This week’s [optional] theme for the Fit Dish link up (hosted by Jill Conyers @ JillConyers.com, & Jessica Joy @ TheFitSwitch.org) is Food Prep!
It just so happens that I wrote a fairly comprehensive post on this a while back, and not too much has changed since then! I’m still trying to finish off everything in my apartment, which is actually getting pretty darn empty! (With each trip back to WV, I’ve been moving as much as possible back with me so that I won’t have to make multiple trips this month.)
If you’ve ever been privy to my grocery hauls, you may perhaps have noticed that I’m somewhat of a yogurt fiend (mainly Greek yogurt). What can I say? I love me some probiotics. :O
Having yogurt on hand makes quick breakfasts + snacks that much easier…not to mention, the health benefits! The two bacteria found in every yogurt are L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus. Lactobacillus acidophilus is also a common one, and naturally hangs out in the urinary, GI, and genital tracts in humans.
Probiotics can be beneficial for regular digestion, constipation, lactose intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome. In clinic and at the hospital, we’ve prescribed it to many patients experiencing diarrhea from antibiotic use, and also to a number of patients with digestive issues.
So how excited was I to find a whole cookbook dedicated to yogurt!? <3
Genre: Cookbook
Pages: 142
Janet Fletcher is from California (yay for my home state!), and I love that she adores food diversity as much as I do (especially since I’ve been living in middle-of-nowhere for the past couple years!). She starts off with a discussion on the history of how yogurt came to be, and the science behind how it’s made, then dives into how to choose the right yogurt for your recipe, how to enhance its longevity, and health benefits!
As you might recall, I’m in the middle of packing up my apartment once again (it feels like I just moved in not so long ago! :[ ), so my apartment, although still a total mess, is pretty emptied out at this point. What I’m trying to get at is that I hope to make yogurt from scratch at some point, but today is not that day.
Making Yogurt At Home
Janet walks you through the entire process of making your own yogurt, from choosing the right milk and starter + incubation method, to picking out a yogurt maker (totally optional, but definitely an option you can consider!). She also discusses how to troubleshoot your yogurt, how to make Greek yogurt, yogurt cheese, and how to use whey.
Yogurt for Breakfast
This goes through all sorts of different breakfast combinations (e.g. Yogurt with Eggs, Yogurt with Nuts & Seeds, Yogurt with Granola…), as well as a bunch of delicious-sounding fresh breakfast ideas (kiwi, mandarin oranges + toasted coconut on yogurt, anyone? <3).
Appetizers & Salads
Cherry Tomato, Raita, Grated Carrot & Yogurt Salad with Cumin, Radish Tzatziki…
Soups
Chicken Soup with Toasted Pasta, Chickpeas & Yogurt, Shredded Beet & Cabbage Soup with Yogurt, Spicy Yellow Split Pea Soup with Tomato, Cumin & Yogurt…
Mostly Meat
Grilled Hanger Steak with Grilled Red Onion Raita, Harissa-Roasted Chicken with Sweet Peppers, Grilled Swordfish with Yogurt Tahini Sauce & Sumac…
Vegetables & Grains
Turkish-Spiced Green Beans wih Yogurt, Spinach with Brown Butter, Yogurt & Dukka, Rice Pilaf with Fava Beans & Yogurt Sauce…
Desserts
Poached Quinces with Yogurt & Pistachios, Yogurt Parfait with Peaches & Peanut Brittle, Greek Yogurt Sorbet, Indian Yogurt Pudding with Saffron, Cardamom, & Toasted Nuts (Shrikhand)…
Beverages
Ayran (a Turkish yogurt beverage), Banana Fig Smoothie…
As you can probably tell, the food photography is gorgeous, and there are over 50 recipes in here! :] They range from super-simple to somewhat more complex, with lots in between. Most of the recipes are highly versatile and adaptable, and as stated before, there’s a wealth of information contained in here on making your own yogurt!
I [obviously] wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone who’s vegan, but for anyone else (and especially anyone who likes yogurt!), this would be an awesome addition to your collection! :]
And you know how I like to share a[n adapted] recipe with you whenever possible! Here’s my simplified take on the Pineapple Lassi! (The recipe in the book only has 5 ingredients, but I was feeling lazy, so I adapted it and only used 3 ingredients!)
3-Ingredient Pineapple Lassi
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup pineapple, diced (preferably chilled)
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup pineapple juice
Instructions:
- Combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve chilled!
- Got any meal/food prep tips or suggestions?
- Are you a fan of yogurt?
- If you are, what’s your favorite way to enjoy it?

