DIY Copycat BIG Volumizing Shampoo

It’s probably no small secret that I love and adore LUSH, but it can definitely get dangerous for my wallet. I’m somewhat of a slacker too when it comes to my hair (…aka I get it cut once every 1-2 years)–I’ve kept the same hairstyle for probably the last 15 years because I like how low-maintenance it is.

I received free products in exchange for recipe development; all thoughts + opinions are mine and mine alone!

But there are times where I’d very much love for my hair to have just a tiny bit more volume, and that’s where LUSH’s BIG shampoo came in. At $30 for 11oz., I figured I’d try to make my own after I ran out because times are tough, and I like to save money where I can.

The sea salt helps to de-grease your hair and removes dead skin cells, dirt, etc. without stripping away the natural oils in your hair, and the lemon juice helps to make your hair super shiny!

This recipe isn’t an exact dupe/copycat of LUSH’s Big Shampoo, but I feel like it comes pretty close! A little bit goes a long way and I only use this once a week or so to refresh my hair and give it some shine/bounce. :]

Coconut oil can potentially help to reduce hair breakage and penetrate the hair follicle more effectively. It acts as a great moisturizer to nourish your scalp and hair–nice to know it has its benefits even if you don’t like ingesting it! :P

Barleans gets their coconut oil exclusively from certified-organic plantations in the Philippines where coconut palms are grown naturally without the use of pesticides!

Prep: Yield: ~1 cupTotal:

You'll Need...

Directions

  1. Melt your coconut oil over a candle or in the microwave (~10 seconds) and add in the sea salt and lemon juice.
  2. Add in your choice of shampoo*.
  3. Let sit overnight and check the consistency in the morning. If it's too thick, add more shampoo. If it's too runny, add more coconut oil. If you'd like more salt action, add some more sea salt!

Additional Notes

*I used Renpure's Coconut Water Shampoo. Depending on what base shampoo you use, you may have to play around with the consistency in terms of how much shampoo vs. coconut oil vs. sea salt to add!

*Please keep in mind that the consistency of this can change with the weather, as coconut oil tends to be semi-solid at room temperature and liquid when it’s warm!

  1. I have fine hair so I’m always looking to make it “look” thicker. I would definitely try this – thanks!

    1. Mine is thick but kinda just sits there lifelessly usually and has no volume, so this has been great for perking it up a bit! :P Hope it works for you too!!

  2. Thanks for sharing. I have really thick hair – and it also falls out a lot (random, I know lol) – so that can be annoying to deal with! I like the idea of DIY hair products.

  3. I’ve made lotion, chapstick, and soap (well…technically my husband makes the soap because I’m scared of lye), but I don’t think I’ve tried any hair products. But then, my hair is naturally…poofy. It’s like “I was born in the 80s and that’s where I’m gonna stay.”
