in disguise

I’m convinced that this school is actually a culinary school in disguise. How is it that everyone here knows how to make such amazing food!?”

Y’know what? She may be onto something there.

My personal theory is that the restaurants here (although a lot of them really are awesome) are somewhat lacking in variety, so instead, we learn to make everything on our own. (Or maybe that’s just what happened to me. I’ve definitely had to learn to make do without a lot of the things I’ve always kinda taken for granted.) I was pretty spoiled on the food diversity front back in the bay area!

This is my plate from the Wilderness Medicine dinner! :]

Salad, cornbread, venison tenderloin, mashed potatoes, chili, bear stew, squirrel stew, roasted brussel sprouts, venison shepherd’s pie, turtle cheesecake, chocolate eclairs, green bean casserole, cole slaw…

All in all, twas a pretty awesome experience. I definitely can’t say I’ve ever had bear or squirrel before, and although they technically go against my food philosophies, I figured I’d never really have a chance to try either again.

The bear was pretty game-y, and the squirrel basically tastes like chicken. My favorite would probably have to be venison (which I actually have had before!), and the desserts were also fantastic! I wish I’d been able to pilfer the recipes for all of these from everyone, but alas, you’ll just have to make do with 66% of the ones that I made!

I made 3 different dishes for the dinner–you can find the 2/3 of them here:

I still think it’s kinda hilarious that my school thought I was an officer of the Wilderness Medicine club. :P In actuality, I’m not even a member of it (although not for lack of want–I just figured that I should probably not go overboard, since I was already part of 6 different clubs–so continues my very long history of trying to do everything).
