Welcome to Travel Tuesday! We are back again in West Virginia this week forrr a hike in New River Gorge National Park! I hiked the Endless Wall Trail a few years ago before it became a national park and always wanted to go back to explore more, so here’s Long Point Trail!
Long Point Trail in New River Gorge National Park
Distance: 3 miles (out + back)
Elevation: 344 ft
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 1 hour
Trailhead Address: 38.0416, -81.07814
Parking: Free!
This trail is probably one of the best ones to take if you’re trying to get a great panoramic view of the gorge + the New River Gorge Bridge. Most of the trail is pretty chill/relaxed, but the last part of the hike does include a little elevation gain.
Please note that this is a really popular trail so if solitude is what you’re looking for, this would not be the best of choices. It is a gorgeous trail though so I do think it’s worth it!
Long Point Trail is mostly shaded by a variety of pine, hemlock + deciduous trees, but I’d recommend bringing a hat + sun protection anyway. (The last part is pretty exposed + skin cancer sucks.)
There are also very steep 50 foot drops, so be careful (for yourself, your phones, your kids if you have/bring them…)! Please do not go off trail to get that “perfect” shot.
There are rhododendron thickets (pink = Catawba rhododendron) + mountain laurel and Great rhododendron (the West Virginia state flower!) along the trail.
- You can actually bike this trail all the way up to 0.2 miles away from the end of the trail! There’s a bike rack there where you can park/lock your bike!
- Pets are allowed on this trail if they’re on a <6 ft leash!
- Looking for more hikes in New River Gorge National Park or in West Virginia?
- Endless Wall Trail is one of my favorite trails of all time. <3
- The Greenbrier River Trail is a super long + flat trail with swimming holes and greenery everywhere. A lot of people bikepack this trail!
- Seneca Rocks Trail is popular for climbers + also has a hiking trail that you can follow!

this looks lovely! I would love to try something like this :)
It was a good “bang for your buck” hike! :)
Ooooh beautiful, and you went before it became a national park!? Does that make you into some kind of epic hipster hiker? (knowing before it was cool…!?)
I love spots like this that look down into deep canyons, but that are lush and full of vegetation so you can’t always tell how epic the surrounding scenery is!
