Welcome to Travel Tuesday! Mount Tam is part of the NorCal “Six Pack of Peaks” Challenge as well!
I did this hike with my best friend and his boyfriend last year–the last hike before COVID-19 hit-hit and the shelter in place order went into place.
Hiking Mount Tam
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: Variable! We took the day to meander everywhere!
Trailhead Address: W Ridgecrest Blvd, Stinson Beach, CA 94970 (this gets you to the Rock Spring Trailhead)
Parking: While there is no main entrance fee, the East Peak, Pantoll and Bootjack trailheads all have parking fees. (We parked at Rock Spring, which was free!)
The park is open from 7am to sunset year-round. You might get fined if you stay past dark, so please plan accordingly!
There are miles and miles of trails in Mount Tam! We did a lot of meandering, but the rough loop we created/ended up taking took us from Rock Spring to the Mountain Top Trail to West Peak, and then to East Peak.
The fire lookout is at the top of East Peak (2571 feet above sea level!) and gives you beautiful views of the bay!
From there, we decided to take the Mountain Top Trail to West Peak to East Peak, then down the Old Railroad Grade to West Point Inn and back to Rock Spring Trail!
We’re also hoping to do the Stinson Beach trail to Mount Tam at some point! :] After our hike, we decided to get our “return to civilization meal” at a restaurant in Sausalito called Fish!
The fried Brussels sprouts + Saigon salmon sandwich with fries were both amaaaaazing. We loved the Brussels sprouts so much that it inspired these Air Fryer Roasted Vegetables!
- Have you ever been to Mount Tam?
- Check out the other “6 pack of peaks” hikes I’ve done!: Mount Sizer, Rose Peak + Mount Diablo! I’m over halfway through em’!

I’ve never heard of Mount Tam but it looks like a fun trail to hike, especially if you get to eat those fabulous-looking food afterwards!
The return-to-civilization meal is always one of my favorites! :P

The closest I’ve come is eating Cowgirl Creamery Mount Tam cheese! Which I did enjoy :)
Ooo, I’ve heard amazing things about Cowgirl Creamery but haven’t tried their stuff yet! *-* Soon, hopefully!

This looks like a really nice hike to go on. It’s great that a lot of it is shaded too so you can hike in the summer months as well.
Agreed! I’m all about the shaded hikes lately!
What an amazing payoff at the top, made all the more memorable by the global pandemic-monium that followed, eh? Those brussell sprouts are also a worthy reward for your efforts – YUM!