It definitely would be! :D!
While I am a big big big fan of yogurt (I have it every day) I don’t see myself as making it anytime soon! Zoe would probably find her way into it, and that would be the end of life as we know it…

Oh, hell. :[ That is a definite concern. I’d be worried that my muffin would get into mine too. :/ I heard that you can apparently make it in a slow cooker though(?)! I will have to look into that! :O
I’m a huge yogurt fan too! So many uses.

I love yogurt – in fact, I worked my way through a container of Greek Yogurt as I read your post! :) This cookbook sounds fantastic – and so does this pineapple lassi!
Author
hahaha, awesome! ;P I have a couple little containers of Greek yogurt left in my fridge that I can’t wait to polish off! :]
I love pineapple and I love lassi – so you’ve basically combined two of my favorite things. YUM!!!! I might try a mango pineapple lassi though. I’ve been obsessed with mango lately.

Ohhh my goodness, that sounds all sorts of amazing. I love mango too, so a mango pineapple lassi would be glorious!!
A whole cookbook devoted to yogurt? Who would have thought? I happen to have one in my lunchbox today- one of those greek yogurt whips! :) Your pineapple drink looks great I will remember that when my pineapples ripen! I have 5 of them in the yard growing nicely in the Florida sun!

Ahhh! So jealous! I want to get to grow pineapples! (Is it sad that I only learned within the past decade or so that pineapples didn’t grow on trees? ._.)
I love making my own yogurt in a slow cooker. So yummy! I would have to check out this book!

:O! That’s awesome! Is it hard to do?
That cookbook looks amazing! I usually do a whole bunch of cooking on Sunday night and have leftovers throughout the week. It’s so nice to be able to come home after a long day and just pop something in the microwave.

Agreed! I hate having to cook when I get home and am already tired, so having healthy meals I’ve already made definitely makes life easier! :D
Lassi is so delicious :) I can’t believe there’s an entire book dedicated to yogurt :)

hahaha, same, but I’m very happy that there is! :P
Oh I love yogurt, I would have one every day for lunch if I could!
I use yogurt for everything too, its a great substitute for recipe’s that call for butter or shortening, and it reduces the calories in them. In fact my sister is the queen of coming up with new ways to use yogurt in dishes, LOL She made this yogurt zucchini bread last fall, that was really delicious!
This looks like a great cookbook, I am definitely going to have to consider getting this one for my sis, she would love it!

Agreed! :D I love using it to sub out unhealthy ingredients in baking (+ a bunch of other types of recipes).
It really does sound like your sister would love this book! That yogurt zucchini bread sounds like it would be delicious! *-*
I can see yogurt making in my future. I am trying to make more of my foods from scratch. We already make all of our sauces and dressings from scratch. Time to add yogurt. Thanks for the book suggestion!

Awesome! :D I’ve been meaning to make more things from scratch, but haven’t been especially proactive about it. Must change that! :O
One of my cooking goals this summer is to make my own dairy-free yogurt!

Ooo, looking forward to reading about the process on your blog! (I’m going to happily assume that you’re going to write about it. <3 )
I LOVE lassis! Mango lassis were my favorite growing up. I can’t wait to try this! :)
Author
I adore mango lassis as well! Pragati mentioned a mango pineapple lassi and I am pretty much sold on all levels. I need to make one of those! *-*
Wow, that book makes yogurt looks so freaking good. I mean, I like yogurt, but that makes me just want to sing about yogurt. WOW. Great book. I love your book reviews by the way. And, way to go again with clearing out the apartment food. WOOT. I am excited to check out this book. I have been thinking about avoiding dairy, but, I think not, especially after this. Haha! Much love, friend. : )

Many thanks! :D (And seriously, there are so many things I wanna make from here! sigh!)
I’m sorry about the no-longer-avoiding-dairy thing! If yogurt didn’t exist, I’d definitely have an easier time with doing that! :P
Ooo this looks like such a beautiful cookbook! I love cooking with yogurt. I would really like to try making my own yogurt someday, but I’m always worried I’m going to somehow mess it up and make myself super sick with too much bacteria hahah. Thanks for sharing that recipe!

What a great book review! You are totally making me want to get that book since I love all things yogurt. I think I will be making your lassi recipe with some coconut yogurt for breakfast or dessert…yummy! Thank you for the inspiration

Great review Farrah. So many free recipes online but every now and then a hard copy deserves to be bought. This looks like one of those books.

Hi Farrah, I hope you’ve been well! This book looks fantastic and I love your lassi! Being Indian, I’ve been drinking lassis since I was a little girl but I’ve never had one with pineapple. This needs to change stat ;)
