Mount Storm King in Olympic National Park

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! We’re in Washington this week at Olympic National Park (virtually, anyway). (Let’s face it–with a name like Mount Storm King, how could we not hike it!?)

If you’re looking for a hike that makes you feel alive (whilst also partially fearing for your life), gives you a good workout along with beautiful views, and also makes you feel like a Disney princess, look no further! (I’ll explain shortly.)

The hike starts off through the forest and is pretty flat until you veer off on the Storm King trail.

It shares the same ~0.5 miles as part of the Marymere Falls Trail, so if you want to extend your hike, you can elect to not follow the sign (pictured below) on your left and go there first, or go when you come back. (We had a late start to the day so we unfortunately only had time for one.)

There are gorgeous lookout points every here and then during the switchbacks but for the most part, it’s a gradual incline all the way up.

The trail is well maintained up until about 2 miles in when you’re at about 1800ft elevation gain. After that point, you’re “on your own,” so to speak. (A lot of people do this trail though — it’s pretty popular!) My photos sadly do not do any justice to the steepness but to be fair, I was more preoccupied with being safe + not losing my phone.

If you look a little more closely, you can see the ropes starting here!

We happened upon another hiker on our way up and she told us that getting to the top was definitely worth it for the views, but to definitely use your hands and your butt and to not worry about your dignity because safety = most important. (She had just made it down and saw the person in front of her fall so she was understandably pretty shaken up.)

When you get to the top though, it’s an absolutely gorgeous view! We were vaguely concerned that it’d start raining harder while we were on our way up, which would’ve made the rest of the trail pretty dangerous.

Remember how I said that this hike would make you feel like a Disney princess? What was that all about?

There are lots of birds at the top who’ll come chill with you! They’re (obviously) looking for food. I’d recommend against this because it’s best to keep nature wild and this can harm them. (They’ll hang out with you and land on you even if you don’t offer!)

Of the hikes that I’ve done thus far that briefly gave me safety-related concerns, I’d say this one felt the least secure (the others being Angels Landing + Half Dome).

Although there are ropes, you can see evidence of fraying and it can get pretty darn slippery. It thankfully wasn’t too crowded since we went on a weekday somewhat later in the day. Expect a lottt of people if you’re going on a weekend.

This illustrates the steepness a bit more accurately!

If it’s been raining recently, you may want to bring gloves. Please don’t try to climb this during a storm either, or if you’re afraid of heights (unless you’re going for exposure therapy, I guess)!

this looks like quite the spectacular hike – i could definitely use some of this Mount Storm King air right now!

    1. I’d love some of that right now too! The fires are apparently going to descend a bunch of smog/smoke in by the end of this weekend over here. :[

  3. Wow, those are gorgeous views! Olympic is one of my favorite parks, but I don’t think I’m sure footed enough to do this hike so I’m glad I can see your pictures of it.

    1. Yeah, it definitely was! I didn’t think the bird would actually land on me since I wasn’t going to feed it but it hung out on my hand anyway! :]

What a beautiful hike and with gorgeous views! I’m terrified of heights that don’t feel secure so although I don’t think I could do it, it seems worth it for the scenery and views at the top though. Great tips on focusing on safety first!

    1. My brother’s not the biggest fan of heights too but he ended up getting all the way to the top anyway! We were definitely all for safety first though–I’m hoping that rope gets reinforced at some point!

  5. What an incredible hike! The views look stunning! I’m scared of heights so I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to tackle this one! What an impressive achievement though! Thanks for sharing the trail with us!

    1. Thanks for stopping by! It was definitely a fun hike but pretty iffy for if there’s a fear of heights involved.

The most nerve-racking part for me would be seeing the ‘safety lines’ fraying! I’ve been on difficult hikes where the steps are rotting and am always pleasantly surprised when it doesn’t break on me plunging me to my death- LOL

    1. Agreeeed. I definitely did not want to notice/see that (ignorance is bliss?) but couldn’t help it. (I have a rather strong sense of self-preservation. :D…) I’m glad no plunges were involved with this hike (or the ones with rotting steps! I’ve thought similar things with those, haha). :(

  6. Olympic National Park is absolutely stunning. I love all the greenery, the moss-covered trunks, the fern-carpeted forest floor. I have hiked in this park but never on the Storm King Trail. I would so love that, and would not be put off by its steepness. In all honesty, I can’t recall ever being on a trail fashioned with ropes for assistance. … so it MUST be very steep.

    1. I love doing trails like this! Those ropes would definitely concern me as well though. Wish I could get out west to do some hiking.

  7. Great hike with great views. My husband grew up in the area and tells me that we need to visit Olympic National Park.

    1. Yay! It’s definitely a beautiful park — I hope you get to go sometime!! :]

  8. Thanks so much for offering safety information for hiking Mt. Storm King! So many times people skip over that bit and it results in a lot of unprepared hikers. But I definitely agree, the views are well worth the hike. I even enjoy the forest views early on in the hike. I’ve always wanted to go to Olympia National Park.

  10. Indeed quit steep, but a spectacular hike! Those views are amazing. Olympic National park is now on my list for visiting next time I’m in the USA.
