Welcome to another Travel Tuesday! I feel like I’ve been talking about this road trip for ages now, so much so that it’s hard to believe I’m already almost 2 weeks in! I figured I’d put together the 5 useful apps for your next road trip (they were super helpful for planning out mine)!
5 Useful Apps For Your Road Trip
For a little background info, between finishing up the last of residency, working on getting all my job stuff squared away, and preparing to move across the country again, packing/planning for this road trip kinda fell on the back burner. To date, I still have some loose ends to tie up, but it’s nice to have some flexibility!
What I can tell you is this:
- 13 states
- 22 national parks
- 7-8 national forests
- 8-9 national monuments
- 5-6 state parks
I have 4 friends joining me on sections of the trip, and will be staying at a collection of friend’s houses, hostels, Airbnb’s, hotels, and hammock camping my way across the country!
Roadtrippers
Roadtrippers has been instrumental in plotting my road trip path. Since I have the free version, I’m supposed to be limited to seven waypoints only, but I somehow managed to dump in 41 locations onto my map!
It’s not completely accurate to my road trip plans anymore because I kept adding even more destinations, but I do love how it lets you drag and drop your destinations to create the best/most streamlined route. It also lets you add dates and notes to your various destinations, and calculates how many miles you’ll need to drive, distance between locations, as well as likely cost of gas. There’s also guides and a handy search bar for you to find nearby attractions, gas, coffee, things to do, etc.
Truffl
(Updated as of 3/28/21.) This would technically make a total of 6 apps, but if you’d like to be able to put together ginormous itineraries for free, you might enjoy this app over Roadtrippers. You can plan and section off your itinerary however you want + browse others’ trips for inspiration. Feel free to find/add me on there (user name = fairyburger!)
Sheets
I have type A tendencies, so I use this to draw up my itinerary. Planning make my world go round, and this is basically portable Excel. I mapped out most of the potential hikes I wanted to do here as well because it’s kinda nice to have everything in one place!
Waze
My favorite memory of this up was when Morgan Freeman was a GPS voice back in 2016. It made every journey an adventure! I’m super sad that he’s not anymore, but it’s still a really helpful app!
Waze gives you alerts on traffic, hazards, police, and also help you find the cheapest gas along the way, all while helping you to find the fastest route to your destination!
AllTrails
This is super helpful if you like to hike and want to find trails to explore for various different state parks, national parks, and the like. Probably not as helpful if you like to do backcountry hiking, but since this is mostly a solo trip, I will not be doing as much of that in the interest of safety! (I’ve heard Gaia is a good one for that though!)
AllTrails lets you search for trails by…
- Popularity
- Rating
- Distance
- Elevation
- Difficulty
- Things you want to see (e.g. wildlife, waterfalls)
- Things you want to do (e.g. birdwatch, mountain bike, rock climb)
- Suitability for kids/dogs, wheelchair/stroller accessible–you name it!
Trucker Path
As the name suggests this app is actually meant for truckers, but it does have some useful information for if your road tripping. You can customize it to show you where there are gas stations, rest stops (including # of available parking spots), and Walmarts (which typically let you stay overnight in their parking lot if you need to)!
- What’s the last road trip you went on?
- What apps have you found helpful for your road trip?
If you’d like to follow along with me in real time, check out my Instagram + facebook! I also started a road trip tag if you’re interested in reading about all my adventures in more detail but not so much in real time! :P

I hope you’re having a fantastic time! I’ve traveled to places by car, but I’ve never really done an actual road trip. Thanks for sharing the apps – always handy to know. :)

Thank you! :] It’s been a lot of fun so far (I’m a little over a month in–almost halfway? :P )!! :]
I hope they’re helpful for if you ever go on a road trip! I’m sorry I couldn’t visit you in Cincinnati!
Love what you did with the WWII Memorial states. ;-) I haven’t been on an epic road trip in ages. We usually rely on Google Maps and such. I like to listen to Podcasts in the car, so I’d add the Podcast app to the list. ;-)
hehehe, I felt like it fit well! :P I’m sorry I didn’t get to see you, but I feel like I need to go back to DC sometime anyway–there’s so much to see there!
Yay for podcasts! I’ve been listening to some on Spotify!
I love using AllTrails!
It’s an awesome app! :]
When you said the Sheets app I definitely thought you meant the Sheetz app…as in the gas station! Hahah I got excited because Sheetz is my go-to gas station on road trips because they always have clean bathrooms and hot food to snack on :) Anyway, this is a great list and very helpful. I have personally used many of these apps on my roadtrips as well and couldn’t agree more with you!
Sheetz!!! I used to live in WV and was introduced to it by my neighbor but I love em’ too! I’m back in CA now so none anywhere around me, but I did really love their food selection and clean bathrooms!!

