Welcome to Travel Tuesday! I’m virtually taking you along with me to Minnesota from my summer road trip–more specifically, the Kabetogama Lake and Beaver Pond Overlook over at Voyageurs National Park!
These are two super short hikes totaling less than a mile overall (~0.8 miles, to be exact). Both are located super close to the Ash River Visitor Center.
Voyageurs National Park is located in suuuper northern Minnesota (close to the Canadian border). It’s pretty rural up here, so if you’re staying the night, definitely take a look at the night skies too–if it’s a clear night, you may be able to see the Milky Way. Sometimes, you may even see the aurora borealis (northern lights)!
We went in the summer, but the park also has cool winter programs, like a Night Light Snowshoe Hike, a Birch Bark Crafting Workshop (where you make your own birch bark star), snowshoe lacing, woodworking (to make a bird house), a guided ski program, poetry reading, sledding…
But onward with the two overlook hikes!
Kabetogama Lake and Beaver Pond Overlook
Kabetogama Lake Overlook
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 0.4 miles out and back
Elevation: 59 feet
Admission/Parking: Free!
Trailhead Address: 9899-9897 Mead Wood Rd, Orr, MN 55771
This is the third pullout on the left if you’re driving to the Ash River Visitor Center. It’s handicap-accessible and will give you a great view of Kabetogama Lake.
Beaver Pond Overlook
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 0.4 miles out and back
Elevation: 6 feet
Trailhead Address: Mead Wood Rd, Orr, MN 55771
This is the second trailhead on the left if you’re driving to the Ash River Visitor Center. It has an uphill section that’ll lead you to an area above the beaver pond. There aren’t actually any beavers here anymore, but it’s still a pretty + short hike!
Although this hike/walk is on the easier side, it does get kinda slippery, especially if it’s rained recently, so be careful!

Imagine playing in thease kinds of woods when you were a child… I did, my grandparents had a small cottage in the middle of the forrest, so I spent my summers in the woods :D
That sounds so fun! I wish I’d gotten to do that, but better late than never! I love being outdoors. <3! :]
What a beautiful place to visit! I am lucky to live in NH where we have tons of beautiful hiking.
