Linda @ The Fitty tagged me in this questionnaire and I thought it’d be a fun end-of-year questionnaire to do! I did a “10 confessions” a couple years ago that she tagged me in too, but this one’s focused on fitness goals!
Fitness Goals for 2018
What are my goals?
- To become a family medicine physician!
- To continue volunteering with community outreach programs
- To pursue my outside hobbies: powerlifting, Polynesian dancing, salsa, ballroom dancing, BJJ.
(This is my fitness journey thus far.)
What type of body does this require?
I’d need a strong and flexible body to do most of the things that I like and am currently pursuing (or planning to pursue). Having better endurance would probably also be a plus in the realms of future races. :P
Life/Health Skills Goals?
Before I Graduate:
- Run the Rutgers 8k.
- Half-marathon?
- Perform in RU Salsa Project 2017 and 2018
- Compete in RU Ballroom Dancing
- Compete in another powerlifting competition.
- Start/get better at rock climbing.
- Finish off my hiking bucket list with my friend!
After I Graduate:
- Cross-country roadtrip for a National Park/food tour
- Sports Medicine fellowship
- Get a job back in northern CA.
- Adopt a rescue dog
- Join a halau
- Get back into pole + aerial silks
- Obstacle course race
10 years:
- Be back in California (…or be in Hawai’i? :P )
- Work at a place that I love.
- Volunteer at PHAC.
- Continue with the above listed hobbies. :D…
- Be done paying off my student loans
- …This is really far in advance and that’s about all I have for now.
What’s my current physical condition?
I think I’m doing okay, considering my current schedule. I’m fairly strong, but definitely could stand to work on my workout consistency more. I recently started running again, and I’d love to work on my flexibility!
- Awareness: 9/10
- Flexibility: 5/10
- Strength: 8/10
- Endurance: 5/10
- Exercise discipline: 7.5/10
What’s my current real age of specific movement skills?
I’d say probably advanced in lifting, novice for running. I ran a half marathon 7 years ago but it was my first and only race. :P I’m signed up to do the Rutgers 8k next year though, and possibly planning on doing a half marathon later on in the year!
What health professionals do I need to consult?
I haven’t actually had an actual doctor’s appointment in ages, but I’m surrounded by them on pretty much a daily basis, so…curbside consults for the win! I have two friends who are physical therapists, so I guess if I come across any of that goodness, I can maybe curbside them too.
What classes can I possibly take?
I’m taking salsa + ballroom dancing classes right now with Rutgers and am in a Polynesian dance performance group. I’d love to find a way to also join the BJJ club (it meets at the same time as ballroom :[ ) and to also start rock climbing (+ mountain biking once the weather improves)!
What kind of workout do I want to do?
- Flexibility: yoga, pole, aerial silks/lyra, BJJ
- Strength: powerlifting!
- Endurance: dance, Gixo, running
Where can I work out?
The plus side to being counted as Rutgers staff is that I can get into all their gyms for free, and I also have my membership to the fitness + wellness center affiliated with my hospital. When the weather sucks butt outside, I always have Gixo too!
What am I going to do this week to move towards my goal?
I’ve been trying to commit to strength training 2-3x/week, dance or running on the off-days, with 1 rest day per week.
- What’s something that you’re working to accomplish?
- Do you have any fitness goals for 2018?

It sounds like you’re pretty active! I think it’s great that you have your goals set out for the year and it sounds like you have an idea on how to achieve them. I think you’ll do great! I’m working on running a marathon next fall so I’m keeping my fitness until I start training.

I love all these! I’m a fitness junkie and just had my second baby three months ago. So my main goal is getting my strength levels back up and seeing if I can clear a 200lb deadlift this year!!
Aww, congrats on the new addition to your family! :]! Best of luck to you on your fitness goals too! I’m trying to get my deadlift back to where it was so I can hopefully surpass it soon! *-*
This is such a fun read. I’m amazed at all you are able to fit in with your medical school. And a road trip across the country sounds so fun!!
haha, wouldn’t it be?! *-* I’m done with med school, but residency definitely still makes me feel like I’m kindasorta still a student! :P I’ve been trying to stuff things in during my pockets of free time!

This is amazing! I really need to work on getting healthier in 2018. I have months where I’m pretty good, and then I just fall off. It’s an awful rollercoaster. Good for you for having so many goals and well thought out ways to reach them!

Oh believe me, I definitely have days/weeks/months where I’m doing reallyyy well and other times where I completely fall off the wagon, haha. Life is all about the balance though! :D?

It always amazes me how much you do – since you work so much too! I need that motivation for 2018. LOL I’m back in two dance classes (tap and hip hop) so I want to keep up with that. I also want to start a routine for doing yoga; I took two classes in the last couple months, so I want to keep going once a week (they have it every Sunday). Besides that, I just need to get out and walk more when the weather permits. I’d love to up my endurance and flexibility.

You are amazing!! I love that you make time for your health in between all the residency craziness!! :) Definitely my 2018 #goal !!!
Aww, thank you! It’s definitely a struggle sometimes (I didn’t make it to the gym on any of the days during the 2 weeks I was on hospital service :'( ), but I’m a fan of the “what you can, when you can” philosophy, hehehe. Best of luck to you on your goals! :D

That is a tough question! I have some personal goals I would love to achieve but to select one, I would have to choose the one that, if I don’t achieve it, could end my life prematurely. I’ve mentioned it in other answers, so forgive me for repeating it: I must quit smoking.
I hope you achieve that one! It’s one of the best things you could do for your health!

It’s good you have your goals sorted out. Knowing what you want and setting goals make it possible to achieve them. I love that you’re able to make time for exercise despite a busy schedule. I’m a fitness junkie too and I love yoga but mixing it with studies I suppose is quite tough. You’re such an inspiration!

It can definitely get hard to balance it all sometimes, but I like the “what you can, when you can” philosophy and Gixo fits in really well with that. :] Best of luck to you on your goals!
