This cold weather sure isn’t agreeing with me. Granted, it’s a full 10 degrees warmer than where I spent my last couple winters up in the mountains of West Virginia, but…I don’t think I was made for the cold. I’m likely going to have to move back to the west coast or to Hawai’i after I graduate from my residency program. ;P
My skin is generally on the drier side, and especially so in the wintertime…so what better time to try making my own lotion!? :] (This would make an awesome and super-easy DIY gift for a loved one too, so win-win!)
As part of the Barleans blogger team, we’re showcasing coconut oil this month! Barleans develops nutritional supplements and their hope is to pave a “Pathway to a Better Life.”
As someone going into Family Medicine with a likely focus in Community Medicine, you know I’m all for companies with great products that also give back!
Some of the orgnizations they donate to include:
- Kidstown International (committed to providing orphaned children with shelter, clothing, education)
- Vitamin Angels (supplying vitamin A to >2.5 million children)
- Compassion International (medical checkups, food + education assistance)
- Engedi Refuge (providing survivors of human trafficking with shelter)
My first encounter with lavender was back when I was 13, when I came across a lavender-scented eye-mask that I got in Tahoe for my mom because it was supposed to be good for stress. I discovered coconut oil back in 2008 when I was learning to cook and figured I’d give it a try because if I didn’t like it in food, it’d still be an awesome moisturizer for my skin/hair. Gotta love dual-purpose products, right!?
This lotion only takes 4 ingredients to make, but if you don’t have jojoba oil or vitamin E oil, you could probably still get away with just the lavender + coconut oil. It won’t have the same consistency but it’ll still be good for your skin–I’ve been using this as a night cream!
4-Ingredient Lavender Coconut Oil Lotion
4-Ingredient Lavender Coconut Oil Lotion
Prep: | Total: |
You'll Need...
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 tbsp vitamin E oil
- 1 tbsp jojoba oil
- 1 tsp lavender essential oil
Directions
- Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container.
Additional Notes
If you want a more whipped texture, add less oil and use a hand mixer to whip the ingredients together to your desired consistency!

- Have you ever tried making your own lotion?
- Do you have a favorite scent? I tend to like smelling like a fruit or something tropical, but I tend to make an exception for lavender! :P

I’ve been meaning to try making a lip scrub! Will let you know if it’s successful! :P
I’ve never made lotion! My little heart just squealed with joy. The winter months also dry my skin out Farrah, it craves lotion this time of year. I have all the ingredients for this recipe!

This sounds perfect!
My favourite scent is vanilla – or coconut. I love anything with either scent – or jasmine! Jesse always laughs that I tend to like scents that smell the most like food but I can’t help it :P

Great minds think alike! I was planning on making something jasmine-flavored next! And totally with you there–things that smell like food are the best! :P
Thanks for sharing! I’ve made some things, or seen them made, at library events near me. I made this face mask once with yogurt and strawberries. I think that was it. It’s runny, but my mom really loved it! I love these type of things though – so thanks for the easy recipe!

This looks fabulous! I love lavender but my husband not so much. I used to put a drop of lavender essential oil on my pillow before bed and that really ticked him off. :) Whoops.
