Welcome to another food-themed Travel Tuesday! I’m gonna be talking about my favorite street food in Hong Kong today! :]
If you’ve ever perused my Recipe FAQ, you might already know that I don’t eat pork or seafood other than fish. People tend to wonder how I’ve survived this long as a Cantonese person with these food restrictions (especially at dim sum restaurants), but I assure you it can be done. :O
P.S. This is why you won’t be finding me recommending pork buns and intestines and the like!
Best Street Food in Hong Kong
Eggettes/Egg Waffles (雞蛋仔/Gai Dan Jai)
This is probably my #1 favorite. <3 These egg waffles have crispy edges with a soft and chewy center, and they come in a variety of different flavors and toppings! The flavors I’ve seen include…original, chocolate, matcha, pandan, matcha mochi, chocolate orange, earl grey, peanut butter with condensed milk, sprinkled with powdered sugar or jam, topped with fruits, bacon, or nutella…
My personal favorites = original, matcha mochi, and with peanut butter + condensed milk (somewhat reminiscent of peanut milk toast but in waffle form!). :]
Average cost is around 17-28 HKD. (~$2-3.50).
Curry Fish Balls (咖哩魚蛋/Gah Lei Yu Dan)
View this post on Instagram
These are super flavorful and are especially delicious when eaten with the sauce it comes in! They’re deep-fried and then boiled in a spicy curry sauce! For an extra kick in flavor, ask them to put the sauce that they use on cheongfun onto it!
Average price of 1 skewer (~6 fish balls): 5-8 HKD (64 cents – $1).
Rice Noodle Roll (腸粉/Cheong Fun)
These are boiled rice noodle rolls mixed with peanut butter and usually topped with a peanut sauce, soy sauce, sesame seeds, and sometimes chili sauce! They’re popular for breakfast but great for any time of the day as a tasty and flavorful snack! Also easy to share, but I doubt you’ll want to share.
Average price: 6-24 HKD (~75 cents – $3)
Egg Tarts (蛋撻/Dan Tat)
These are a dessert with a flaky puff pastry crust and an egg custard filling, best when enjoyed right when they get outta the oven (although do be careful not to burn yourself!). They can be found at a variety of places including bakeries, dim sum restaurants, and with street vendors!
Average price: 3-10 HKD (~38 cents – $1.28)
Tofu Pudding (豆腐花/Dou Fu Fa)
This is a dessert made with tofu (as you may have guessed from the name) that can be enjoyed either cold or hot, and has a smooth + silky texture. In Cantonese, cuisine, it’s often served with a ginger syrup or with black bean paste, and is traditionally made in a wooden bucket!
Average price: 10-20 HKD (~$1.28-2.50)
Dragon’s Beard Candy (银丝糖/Long Soh Tong)
This is kinda like Chinese version of cotton candy and is made from strands of rice flour stretched into super thin strands! It also has sugar, peanuts, coconut and sesame seeds in it. :] The legend of its origin dates back to the Han Dynasty!
Average price: 13-20 HKD (~$1.66-2.50)
Before I got to HK, my parents kept asking me what places I wanted to visit and what I wanted to do while I was there, but pretty much the only thing I kept telling them with certainty was “I want to eat all the things!” (Pretty much all I do in Hong Kong = eat and shop, but mostly eat.) Maybe now you can see why?! :P
- Have you ever heard of/had any of these?
- Which one would you want to try?

Hong Kong is on my short list to visit within the next 2 years. I’ve visited Japan and fell in love with the people and the culture and I have a sneaky feeling that Hong Kong will be the same experience. I’m pretty sure I’m addicted to dim sum. I’ve always wanted to try one of these egg waffles. I can eat 100 of these little beauties. Thanks for sharing.
Yay! I hope you have a ton of fun there! I’ve never been to Japan but it’s definitely on my travel bucket list! :] Hope you find/enjoy all the delicious food everywhere! :D

Oh those waffles!!!!! I have never been to Hong Kong (or anywhere near there LOL). These all look good, and the prices are comparable to the US street food.
I’ve had trouble finding cheap street food around here, but maybe that’d change if I went up to NYC! :o
Those egg waffles look very interesting! We are talking about going to China this summer can’t wait to try all the foods
Ooo, I hope you have a ton of fun! Can’t wait to check out where you’re visiting! :]

Obviously, the next time you travel, I am going to have to invite myself along! You always look like you have so much fun and get to eat so many amazing things!
Those waffles are awesome. There are places around here that are serving them now, with ice cream and other fillings, but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet.
hahaha, come right along! :D! I like packing all the food/outdoorsy things I can into my travels while still trying to keep it relatively inexpensive! :P
I’m glad they’re serving it more elsewhere–it’s nice not having to travel all the way back to HK just to have it! :D
Yum! I love trying new and different foods. Thank you for sharing all of these great pictures and what the food is too… I hope to try a few of these some day!!
I hope you get to also! :]
I want to try the egg tarts. I think the dragon’s beard candy is similar to the honey candy I tasted in Myeongdong, Seoul South Korea.
Here’s our video at Seoul Korea:

Oo, that’s awesome! I’ll have to try it sometime!
I love the egg waffles with peanut butter! But my favorite has to be the mango drink with coconut, not sure if that counts as street food though :)
