Honey Matcha Toast

Welcome to Foodie Friday! I’m linking up with Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama, Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl + Jess from Hello To Fit to create awesome healthy recipes each week! This week’s theme = Regional Foods!

This week has been infinitely better than last week because there were no broken bones/towed cars, nor was there a need to sleep in my car. Also…

TODAY’S THE DAY!!! (Match Day, that is.) Sadly, this post is going up many hours before I actually find out where I’m going, but I can at least tell you that I’m goin’ somewhere!!

I’ll let you know where I’m spending my next 3 years this Monday (just in time for Medical Mondays!), but if you can’t wait til then to find out, you can probably find out on my twitter if it’s after 10 a.m. PST!

Have you ever had matcha? Since I hail from the bay area, I’ve been super-spoiled in the realms of food diversity, and never actually even realized that I was a minority until I took an Asian-American Studies course when I started college at Davis. I never “was” a minority til I moved to West Virginia for medical school. (My high school was 80% Asian and college was maybe 40-50%?)

One of our most frequent hangouts/haunts was at tea places–there were a ton in our area, so we’d often pick one to convene at, and we’ve kinda carried this tradition onward through college and post-college meet-ups. I actually get to participate in said monthly tea hangouts because I’m [finally] back in the area again (for the time being)!

Depending on where I end up for residency, my days are possibly somewhat numbered (here’s how I made my rank list! ;) ), but I’ll take what I can get. You learn to cherish every moment even more when you know that they’re limited!

In any case, said tea places often have thick toast (can be found in Asian bakeries/supermarkets) in a variety of different flavors

  • Garlic (similar to garlic bread)
  • Custard (similar to “pineapple buns” at Asian bakeries, but in toast form)
  • Peanut butter (self-explanatory)
  • Green tea/matcha toast (my personal favorite!)

…We decided to recreate it in a healthier manner! :]

The toast that I got wasn’t quite as thick as I’d hoped, but it still turned out really tasty anyway!

You can top this off with healthified Matcha Ice Cream and diced fruits + a sprig of mint, if you’d like to get all fancy! We were a little too full since we’d made 5 other things by this point, but it would be super tasty! :P

Honey Matcha Toast

Honey Matcha Toast

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices Asian toast (thick toast! – can be found at Asian bakeries/supermarkets!)
  • 1 tbsp honey (or 1 good healthy squeeze)
  • ½ tsp matcha , + more for dusting
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter and combine with honey and matcha.
  2. Brush the tops and sides of each slice of bread with the mixture. (For more surface area, you can cut crosses into each slice of bread to let the mixture seep in.)
  3. Toast on a skillet until golden brown.
  4. Top with matcha ice cream (if desired), and dust with more matcha powder!

  6. I LOVE Matcha, but I’ve never thought to have it on toast. It makes perfect sense though because matcha-and-honey tea is my personal favourite.

Toast with honey is my go to when I’m feeling less-than (sick, sad, grumpy) I may need to add some matcha to that list!

I’m about 3 hours ahead of you time wise, but i’ll be checking your twitter this afternoon for Match updates! (Match? Matcha? Coincidence?)

    1. Toast is an awesome comfort food! I usually have tea and some kind of hot food when I’m sick, sad and/or grumpy! I hope you like it if you try it out!

Haha, it was a very fitting coincidence! I didn’t even realize it until I posted! :P

  7. I have never tried matcha. It probably has nothing to do with the fishing town I currently live in now. I can’t find anything within a 40 mile radius. :( Gosh, do I miss Trader Joe’s and other fresh markets.

    1. I feel your pain! I used to live in the middle of nowhere, and trying to find the more unique items was always almost impossible! I’d usually have to wait til I went home-home to get it. X_x

  8. I have never had matcha, but would like to try it! This toast looks delicious and easy!

  9. Definitely going to try this when I get back home for my youngest and I. She had a strawberry cream frapp with matcha powder on top and loved the matcha powder. I have a lot to use up as I haven’t been using it as much and got a large quantity of it so this would be the perfect way to switch things up and use it.
Thank you for hosting, happy Foodie Friday!

  12. Ooh, I’ve never had Asian toast. Actually, I might have had it in Japan. How would say it differs from American bread?

    1. I feel like it’s a softer and fluffier bread, and tends to be thicker than American bread! Might sometimes also be called milk toast(?)!

  13. The moment I read, “top with matcha ice cream” my heart swelled and I was S-O-L-D! Sounds very tasty,as usual! Thanks for another good Foodie Friday!

      Thank you!! <3

  17. I’ve heard of matcha but I’ve never gotten the chance to try it. What does it taste like? Or does it have a unique taste?

    1. I’m kinda terrible at describing taste, but it has an initially slightly bitter sort of taste followed by a little sweetness, and at the same time, smells/taste like green tea? :D? I think it’s a pretty unique taste!

  18. Can you believe that I still haven’t had matcha?? Looks good!! Now…on to read your post about Match Day!!

    1. What what!? One o’ these days, you gotta try it! :P

  19. That toast plus matcha ice cream??? *brain explodes* that sounds amazing. Great great idea!!!

    1. Thanks so much, Danielle! :D
