Welcome to another Travel Tuesday! We’re once again in South Dakota this week (as we still will be for the next couple weeks), but headed off to the Door Trail in Badlands National Park this time!
Door Trail in Badlands National Park
Distance: 0.8+ miles out + back (and an extra 0.5 miles if you choose!)
Elevation: 36 feet
Difficulty: Easy
Admission: $25 for 1 private vehicle (good for 7 days); free with annual park pass ($80)
Parking: Included with admission fee
Trailhead Address: Enter The Door Trail, Interior, SD 57750
I tend to prefer trails that don’t have anyone on em’, and this one’s pretty heavily trafficked, but we got to see two Bighorn Sheep hanging out as a result of people finding em’!
There’s an additional 0.5 miles if you go past the boardwalk. Just follow the numbered posts and you’ll eventually get to the “End of Trail” sign.
Technically, you can keep wandering for a while, but please be careful, as there are sharp rocks and some steep drop offs.
As with all summer hikes, go early to avoid the extreme heat, and remember to bring water and sun protection (a hat + sunscreen)!
- What wildlife have you seen on a hike?
- Do you like more populated trails or less trafficked trails?

I haven’t been to the Badlands, but it’s on my list of places I want to visit!
Ooo, I hope you get to go sometime! :]!
I’m not a hiker by any means, but I feel like I’d like less populated areas too!! Looks like a cool place to visit, and how fun you saw some wildlife!
