Welcome back to Travel Tuesday! I’m taking you through [the outside of] another castle today! We were actually driving from Inverness over to Skye and [unfortunately] didn’t make it here quickly enough to get in before it closed! On the plus side, Eilean Donan Castle is still absolutely gorgeous from the outside, so it was a-okay!
Eilean Donan Castle
The Eilean Donan Castle is a picturesque 13th-century castle located in the Scottish Highlands. It sits on an island where 3 different lochs meet and is said by some to be the most beautiful castle in Scotland. (We managed to visit a couple, so I’ll let you decide for yourself once I share em’ all. :O )
It’s open from…
- 10am – 4pm daily from February 1-March 24/October 29-Dec 30
- 10am – 6pm from March 25-October 29th
(Last admission is 1 hour prior to closing!)
Location: Dornie by Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8DX, Scotland
Parking: Free!
Admission Fee: £7.50 (adult price), but you can check for full details on opening hours + admission here!
They have a visitor center, gift shop and coffee shop there as well.
The Eilean Donan Castle is a super super popular wedding venue, and also has a Holiday Cottage that you can book (it is crazy expensive though, so unless you’re rolling in money…).
It’s also just 8 miles from the Isle of Skye, so if you’re visiting there, you should definitely try to make a stop here (or vice versa)!
As with Ricketts Glen State Park, I feel like it’d be awesome to see this place in every season–I bet it’d be absolutely beautiful!
Fun fact: There is a super awesome mashup of Fight Song / Amazing Grace that The Piano Guys filmed here (+ this is also part of where the Outlander TV series was filmed!)
- What’s your favorite season for traveling? We came here in the spring. I’d love to see it in the wintertime too though (even despite my dislike of cold weather)!

I love exploring historical places! This would be so cool!
We almost always travel in (or to, if we go to the northern hemisphere) spring or summer as we don’t like the cold!!
