Hooray! I’ve finished all the graded portions of my research course for this semester (aka my capstone presentation)!
We gave our presentations today. I think I was the 5th(?) to go. I couldn’t fall asleep for the longest time last night (this morning), so I was plagued with a whole lot of dilemmas.
- 3 a.m.: I wonder if I should turn on some [soft] music, but reason that the last time this happened, I didn’t hear my alarm, and we can’t have that happen, since this presentation is kinda worth a big chunk (40%) of my grade.
- 3:30 a.m.: I start wondering if sleep disorders are contagious (since one of my housemates is narcoleptic and all of us have cause to believe that our friend [the one I sit next to every day in class out of habit] has some kind of sleep disorder as well).
- 4 a.m.: I wonder if I should just get up and at least do something productive since I’ve just been lying there for the past 3 hours anyway, but then what if I fall asleep during my presentation?!
- 4:30 a.m.: I cave and download a “sleep app” with an auto-off feature and proceed to listen to it while still somewhat wide-awake for another 0.5-1 hours.
I ended up falling asleep at 5-5:30-ish. For 2 hours of sleep, I think I’m functioning wonderfully.
The presentation went well, although there were a couple questions I couldn’t answer, due in part to the fact that these presentations are really on what we will be doing, as opposed to what we’ve done so far. My mentor said she was impressed with my delivery (yay! definitely improving from my fourth grade phobia of public speaking!) and told me I did a great job.
The fire alarm went off during the second half of one of my friend’s presentations, and continued blaring all throughout the rest of the presentations (a good 40 minutes). My ears hurt. It starts at an Eb and scoops to what sounds like a shrill cross between a D/Eb. :[
On a side note, I don’t really want to have to go buy groceries for the rest of this year, since there are 15 days til I leave, so I’m trying to maximize free food opportunities. It is apparently Disabilities Awareness Week, which is wonderful because it means that (1) I get to sit in on lectures pertinent to my research and (2) I get free food out of it.
There was pizza + snacks today that I missed because we got out a little late from our presentations, but there are gourmet subs tomorrow and there’s pizza again on Thursday. Wednesday evening was originally our grand plans for sushi, but they’re doing a free dinner to welcome a new dean…so here are the intense discussions that arose from this:
F: Several things!
1) Good luck to everyone presenting tomorrow and Wednesday!
2) Just in case we didn’t manage to broadcast this to everyone, we were planning on going to Sushi Palace to stuff our faces with sushi on Wednesday after anatomy lab. But! There is apparently a dinner of sorts (check your email :O ) at GSBS at 6 p.m. that day, so do we want to…(a) maximize free food opportunities, or (b) stuff our faces with sushi?
C: I love sushi…but I think I love free food more. I vote we push sushi back. Or just go to sushi afterward anyway.
L: Free food!
T: Cons of sushi: not free
Cons of free food: we don’t know what kind of food they’ll serve
L: If it’s not good, we can always revert back to plan sushi.
