Kaiwi Shoreline Trail

I actually did the hike for the Kaiwi Shoreline Trail before my Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail hike, but I figured I’d change up the order a bit to throw some curveballs at ya!

I hadn’t actually been planning on doing this hike, mostly because I had no idea it existed, but when my snorkeling guide dropped me off at the base of the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail, she told me I might as well do this one too since it was right next to it!

There’s a nice breeze along this trail, but still not too much shade, so I’d definitely recommend sunscreen. (I’d recommend sunscreen for most if not all outdoor activities in Hawai’i, just for the record.)

This is more of a leisurely stroll than it is a hike, but it’s a pretty one–the beach at the end is definitely worth it!

When you get to the fork in the road, take a right to go down the Kaiwi Shoreline Trail and make a left if you’re going for the lighthouse!

It’s pretty flat all the way through and it didn’t take long at all (maybe 15 minutes, tops?) to reach the beach from here. I “hiked” (strolled) this in flip flops.

You can see Pele’s Chair here (that rock formation on the top left of the photo)! Pele is the Hawaiian fire goddess, but she’s also recognized as the goddess of volcanoes. :]

It’s also a really nice place to have a picnic! :] Just don’t litter–please carry out your trash!

Here’s a clearer photo of Pele’s Chair! :]

If you want to find a fairly secluded beach, this is a pretty good bet! (I went here on a Monday morning, so it wasn’t crowded at all–just a couple kids jumping off of the plank in the next-next picture!kaiwishoreline7

Once you hit the beach, you’ll hit the rocky shoreline if you take a left, and sandy shores on the right! It’s an awesome place to go swimming! :]

Please don’t do anything too crazy off of it because the water really isn’t that deep and it’s pretty rocky at the bottom!

That water was so beautiful. I miss it there. <3 It was such a gorgeous place!!

  • Do you like incorporating little hikes along with a big one?
  • If you like hiking, what do you usually like hiking near/to? Waterfalls? Streams? Woods? Shoreline?
