A Vacation-Inspired Recipe: Start unpacking your favorite vacation memories. Think about a trip you took state-side or internationally and create a healthy recipe from an unforgettable meal you enjoyed. Or, create a recipe from a native ingredient you saw or tasted on your travels.
Back in June, I traveled alone for the first time and took myself to Hawai’i as a graduation present to myself! (More specific posts for said vacation to follow every other Tuesday for Travel Tuesday!)
I had a lot of super delicious eats while I was out there (poke bowls, acai bowls, shaved ice, musubi…basically almost all my favorite things ever). I’d like to recreate all of those at some point, but since residency just started and I’m trying to survive, we’re going with the easiest one first!
First things first…have you ever heard of POG?
It’s a tropical juice drink that consists of…
- Passionfruit (aka “liliko’i”)
- Orange
- Guava
I had it as one of the flavors in my shaved ice from Waiola Shave Ice! :D
I am all about all things passionfruit-related…and pretty much anything tropical (aside from papaya, which, try as I might, I cannot learn to like). I was all about having it everywhere I could when I was in Hawai’i. They serve this drink on Hawai’ian airlines, all over Hawai’i, and in bulk at Costco…but only in Hawai’i (as far as I know).
But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it anywhere else!
It might be a little bit difficult if you live in the middle of nowhere, but since that is no longer the case for me, I actually managed to locate some frozen passionfruit pulp(?!?) at the grocery store underneath my gym. (Yes, there’s a legit grocery store there. It’s wonderfully convenient.)
I also picked up some guava nectar and had some orange juice at the ready, so…that’s all you really need to make this! :]
Hawaiian POG Drink
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup frozen passionfruit pulp
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1/2 cup guava nectar
- ice cubes (optional; not pictured)
Instructions:
- Blend all ingredients until smooth.
- Serve chilled!
Hawaiian POG Drink
Check out my version of a vacation-inspired recipe for a Hawai'ian favorite -- the POG (Passionfruit-Orange-Guava) drink!Servings: 1 personIngredients
- 1/2 cup frozen passionfruit pulp
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1/2 cup guava nectar
- ice cubes optional; not pictured
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients until smooth.
- Serve chilled!
Word of advice, because although very tasty, this can get pretty sweet, so you may want to add in some more water based on your sweetness preference.
If you happen to have popsicle molds and somehow have extra of this, pour the rest in and you’ll have yourself the perfect summer treat to cool down with! :]

Sounds so delicious! Also, high five on not liking papaya. One of the first things Angel and I agreed upon was our mutual hatred of papaya even though we both come from families that love it. My family even had a papaya tree in our backyard at one point! No good.

hehehe, good to know I’m not the only one! My parents love papaya, but both my brother and I haven’t ever really been fans. I’d be super happy with a mango tree though!? *-*
Well I want a popsicle one!!! (Save one for me!)

Darn! I kinda write out these recipes weeks before I actually publish em’. I can always make more though! :]!!
Never heard of POG, but I’d give it a whirl. I really like the taste of guava I have discovered recently. And papaya, yum!

Yay for guava! I keep trying to give papaya another chance, but alas! ._.
I’ve never been to Hawaii, but I ca guarantee I’d love this! The flavor remind me of Costa Rica (which is one of MY favorite vacation spots..although I don’t know if I can call it a “spot” if I’ve only ever been there once?)

I hope you get to at some point! I got to stop in Costa Rica for a half-day when I was on a cruise with my family–I wanna go back and spend more time there! <3
This sounds delicious – a real holiday drink! I have to agree about papaya too – It’s one of the only tropical fruits I’ve tried that I really didn’t like.

It doesn’t get more refreshing that this! On a side note, my husband loves papaya, but like you, I’m just not a big fan. Oh, and I’m totally craving poke right now, thanks :)

I keep wanting to give it a chance since there’s this Chinese dessert soup that uses it and is supposed to be super good for you but…I just can’t do it, haha.
