A Food Tour of Waikiki

In case you didn’t catch my last two Travel Tuesdays, I wrote about how to vacation on the cheap in Oahu and virtually dragged you guys on my hike up the Diamond Head Summit Trail!

As you all probably know by now, I love and adore food, so this week, we’re going on a food tour of Waikiki! Try not to get too hungry. <3

If you’re a fan of acai bowls, my favorite place for that was Tropical Tribe – so much so that I actually went there twice!

I got a Tropical Bowl (blend of acai + guarana berry juice + topped with organic granola, banana, strawberry, blueberry, raw organic honey + bee pollen)…

And a Kama’aina Bowl (blend of acai, apple juice + a variety of fruits + topped with organic granola, banana, strawberry, blueberry + organic honey).

If you’re feeling more like steak or something hot and on the comfort food side of the spectrum, HI Steaks is a great and affordable place! It’s located inside a Food Pantry…

I decided to get the special of the day (Ground Sirloin Steak Curry Bowl) for $6.59! They give you a choice of white or brown rice (no extra cost). :]

So speaking of that Food Pantry, I decided to buy groceries there and spent $29.82 to obtain…

foodpantryfinds

  • 1 strawberry guava pancake mix
  • 1 passionfruit pancake mix
  • 1 futomaki roll (10 pieces)
  • 1 california roll (10 pieces)
  • 2 spam musubi
  • 1 egg salad wrap
  • 1 tuna wrap
  • 1 order of donburi

I’d like to think that’s a pretty good deal for being smack in the middle of very-touristy-Waikiki–the pancake mixes were kinda pricey, but I figured I’d never see those flavors again, so I really wanted to try em’ out!

If you venture over to the King’s Village Farmers Market, they have lots of tasty foods there too–lots of fresh fruits, pineapple juice, sugarcane juice, paella, spring rolls, and lots of other cooked foods + baked goods.

I meant to try the malasadas (they have all sorts of different fillings [e.g. lemon, taro, coconut, peanut butter, chocolate)!) but sadly, never did. Next time!

I did, however, manage to snag a cup of a vegan tapioca dessert made with coconut milk/tapioica and topped with fresh fruit for $2! (They have a bigger version for $4, but I’d just eaten dinner so I was pretty full.)

waikiki

It’s within walking distance of the beach too, so you can enjoy your food with a gorgeous view!

Since poke bowls are my favorite thing in the world, I can’t very well get away with a food tour through part of Hawai’i without introducing you to at least one place. Ahi Bowl and Pot has poke bowls for ~$12 with pretty decent portions (I was full from one bowl!) and a great fish-to-rice ratio!

Another place I’d like to mention is Pa’ina Cafe. It’s probably not considered walking distance if you’re located in the general vicinity of all the other places I listed, but…if you make it over there, I’m fairly certain you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Poke bowls and smoothie bowls are probably my two favorite edible substances ever (I should really just move to Hawai’i), so I wanted to try everything on the menu!

(I ended up getting their shichimi-crusted seared ahi tuna bowl for $10.25!)

If you have a major thing for breakfast food and also have a sweet tooth, I’d suggest going to Cinnamon’s at the ‘Ilikai and getting either the red velvet pancakes or the guava chiffon pancakes. Think of them as more of a dessert and you’ll be fine. (I had the guava pancakes and they’re pretty darn sweet, but super good!)

AYCE (All You Can Eat) Sushi? Go to Kats! <3 This is actually located a little further out (close to Pa’ina Cafe!), but for $25, you can eat all the nigiri and hand rolls you want! :]

If you need a frozen treat to cool off with, I have a couple suggestions…

Pineapple County is a cute little 2-story boutique that sells clothes, bags, jewelry, keepsakes, etc. and by the front of the store, they have all sorts of different sorbets with homemade cookies! I got a small cup of the lilikoi (passionfruit) + pineapple lihing mui (plum powder) sorbet for ~$4.62.

If you want straight-up pineapple sorbet, I can think of no better place than Hawaiian Crown Plantation!

I mean seriously, just look at this! :O!!!

…Also, their baby pineapples are adorable.

But if sorbet isn’t your thing(?!), there are also delicious shaved ice places where you can get yo’ frozen treats on!

Hau Nani Shave Ice is located in a sea of food trucks on 234 Beach Walk (so if you’d like ramen, plate lunches, burgers, grilled foods, mochi ice cream, poke bowls, shrimp, Japanese food, pizza…etc., you might want to make a stop there too! I hope you brought extra stomachs!

…Well, you’d think I’d be done sharing shaved ice places with you, but…I’m not. The last (but definitely not least) place I’d like to recommend is…Waiola Shave Ice! There are several locations, but I chose the one closest to me, which was about a 2-mile walk round-trip. I may or may not have ordered two (one for the road!).

  • Out of all the places I shared, where would you go first? :O
  • If you’ve ever been to Hawai’i, what’s your favorite go-to place to eat?