I am addicted to sheets for so many things but now I may have to add Truffl! Thanks for the tips. Sounds like a great trip!
Thanks! It was a lot of fun (now looking back on 2020, I wish I’d extended it when I’d had the chance)!

These sound like some great apps for planning a road trip! I especially like the look of Roadtrippers. I wonder if any of them are available for a UK road trip since we’re probably not going to get much further than that this year! Thanks for the really useful resources!
It was definitely super helpful with planning! I think Roadtrippers is available for the UK! (Just tried plotting some points in and a bunch of places along the way showed up! :] )

I use Waze all the time, for life and road trips but haven’t heard of Trails before. Will have to try it out!
It’s such a helpful app in general! AllTrails is the besttttt if you love to hike!
Those are some great app suggestions! We hike a lot so AllTrails is a must for us!

Great app suggestions – I love AllTrails and Roadtrippers! All Trails pro saved me a few times from getting lost on hikes!
They’re awesome! I’m super glad I finally got the pro version of AllTrails — I really wish I’d purchased the lifetime membership though back in the day!
Great tips on which apps to use on a road trip. I’ve got AllTrails and RoadTrippers. Will need to check out your other recommendations.
They’re both so useful! :]

Wow some of these sound pretty useful! Are Roadtrippers and Truffl made only for the US?
I think both can be used outside of the US. Truffl is super super new (out for <2 months) so it's still building a user base right now but as people make more lists/put in more destinations, I think there'll be a lot more to browse through! :]
I never know what apps to use when I go on a road trip, so thank you for sharing all of these – I’ll have to check them out!
Hope you find something that’ll be helpful for you! :]
These are really great apps to use . Definitely will check some out on the next road trip.
Hope you find something that’s helpful for you! :]
AllTrails has been clutch over the last year, as that’s pretty much all we’ve been doing…hiking and exploring the trails we can drive to. Love that you can follow that little blue dot in the app so you don’t get lost!
Agreed! Definitely one of my better purchases last year since we’ve pretty much just been hiking all over the place too. :] I’m now the designated navigator because of this app, hehehe.

As somebody who also has type A tendencies but is extremely indecisive I found this guide so useful! My boyfriend and I are doing a road trip from VA to CO soon and I will definitely need to download these apps to plan it. Thank you for the helpful recommendations!
hehehe, I’m glad you can relate! I have a problem of wanting to visit everyyyyything despite how limited time may be, so the app helps me to be a little more realistic (+ efficient) with planning!
That’s awesome!! I hope you have a fun and safe trip!

It’s going to be the summer of road trips so these are some good apps I need to check out. I’ve been using AllTrails a lot for hiking but haven’t used the others yet
I love AllTrails! I finally bought the pro version and being able to download the maps has been super helpful!
I enjoyed Road Trippers at first because it helped me find a few things I’m not sure I would have otherwise (you know how it gives you things around the area). My biggest issue with it was how it wouldn’t let me (easily) rearrange my trip! But I do agree it’s very useful, especially if you know your plan well! AllTrails is also just the best for trails, lol! I’ll have to check out the other, though because I haven’t used them!
Oh no! The dragging around of different locations worked kindasorta well for me but when it started limiting me to only 7 destinations, I got a little sad, haha. Yay for AllTrails though! <3 It's been awesome for outdoor adventures, especially over the course of this past year too!

Such a cool and useful post, we don’t realize how handy these apps come in at the time of need. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks! :] Definitely hoping for lots of future road trips so I’m sure these’ll come into use again shortly!

I wish I’d known about Roadtrippers when I was planning our honeymoon road trip! I am not great at anything to do with maps, so planning the route was a bit of a challenge. This would have been awesome!
Aww, I’m sorry! It’s hard to know what’s out there (I forgot how I discovered the app but it was purely by chance)!!

These sound like very helpful apps! I might have to try a few of them when I road trip down south in a few months. Thanks for the suggestions! And I completely understand your need to plan everything out, I’m the exact same way!
I hope these help out + that you have a safe + fun trip! :] Planning makes my world go round! :P
