Diamond Head Summit Trail

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! This is the first of a wholeee ton of posts on Hawai’i (more specifically, on the island of Oahu)–we’re visiting the Diamond Head Summit Trail first!

I got to my Airbnb (yay for vacationing on the cheap!) by around noon and decided to have some shaved ice before going on my first hike! Hau Nani Shave Ice was less than a mile from where I was staying, so I opted for the Strawberry Lychee. <3

Then I found a bus to take to Diamond Head State Park! I was still figuring out the bus system and left the bus a few stops too soon (at the Kapi’olani Community College…), so I just walked a bit more than I meant to.

Distance: ~1.6 miles out-and-back trail
Elevation: 560′
Trailhead Location: Off Diamond Head Road between Makapu’u Avenue and 18th Avenue, Honolulu
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Parking: Usually fairly ample (I walked, so this wasn’t relevant for me :P ). As the sign suggests, admission fee/parking is $5 for a private vehicle and $1 for walk-ins.

If you’re walking, you have to go through the tunnel to get there! It takes about 1-2 hours to get to the top depending on fitness level + how long you linger up there!diamondheadtunnel1

The trail starts off paved, but quickly turns into “tuff,” which is what the cemented-together ash + rock from the eruption 300k years ago is called!

There are a hell of a lot of stairs, and the last tenth of a mile is entirely composed of rather steep flight of em’, so make sure you wear good walking shoes, and if you’re afraid of heights, maybe don’t look behind you during your ascent!diamondheadsummittrail2

I actually thought I’d hiked up this somewhere in my past (the last time I went to Hawai’i was back in 2003), but after seeing those stairs, I know there’s no way I ever did because I was with my family at the time and my mom does not do stairs like those.

The view from up top is absolutely gorgeous, and definitely well worth the trip!

There are 2-3 rescues on this trail every week for all kinds of different reasons (dehydration, vertigo, exhaustion, claustrophobia, broken ankle, heart attack…), so use your common sense, don’t attempt anything crazy up there, and know your limits.

At the summit, you’ll be able to see the bunkers on the crater rim as well as a lighthouse! :]

On a clear day, you can see all the way from Koko Head to Wai’anae! :]

For the record, there isn’t much shade on this trail at all (other than whilst climbing the stairs and in the tunnel), so make sure you bring a hat, sunglasses, water, and apply ample amounts of sunscreen!

The trail is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last entrance is at 4:30 p.m., and the gates lock at 6 p.m., so please try not to get stuck there.

If you don’t feel like you got enough of a workout by the time you get back down, you’re in luck! The Bryan Clay Exercise Park is located on the exterior slope of Diamond Head; it’s named after an Olympic decathlon gold medalist from Hawai’i! Just don’t burn yourself on the equipment!

I had a celebratory meal at Pa’ina Cafe afterward and got a Shichimi-Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna Bowl! <3

  • Have you ever hiked up Diamond Head? …Or ever thought you’d been on a hike somewhere in your past and then realized you hadn’t?
  • What would you have for a celebratory meal?

  1. oh wow what a view!! Well worth those steps :) I did similar crazy steps in quebec city…….my thighs felt it for the next few days!! :)

I have never hiked Diamond Head, nor have I been to Hawaii. Both are a must for me!

as for a celebratory meal? I think it would depend WHERE i am at…..that poke bowl does look amazing

    1. It was definitely worth those steps! :] I hope you get to go to Hawaii sometime! I kinda want to move there, so if I do end up ever doing that, comeeee visit! :P

I really want another one! *-*

  2. Fantastic views, but damn….those look like the stairs of death :O Scary!

    1. haha, I didn’t realize there’d be so many steps until I actually got to them, but they [thankfully] weren’t too bad! Definitely worth it for the view. :]

  3. How much fun! I did this on my first trip to Hawaii and those steps were a little steep at the end there. The views are totally worth it though. Gorgeous. Can’t wait to read more about your trip.

    1. hehe, definitely agreed! <3! My next one is on a food tour through all the places I walked through in Waikiki! :P

  4. 1.6 miles there and back sounds like a good distance for me :P I’m a lame hiker and have never gone more than 4 miles round trip hehehe.

    1. hahaha, this one would be perfect for you then! :] There was a spot where people were doing yoga out on this almost-platform-lookin’ thing! I wanted to go out there and strike a pose, but with the whole traveling alone thing, there wouldn’t have been anyone to take a picture anyway, hehe.

  5. What a rewarding hike!!! So much EYE PORN!!

    1. For reals! <3!

  6. That shaved ice looks so delicious and that trail looks incredible!!! Though, you totally should have finished it with more shaved ice… you know… to cool down?

    1. hahaha, I should’ve done that (and honestly almost did), but the poke bowl was calling to me more! :O

  7. Wow….those views are breath taking! Looks like you had a great hike!

    1. It definitely was! <3

  8. Gorgeous! Loved “hiking” along with you!

    1. Thanks for virtually coming along! :P

  9. Those stairs look scary and challenging and something I would love to tackle. Hawaii is breathtaking sadly I’ve never been hiking, I went during my college years and I was more interested in dancing and eating than hiking and exploring. It’s crazy how much your priorities change as you get older. You got some beautiful shots Farrah.

    1. Aww, darn! I hope you get to go sometime! :]!! It’s so pretty there!

I wish I hadn’t hated on dancing when I was little–I like to think I’d be a lot better now, but oh well. Better late than never!

  10. I remember hiking Diamond Head when I was in Hawaii right before senior year–and I remember there being a ton of stairs! But very doable.

    1. Agreed! (And it was so worth it! :] )

  11. Oh gosh, I’m tired just looking at those stairs! Going up stairs or uphill in general is really difficult for me, so I’m not sure I could ever really do a hike. I’d much rather walk straight for a longer time. haha Maybe if I got super fit or something! That is a beautiful view though, so it’s great you were able to make it and really enjoy yourself!

And mm…that shaved ice in the beginning is so yummy looking.

    1. Stairs tend to kick hikes up a notch, but there are definitely lots of really flat hikes out there that are really pretty too!

I’m glad I made it up there too–the view was so worth it! <3
