actually o and visit!

    1. Not quite in SF–I’m about an hour out from there! I was banned from TV at a young age, so I’ve actually never seen Full House! (I know, I know…)

I hope you’ll get to visit sometime! <3

  5. Gahl, this makes me regret the lack of hiking I did while living in Cali. We really only ventured to Yosemite and Knights Ferry for hiking. But Yosemite could be a lifelong trail hike with how much there is to see and do there!

    1. I sadly haven’t done that much while here either. There’s one place I go back to semi-regularly, but I’ve been trying to branch out!

I agree with you on Yosemite! I’m super hoping I can go hiking there later on this year!

  6. Gorgeous!! Adding this to my must-do list of things! I’ve been to that forest, but not done the hike. I feel like I missed out.

Dang, forgot to get a picture of that super sweet home you could have made.

    1. Darn! Oh well, I like the one where the tree’s partially swallowed me, hehehe.

Oh, and you should have mentioned that you want to get there before 9am, otherwise good luck parking on the side of the road.

    1. Thankfully, it’s never too late to add it in!

  8. how cool! this is such a stunning place to explore, Farrah! Love the pic of you inside the tree haha :) I need to visit SF area someday. ♥

  9. Beautiful- so many gorgeous photos Farrah! Even though it’s totally wrapped in foil- three’s something so enticing about that burrito ;)

    1. Thanks so much, Sonali! That burrito was amazing, haha. I can’t ever seem to take pretty pictures of it once I’ve already started on em’, so I figured I’d just share it before I started. :]

  10. What a fun hike! I’ll need to check it out someday!

  12. I LOVE MUIR WOODS!!!! I have only been to San Fran once, and we spent one afternoon hiking around there. Seriously if I lived there I’d take my laptop into the woods a few days a week plop myself up against some massive larger and taller than life tree, and write until dark.
Love the photo’s! I need to go back there, I am not sure if this is one of the hikes I went on or not. I don’t remember that tree that you are standing in. So possibly I didn’t take that route, need to now!!!

    1. It’s a gorgeous place! If my laptop battery didn’t such so much, I would totally be with you on that, haha. <3 I'd probably bring a good book though! :]

There are a whole bunch of different trails--I definitely need to go back! :]

  13. Wow, beautiful! I love going on hikes through such lovely nature! (During the summer that is!)

    1. haha, winters definitely aren’t my favorite time, but if I had the right gear (lots of cold weather clothes and shoes I wouldn’t slip/fall/die in…), I’d be up for winter hikes!

  14. What a beautiful place to hike and your right, you should have checked it out earlier then later. Coming from Florida, where all tourists end up, I did do a few of the touristy things, but not all, I had my limits. I went to Disney like 300 times but never went to Mid Evil Times, lol. There is a tourist spot here in NC, that is near by, but we love it for its history and beautiful buildings, but have never done a tour. Old Salem also has one of our favorite restaurants, so we visit often, even though it is a tourist place with people dressed up and stuff. Thanks for sharing this post, I LOVE all the images you took, it makes me want to visit.

    1. Ah, Disney! I wouldn’t mind going to Disney World again someday! (I went once when I was 6, but it’s high time I returned?! :P )

I think it’d be kinda fun to take a tour in a place where I’ve technically been before, but haven’t ever super-explored–there’s always something new to learn about a place! (I’m often like that when I reread books, hehe.) I’ve never had the chance to visit Old Salem, but I hope I get to someday! I’m glad you liked the images! :]!

  15. 2-mile hikes are my kinda hikes, hehehe. I wish I enjoyed it more, like everyone else!!

  18. Yes, of course. Muir Woods is great!! That and Mount Tamalpais are wonderful places to hike.

    1. Agreed! :D I hope I get to go back sometime!

  19. Beautiful photos. Yes, i do explore the area I am currently living in. My favorite part about nature zones is how they change from season to season. Definitely go back when it is not muddy. I enjoy these types of adventure updates. :)

    1. I hope you get to go sometime soon! :D We need to go on a Twirly Girls hike sometime! <3!

  23. OMG Farrah, we are neighbors! I live in Oakland and make it to Muir Woods a couple of times a year. I had no idea you grew up in the Bay Area, no wonder you’re so cool :) I did the easier trail with my Mother for her birthday a few years ago, and it was still challenging. We ran into deer, the trees are overwhelming, there is so much history there, I kept thinking of The Planet of the Apes; all the apes escaped to Muir Woods which would be a great home for them. lol
