On my way back from West Virginia to New Jersey last September, I scheduled in another couple pit stops! The trip back ended up taking 10 hours, so I was pretty glad I had those breaks!
Humpback Bridge is pretty close to Falling Spring Falls–I’d actually originally planned to tackle them both in one go and then visit somewhere else on my way back, but by the time I finally got to Covington, I was really missing everyone at Please Save A Cat and just wanted to get back there as quickly as possible.
Humpback Bridge was built in 1857 and is the oldest remaining covered bridge in Virginia! The reasoning behind covered bridges was to increase their longevity and to keep the midpoint above flood waters.
It’s located in Alleghany County (west of Covington) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. :]
You can find it adjacent to US Highway 60 off Rumsey Road. Get off Exit 10 in Virginia off Interstate 64 and you’ll be just under a mile away from the bridge!
There’s a (free) parking area, restrooms and a picnic area available. It’s a popular place for families with children and/or pets since there’s access to Dunlap Creek and you can go wading in it in the summer/fall (before it gets too cold!).
I feel like this would be an especially gorgeous place to visit in the fall with all the changing colors of the leaves! I came here in early September, so a tad too early for that, but still a really pretty place to visit! The families there were nice and one of them randomly gave me a water bottle fresh outta their cooler!
You can also see part of the LOVEwork project at Humpback Bridge (+ check out the other LOVEwork locations)!
The “L” was made with historic bricks from the area and the “O” is a gear from one of the old paper machines, representing the history of manufacuutring in the area. The “V” is created by a tree in the creek bank, and the “E” was created with railroad ties representing the history of the railrood in the community–it was knocked over by the flood when I went, but hopefully it’ll be back up again soon!
I stopped by at Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Harrisonburg on the way back to NJ and had this delicious meal!
- Are there any historic landmarks in your area?
- Does your state have any cool projects like the LOVEworks project in Virginia?

OMG, I love these cute little adorable bridges, we don’t have many like this is California, as you know. Look at all the colorful leaves. I bet that water was refreshing.
haha, yes, very true! I don’t know if I know of any like it in CA (I have yet to explore so much of CA though–so sad!)!
The water was indeed super refreshing! :]
