Durian Ice Cream

I somewhat recently lost overall on a 14-round game of cards, so I had to cook dinner for said players in the game. One of them was/is slightly wary about my cooking ability (or lack thereof) because they’re somewhat under the impression that I can only make things in my rice cooker, so she ended up making food on the side and we had a feast. :O Her boyfriend made me durian ice cream!

If you’ve never heard of durian, I can tell you this: anyone I’ve ever known either loves it or hates it. It is not an aesthetically pleasing fruit (although its exterior would make for an awesome weapon; you could make  a mace with it if you stuck a stick into it). I’m taking this straight from wikipedia because it’s hilarious:

The edible flesh emits a distinctive odor that is strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as pleasantly fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and revolting. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine, raw sewage, and gym socks. The persistence of its odor has led to the fruit’s banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.”

Clearly, I’m from the “deep appreciation” camp, but my entire family resides in the “intense disgust” region and absolutely despises it, and back in the day, my grandma was the only other appreciator, so we’d be banished to the garage to eat it whenever she brought one back from Oakland. We liked sticking them in the freezer first, but fresh is also good. :D

    1. I hope you like it! :]!

  2. I’ve always been curious about durian! I’ve heard that even though the smell can be revolting, the taste is actually quite pleasant. I’m so intrigued! Anything that can be made into ice cream can’t be that bad, right?

    1. Right!? I guess I’m not of the norm in that I’ve always liked durian. :P My entire family hates it though, because they apparently can’t get over the smell. Sigh!
