I am rather sad to announce that this is going to be my last Blogging For Books review because their blogger program is no more! It’ll be okay though–I’m sure I’ll still have a bunch of other things to share!
In the meantime, I wanna share a book that goes hand in hand with Earth Day (coming up in 11 days)!
Eat a Little Better: Great Flavor, Good Health, Better World
Great Flavor. Good Health. Better World.
By Sam Kass
Genre: Food/Cooking
Pages: 248
Eat a Little Better: Great Flavor, Good Health, Better World is written by Sam Kass, the former chef to the Obamas and the White House food policy advisor. The book is divided into 4 simple sections:
- Introduction
- Eat More Vegetables
- Be A Better Meat Eater
- Eat More Grains and Beans
Intro
I really like the author’s philosophy on food and how he places the focus more on eating better, as opposed to “right.” In the intro, he goes into different ways to do that, what matters vs. what doesn’t, how to start cooking more and reducing food waste (check out my post on different ways to reduce food waste too!), changes that you can make starting today, and how to build better + more nutritious meals (something I learned more about during my Nutrition rotation as a medical student!)!
Veggies
The veggie section offers recipes like Roasted Roots and Spices, Grilled Cauliflower Steaks, Chile-Roasted Corn, Shaved Zucchini Salad, Charred Cabbage ,and even stuff to dress up your potatoes (e.g. maple-cider vinegar, goat cheese-herb for your whipped sweet potatoes)!
Meat
The meat section includes recipes like Sardine Smash Toasts, Grilled Clams, Slow-Roasted Salmon, Barbecued Chicken, Beer-Braised Pork Shoulder, Grilled Rib Eye, and recipes for sauces–for instance, chimichurri, cherry steak sauce, green tomato salsa verde, horseradish + parsley…
I can’t eat a number of the seafood options listed, but there were plenty of other options! :]
Grains/Beans
I liked this section because it gave me a whole lot of inspiration on preparing grains–“Four Ways with ______” was pretty awesome (one for every season!). Fried Brown Rice with kohlrabi, avocado + sprouts (spring), okra, sausage and tomato (summer), mushrooms and edamame (fall), butternut squash and kale (winter). They also had this for quinoa, risotto, bulgur, couscous, and lentils!
As with my favorite cookbooks, this one has gorgeous photos of all sorts of delicious foods! Each recipe comes with a short intro, ingredient list, instructions, serving size, “active” cooking time and time from start to finish. Few (if any?) of the recipes included surpass 10 ingredients, with most of them around the 5-7 range.
Healthy, simple, tasty, and packed with tips on reducing waste–basically everything I love in a cookbook!
- Eat a Little Better will be coming out on April 17th! :] What’s something you can do to make your eating habits a little healthier?
- What’s your favorite vegan recipe?

I love the concept of 5-7 ingredients….if I see a recipe and it calls for numerous things, I usually will take a pass on even reading how to prepare it.
Me too! It just gets too daunting! :[

Tis saddening, but it’ll be okay! I’m sure I’ll still be able to procure more cookbooks to share! :P
Me too! I know I shouldn’t judge a book for its pictures, but…gotta admit that it does play a factor!

Sounds like a handy cookbook. I really do need to find more ways to eat better. And I’m sad Blogging for Books is shutting down too…I wonder why.

Me too!
Agreed–I think it could have to do with the fact that electronic books are so much more prevalent(?), but to me, it’s just not the same as the hard copy!
