5 Ways To Healthify Your Vacation

The Fit Dish link up this week (hosted by Jill Conyers @ JillConyers.com, & Jessica Joy @ TheFitSwitch.org) is…Healthify Your Vacation!

(What vacation?)

I kid, I kid. Kinda.

Technically, I’ll be on vacation for 3 weeks starting on July 11th.

I say “technically” because said vacation is actually going to be spent on lockdown study hibernation til the 31st, and then I get Saturday off as ~*official vacation*~…

…and the day after, I’ll be driving to Pennsylvania for my very first audition rotation.

Yep.

But despite how this sounds, it’s gonna be okay! (A positive outlook is important. and I’m actually really, really excited for that rotation. <3)

If I were to describe my perfect vacation at this point, it’d be a cross-country road trip to try out all the awesome eateries in the country whilst checking out different fitness classes and doing lots of exploring. (Who’s with me?!)

If you haven’t already checked out my 10 Healthy Living Life Hacks, a number of those would also work pretty nicely for this!

Sneak in some movement!

Start your day off with body-weight exercises, and take the stairs whenever possible!

Walk to wherever it is that you’re going, or rent a bike and use that as your transportation! (June is Walk & Bike Month!) Those two were my primary methods of transportation up until…less than 5 years ago, which is when I finally had the time to get my license…and shortly thereafter, moved across the country to (1) a mountainous region with zero sidewalks, and then (2) super-polluted area with very few sidewalks ._.

Try out a class!

Is there anything you’ve always wanted to try? Now’s the time! :O (Or if there’s anything you already like to do, but want to try/continue elsewhere! In my case, I’d be scoping out the different MMA gyms + pole/aerial arts studios. *-*) But if those don’t tickle your fancy, there are so many others to choose from–yoga, boot camps, crossfit, pilates, surfing, ballroom dancing, salsa…go have some fun!

And cooking classes! <3 I’ve never gotten to take one, but they’ve always looked so fun!

Explore!

Check out the local parks and go-to spots in the area that you’re visiting! Are there any trails or must-see areas? (You could combine this with trying out a new class/hanging out outside!)

I’m all sorts of excited for my first audition rotation because, on top of tailoring the rotation to all my interests, they also sent me a list of cool things to do in the area. I’m definitely looking forward to that! <3

Take it outside!

Stand-up paddleboarding (on my bucket list…as is SUP yoga!), kayaking, horseback riding, running on the beach, whitewater rafting, wakeboarding, hiking, zipline obstacle courses, caving, biking…there’s gotta be something out there that tickles your fancy! :O

Relax and have fun!

You’re on vacation! (I’m jealous!) Enjoy it!

First of all, I’m down for the cross-country food trip. Second, meetup.com is a quick way to find out about classes or events with people in areas of your vacation. And third, stand-up paddle boarding is ultra hard (I fell in a lot).

    1. It’d be so much fun! *-*

+ thanks for letting me know about meetup.com! I’m definitely gonna have to check that out!

  1. Haha Farrah, we have a lot of the same tips! Great minds think alike, right? ;) Good luck with your upcoming studycation! You’re so dedicated and focused, girl — you make us all want to step up our game! :)

  6. I’d join that trip! I feel similarly right now (I am not in school or working in June and July because I am studying for the NY Bar Exam at the end of July, but I have to spend my days listening to lectures, making flashcards, writing practice essays…fun fun fun!) But I know afterwards I get to visit my college friends in England in August as a “bar trip” and I’m going hiking in the English Lake District, so I am looking forward :)

  13. Thanks for the tips! It’s really hard to be healthy on vacation, especially when fast food is everywhere along with elevators and escalators. But I am starting to notice most hotels have a nice fitness center

    1. It can definitely be difficult, but there’s a lot that can be done to combat it too! :D I like scouting out restaurants with healthier options + packing healthy snacks with me wherever I go!

  15. so many awesome tips! I had so much fun last summer in Lake Tahoe and we kept things pretty healthy by making our own veggie snacks for the drive, going hiking, and then going kayaking all in the 4 days we spent there. It was amazing and I didn’t have to feel guilty about it!

    1. hahaha, that would definitely do the trick! I lost a couple pounds while looking after 18 kids as a science camp counselor! :P

  17. Oh gosh, it won’t be easy spending wonderful summer days in lockdown study hibernation. I feel for you! Good luck, my friend!! My best travel survival tip is using my body resistance as an exercise tool. I would start a day by doing a few sets of push ups, sits up, squats and lunges in a hotel room. And then end the day with a nice yoga session on a bathroom towel (depending on how much energy I have left at the end of the day, it might even just be only a stretch).

    1. It definitely ain’t fun, but I think the weather’s been trying to convince me that it won’t be so bad after all by thunderstorming every day! (How very kind of it! :P )

Body weight exercises are my favorite when I don’t have any gym equipment! :D! + I really need to stretch more!!

  18. Outside as often as possible is my motto! Vacationing and otherwise. So much great info when we dish the fit! #fitfamlove xoxo

  20. I like the “try a new class” idea. For some reason that is the very reason I want to visit New York again. So many cool fitness classes start there that I want to try… Soul Cycle and AKT in motion to name a couple!

    1. There definitely are! I took an aerial hoop/lyra class in NYC and it was a bunch of fun! (I want one of those and aerial silks…[etc.] for my future house!)

  21. One of my favorite tips for being on a healthy vacation in a new town is I always try to go for a long run to go exploring.
    Great tips!

    1. I feel like I need to take up running again just so I can do that! I’d get to cover more distance than I would if I were walking!

  22. EXPLORING is my # 1 tip for everyone… EXPLORE BY FOOT :) Exercise (any) is important!
