Be True To Your Core

Ever since I broke my hand, I’ve been unofficially banned from pretty much all the types of workouts I would usually be enjoying (e.g. powerlifting, pole, Brazilian jiu-jitsu).

I’ve been trying to look on the bright side, but at the same time, I’ve also been pretty bummed because I was finally, finally home and had the opportunity to…

  1. Go back to Twirly Girls.
  2. Take classes with Rhalan Gracie.
  3. Peruse the free gym facilities at my rotations.

I actually had the time to do all of this. *-*

…But then I fell down the stairs and sprained my ankle.

…And of course, broke my hand in jiu-jitsu.

I don’t know when I’ll ever have this kind of free time ever again (especially after residency starts), but such is life! Unplanned events occur and you just gotta learn to roll with the punches! Find joy in the little things and do what makes your soul happy!

It’s kindasorta forced me to get into cardio again, which is, in itself, a silver lining. (Hooray for still being able to work on my core in some way!) Since my cast is finally gone and I’m allowed to sweat again (haha), staying hydrated is important, especially with the rising temperatures and approaching summer (yay!).

I’ve mentioned before how important it is to stay hydrated (e.g. 10 Healthy Living Life Hacks), so what better time than now to share CORE Hydration with you? (Be sure to enter the giveaway!)

disclaimer

Through my partnership with Fit Approach, I got to check out CORE Hydration, a company that makes ultra-purified water that uses a 7-stage process to remove impurities and contaminants from the water. Afterward, it’s balanced with a blend of electrolytes and minerals so that it has the “perfect” (or close to) pH of 7.4!

While I was on my FM rotation, I tried to healthify my diet even more since I couldn’t exercise as much as I would’ve liked to. I also tried to drink more fluids since there wasn’t always time to sit down and eat (or the food would be too complicated for me to eat in a timely manner, so I’d save it for when I got home).

I think you never really realize how much you use your dominant hand (or just both hands in general) until you…can’t. There was a lot of this:

F: Hey, can I ask you a somewhat sad and pathetic question?
(My Resident/Preceptor): I’m sure it’s not pathetic–ask away!
F: (holds up a bottle) Do you think you could open this for me? :'(

I’m usually the one people hand bottles to, so that definitely took some getting used to. Something I loved about getting a box of these CORE Hydration bottles was the fact that I could actually open them on my own!!! (Small victories, you guys.)

Upon that happy discovery, I definitely started bringing these to clinic with me! :D

Aside from incorporating more cardio into my life, I’ve also been trying to go on more hikes (e.g. Mission Peak!), since my legs are (thankfully) still functioning, and dragging along water is a must!

I am the first to admit that I’m not a water connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination. I’m still working on drinking enough water per day (gotta practice what I preach!), but this definitely helps!

The water tastes…for lack of a better word, pure. Clean. I’m not one to normally go out to purchase bottled water because student loans are fun, and I try to keep my grocery budget to about $50/month. (I’m actually going on $0 this month, but that’s a story for another time.)

That being said, I’d happily drink this every day if not for the price tag associated with it! I will likely also be reusing all the bottles afterward because they’re pretty spiffy, and I don’t want to waste em’!

  1. Life is all about learning to adapt, midear. That it is. I buy bottled water if I don’t have my own water bottle, but that is very rarely!
