Welcome to our weekly Foodie Friday link up! I’m linking up with Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama + Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl to create awesome healthy recipes each week! This week’s theme is Seasonal Finds!
I’m kinda skipping out on this week’s theme in favor of one of my favorite snacks…popcorn! :]! I also have an awesome giveaway so make sure you enter if you want your own popcorn maker + butter-flavored coconut oil. (I’m taking part in a Barleans blogger challenge and received free products for this review.)
Have you ever had hurricane popcorn? It’s a popular Hawaiian snack that’s super super addictive and delicious (especially if you like savory)! It first originated from a pushcart in Kaneohe and got so popular that they started packaging em’ and even making flavor packets so people could make their own at home/sneak em’ into movie theaters!
I decided to try my hand at making my own, and as I only ever use coconut oil to make my popcorn, what better type to use for this than Barleans’ butter-flavored coconut oil? It’s certified organic, vegan, with no dairy/gluten/soy/cholesterol and can be used in a 1:1 ratio substitution for butter in baking, cooking, and frying under 375. :]! I’ve used it in the past to make cookies and also to make regular butter popcorn and results have been awesome. :D
I was also sent a Lekue Popcorn Maker! It’s super easy to use–just add popcorn kernels and heat in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, then add whatever ingredients you want and there you go! It’s also collapsible (yay for space-saving contraptions)!
Hurricane Popcorn
Hurricane Popcorn
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
- 1 tbsp butter-flavored coconut oil
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp furikake seasoning*
- 1/4 cup nori maki arare* rice crackers with seaweed, chopped (if desired)
Instructions
Popcorn Maker Instructions
- Fill silicone bowl** with un-popped popcorn kernels, then cover loosely with lid and microwave for 2-3 minutes (or press the popcorn button if your microwave has that)!
- Heat coconut oil + soy sauce in sauce pan until melted, then drizzle over popcorn. Toss to mix + top with furikake seasoning and arare crackers.
Stovetop Instructions
- Place popcorn kernels in one layer on the bottom of a deep pot and turn stove on medium heat. Remove popcorn from heat if there's an interval of 1-2 seconds between the popping, turn stove off.
Notes
This is really, really addicting, so if you don’t want to eat the entire bowl like I did, make sure you have people around to share it with you. Or don’t. ;P
Enter to win your own container of butter-flavored coconut oil + Lékué popcorn maker! (Must be 18+yo and a U.S. resident to enter!) Giveaway ends on 5/31! :]

Farrah this is just too cool! I don’t think I’ve had popcorn quite as exciting as this before – the most exciting I’ve made my popcorn to be is by adding chili and coconut sugar to it with some salt! Awesome giveaway – thanks for it and hope ya have a wonderful weekend!

I’m pretty traditional. I am happy with plain old salt on my popcorn.

I’ve used a popcorn popper before and loved it. Kept it simple and ate naked popcorn. I love adding some cinnamon too :)
