I’m on week 13 and the end is in sight (in terms of finishing my crazy work schedule for the time being…and vacation)! I thought I’d celebrate early by sharing a new cookbook with you–Eating Clean, by Amie Valpone!
Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body
By Amie Valpone
Genre: Cookbook
Pages: 392
How To Detox Your Diet and Your Life
As you might have guessed, the first part of Eating Clean takes you through a tour of sorts on how to “detox” your diet and life!
Normally, I dislike the word “detox” because I associate it with quick-fix advertisements on juice/tea cleanses and the like, but thankfully that’s not the case in this book (although I did take issue with fluoride being described as a toxin–fluoride helps to lower the risk of dental caries, decayed, missing, or filled primary + permanent teeth!).
That being said, I liked the “eating clean manifesto” Amie shared!
The first rule, “There is no one ideal diet,” is super true–for instance, I really like soy/tofu/eggs, so I’m skipping out on eliminating those. The book sheds light on areas in your life where you could be unknowingly exposing yourself to toxins. She also walks you through a 21-day elimination diet to help you eliminate potential trigger foods and figure out what to replace it with.
Amie also has a section on steps to take to clean out + make over your kitchen/pantry (and home in general), from the edible substances to the tools and cleaning products you use! She helps to decipher food labels, and gives great healthy-eating travel tips + how to explain clean eating to your family/friends if they’re not being supportive.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you might know that I’m a fan of making my own skincare products! This book even has a section on that, including ingredients to try to avoid, what to look for in clean products, and how to make your own beauty products!
Trish and I are now meal prep buddies (yes, even though she lives in Delaware and I’m in NJ)! We recently happened upon a health food store and are likely going to be meeting up at some point to make DIY skincare stuffs too. :]

I don’t buy into the whole detox culture, but I am all about clean food and real flavors!

Same! I think our kidneys and livers do a great job! :P but I do like the idea of tasty recipes and cleaning out/up my kitchen and home in general! :p
I love clean eating, it’s the best approach everyone should take for a healthier lifestyle in general. However, I do have to say, I really ABHOR the words “detox” and/or “cleanse”. They sound so kitschy, and they sound like something that people can do for oh, 5 days and then revert back to their old ways! :(

Agreed! I’m with you on those words–they used to mean what they were supposed to but people have definitely gone overboard with it and now the mental associations I get when I hear those words just make me sad. :[

The only reason I’d give it a try is due to the fact that it is clean food. I agree that our bodies need food that’s really a ‘food’ and not synthetic mix of some flavors and chemicals.
Nice review Farrah.

Looks like a great cookbook! I just finished Blogging for Books review last week so I’m going to see if they have this cookbook in stock!

Sounds like an interesting angle for a cookbook! I’m not much for all the specific diets out there, but in general, I like it when a good chunk of my diet is good old homemade from scratch veggie dishes. Almost any veggie soup is especially my favorite. I definitely think it’s a smart idea to not overindulge on unhealthy food ingredients…especially because there are so many healthy, natural foods that taste so very good!

Same here! I’ve definitely been eating way more veggie dishes lately because it’s a lot cheaper and I’m trying to save money! :P (Also yay for healthiness, haha.) I’m really glad there are so many healthy/natural/affordable options out there! :]

Right!? :D I’ve made a similar ice cream with coconut milk on here, but I added in a bit of passionfruit jam! <3!

This is interesting. I need to spend some time learning about clean eating. I already am part of the way there. I do make a lot of food from scratch but need to stay away from my habits and refined sugar.

That’s awesome! I’ve been trying to make most of my food from scratch and to make healthier dietary choices too but there are definitely days where I just want a bunch of fries! :O

Food coma only in the sense that I get super sleepy in the afternoon if I have em for lunch! I love potatoes! :o
Hi Fairyburger, just checking in to see how you’re doing and if you’re participating in A-Z again this year? I know how busy you are, and I applaud you for engaging in eating clean. I only just recently came across this expression, and I am kind of hooked. It makes so much sense, right?
