Peanut Milk Toast

Welcome to Foodie FridayI’ll be linking up with Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama + Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl–this week’s theme = Multicolored Salad!

I kinda mixed up the themes in my head so officially, I have a toast recipe for you. This recipe was first published back on 9/20/11, but I figured it deserved a revamp!

I do have a quick n’ dirty recipe for a multicolored salad though! (I don’t have a good photo though, hence why it’s not today’s recipe.)

  • 1 cucumber, chopped
  • 2 Roma tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 avocado, diced
  • ~1 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • sea salt, to taste
  • ~1 tbsp blood orange olive oil

Put all of the above in a bowl and toss until combined, then serve!

But back to the matter at hand–Peanut Milk Toast!

Some of my favorite eateries in Hong Kong are the 茶餐廳 (literal translation is “tea restaurant”), where they offer a sort of fusion of Hong Kong and Western-style foods.

Wayyy back in the day, restaurants that served “Western” foods were considered super high end, and weren’t affordable for locals, but after World War II, HK was influenced by British culture, so 茶餐廳’s started popping up left and right so as to offer locals the opportunity to enjoy Western food as well!

They were made super affordable (yay for cheap Western food!), and even today, that’s pretty much the case! You can pretty much stuff your face on just $3 USD and possibly still have leftovers for a later meal.

Pretty awesome in my book. :O

It’s sad that because of the skyrocketing rent in HK (I think of Hong Kong as the Chinese NYC), a ton of 茶餐廳’s have closed down and have been replaced by chain restaurants (e.g. Café de Coral [大家樂], Fairwood [大快活], and Maxim’s [美心食品有限公司]). I still like em’, but I do miss the hole-in-wall 茶餐廳’s!

There are several in the bay area as well, and one of my favorite snacks on the menu is Peanut Milk Toast! Unfortunately, it’s ~$2.50-3 to order, so I figured I was better off making it at home.

It takes all of 5 minutes (if even that) to make, so if you want to change up your usual PB&J, give this a try!

This is my recreation of the Peanut Milk Toast I had at Cousin Cafe in Newark! (You can probably find it at any HK-style cafe though!) Although it isn’t the healthiest of snacks, I healthified it by using whole wheat bread + natural peanut butter and not buttering it up!

Yield: 4 slices

A 3-ingredient recipe for a popular Hong Kong-style snack that's often found in tea restaurants!

You'll Need...

  • 4 slices whole wheat bread
  • 4 tbsp natural peanut butter
  • drizzle sweetened condensed milk (to taste)

Directions

  1. Toast the slices of bread.
  2. Spread peanut butter on one side of toast, and driizzle with sweetened condensed milk!

Additional Notes

If you want the more indulgent + legit version, heat up a medium skillet on medium-low heat, then spread some butter on one side of the toast and let it hang out in the skillet for a bit. Then spread the peanut butter on, and drizzle with sweetened condensed milk!

This last picture was from one of the first times I ever made this HK-style toast! (Roughly back in 2007!)

My college roommate (aka facebook spouse, aka one of my best friends) and I were craving it sometime during second year, so we decided to make it back then, and it was glorious. <3

I like to think my food photography has improved immensely since then, yes yes? :D?

  5. I LOLed so hard at your “I think my photo skills are better now” remark because nailing food photos is rough and you always do a good job!

    1. hahaha, I try! ;P They used to be prettyyyy terrible though.

      Yes indeed! :D!

  6. Tea houses sound wonderful. I’m a bit remiss that I didn’t make it to one (or know that I should!) when I visited Hong Kong. Clearly I’ll have to make this toast to make up for it — it’s happening — next time I crack open a can of condensed milk!

  12. When I made my iced coffee yesterday, I was looking at recipes and a lot of them use sweetened condensed milk. I remember having thai iced coffee and that was the sweetener. Interesting that it is drizzled on this toast!

    1. Yes indeed! I’ve been meaning to make Thai iced tea again sometime–maybe I’ll have it with this! :P

  13. What an interesting twist on a staple! I love just plain buttered toast. I’m not a huge peanut butter fan (unless it comes with a Reese’s wrapper LOL), but I do like it on a rice cake. This variation sounds good…I might have to give it a whirl ;-)

    1. Haha, I’m so with you on Reeses! *-* I hope you like it if you get a chance to try it out! :]!

  14. Ooooh, what a cool way to use condensed milk. I bet my kids would love having this as a snack!

I got the olive oil during a trip to Vermont where I was checking out this olive oil store (Saratoga Olive Oil – https://www.saratogaoliveoil.com/fused-whole-fruit-blood-orange-olive-oil)! :]
