Birthing Cave in Sedona

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! Birthing Cave is a fairly apt name for this place — you’ll understand better when you see the photos for this place. It kindasorta reminded me of the Cave of Munits (or as my friend puts it, the “well woman cave”).

Birthing Cave in Sedona

It’s been a gajillion years since I’ve written, but since I have to use up all my vacation days this year and thus have quite a few days off this month, I guess I can potentially/theoretically use that time to stock up my queue of scheduled posts again!

Elevation: 291 ft

Duration: ~1 hour

The Birthing Cave is a pretty short hike and gives you some amazing views at the very end. We went in mid-afternoon in the summer, which I definitely don’t recommend because it’s super hot, but we were trying to pack as much as we could into the day, so go figure.

The plus side to that = it wasn’t very crowded and we had the cave all to ourselves. The trail isn’t super well marked,  but we managed to find our way.

On the trail split about 0.6 miles into the hike, make sure you go left! (Taking a right will bring you down Long Canyon Trail.)

It’d be awesome to come back here in the early morning when the light hits it just right (and with a real camera…), but we got some beautiful views regardless!

Overall I’d rate this as easy, but the very last bit that gets you up to the cave is the majority (or entirety) of the ascent and can be pretty slippery.

Some tips if you do want to go on this hike!:

  • Bring lots of water.
  • Wear hiking shoes/boots with good traction.
  • Sunscreen + hat are a must! (It’s an exposed trail.)
  • A camera with wide angle lens would be a good idea. It was kinda hard to capture on our phones! :[

It’s so beautiful! Can I hire you as my hiking tour guide if I ever get out west?😉 I actually imagine myself as someone who would go out on my own into nature and hike but I also have the worst sense of direction. I’m worried I would get so lost. I guess I have to make sure to only go on well marked trails?
    Thanks for sharing this!

    1. Aww, I’d love that! Don’t hire me, just lemme know if you come out here and we can go explore all the things! :D!!

Looks like a great hike with awesome views. I’d probably need to avoid mid-day because of the sun (even with sunscreen and hat).

    1. Early morning would probably be best! It’d be awesome to get to watch a sunrise from here! *-*

  1. Thanks for sharing your hiking tips and amazing views! Great that you had the cave pretty much to yourself. I’ll add it to my list!

    1. The upside of hiking when it was at its hottest outside, hahaha. Hope you have fun if you go! :]

  2. Oooh I think I ca see what you mean. I love it when rocks formations or caves have names like that, so you have to visit to see why they got that name.

I hope you had some fabulous days off. I’ll look forward to your next bunch of posts. :)

    1. hahaha, yeppp. (Although it is possibly thought that people came here to give birth too, so it might be a lil of both.)

Thank you!! Hopefully I can do some mix of being productive + also exploring! :D

  6. I love easy hikes like this. I am not a huge hiker so its cool to find hikes that I can do. The views up here are incredible!

    1. I’ve been going on a lot shorter ones lately — they’re definitely a nice break from the long ones!

  7. Sometimes you just need an easy hike! This looks like a beautiful place!

    1. Agreed! This was definitely a nice “break” hike. :]!

  8. Do you know why the cave got the name “birthing cave”? or the history behind it? I’m pinning this for later because I would love to hike this when we visit AZ.
