Day In The Life: Nutrition

…Can I just say how much I loved and adored my nutrition rotation!? I wanted to set up a rotation in nutrition because I probably got about…one lecture on it in med school.

Yes, seriously. One.

Sure, there were bits and pieces scattered every here and there between blocks, but if I want to go into family medicine and one of my main focuses = preventative health, I figured learning more about how to counsel my patients on healthy eating habits would be a good idea.

So who better to learn it from than a dietitian? :]!

Overall, it was a laidback and super informative rotation–I’m very tempted to use my last 2 weeks of electives to do another one, since this one was so short (on account of Thanksgiving + my dietitian going out of town).

Day in the Life: Nutrition

Day in the Life: Nutrition

A Typical Day

I worked with a clinical dietitian in Huntington who focuses on functional medicine, does nutrition workshops + community/corporate lectures, and teaches yoga on the side at a local studio! Here’s a blog post she wrote on emotional eating!

It was a lot of fun, and helped me to incorporate a whole lot of concepts I’d had floating in my head (thanks to The Recipe ReDux and all the healthy living blogs I follow!) into practice. The only downside was that all that talk about food and recipe ideas tended to get me super hungry. ;_;

I already try to eat fairly healthily as it is (especially when I have too much going on to make time to work out), but all that we discussed throughout each day did influence me to make healthier food choices too!

She followed an “all foods can fit, but food is medicine, so you want to prioritize and eat as much whole, unprocessed foods as possible” philosophy, and emphasized the importance of having nutrient-dense + balanced meals with the plate method:

  • Start with protein (~25% of the plate).
  • Add fruits + non-starchy vegetables–aka pretty much any veggie other than corn, potatoes, peas (~50% of plate).
  • Starches, healthy fats, whole grains, etc. fit into the last 25% of the plate.

Day in the Life: Nutrition

A typical day would start at around 8:15 in the morning, and I’d sit in on her Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) sessions with patients.

I liked that she got to spend so much more time talking with each patient (I think in the future, I’ll get ~15 minutes vs. an hour), and it was so nice to see people who were motivated to make healthy changes in their diet and lifestyle! :] (Granted, there were definitely varying levels of compliance + motivation, but still, it was uplifting. :D )

She was awesome with her patients–super engaging, understanding and encouraging, but also able to lay down some tough love she deemed it necessary.

I got to write all the notes! They’re somewhat similar to the SOAP notes I’m used to, but instead of Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan, it went by ADIM:

  • Assessment
  • Diagnosis
  • Intervention
  • Monitoring

I’d calculate each patient’s total energy expenditure (TEE) with the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation, and was also given resources galore, so hopefully when things in my life calm down a bit (aka after interviews/traveling/possibly the match), I’ll be able to share more of the things I learned in future posts! :]

We’d break for lunch from 12-1, and resume again til anywhere between 3-5 p.m., depending on the day. Then I’d run off to do back-to-back fitness classes (group fitness with my friend at the hospital gym followed by BJJ at PCMAA) in the evening.

Meals

Lunch was free every day in the education room! :D

Day in the Life: Nutrition

Parking

Free! I was encouraged to park further away from the entrance so that (a) patients could get the closer spots + (b) get more steps/activity in.

Housing

I bummed on my friend’s couch again for the duration of this rotation! (Same place where I lived whilst on my Anesthesiology rotation!) It was so nice to see a familiar face again! :]

Check out my other Day In The Life posts, and I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving week! :]

    1. Agreed! I wish it was, but I guess they figured since dietitians existed and there were so many other things to learn, they chose this one to skimp on. :[!

  3. That sounds like a great rotation, sorry to hear it was cut short! As a Kinesiology grad, we were able to take plenty of electives in Nutrition and it’s SUCH an important part of an overall healthy, active lifestyle. Love that you took it upon yourself to be educated on the subject!

    Happy Thanksgiving to you!

I may try to do another nutrition rotation again later on this year just to make up for it! :P I studied Exercise Biology in undergrad and took some Kinesiology classes after I graduated–I loved em’! :] I wish I’d had the chance to take more!

Happy holidays to you as well! :]

  8. I think I would love a nutrition rotation! We actually are currently in a nutrition segment of one of our dental classes and the professor teaching it is so unknowledgeable it baffles me. Plus she hated on gluten free & vegan people which was not cool in my book lol. I think it is so important to educate yourself & others on health so I find it so awesome that you got to do this!

    1. I’m sorry to hear that! It always makes me so sad when super un-open-minded people preach their own beliefs as the information/”facts” that you’re supposed to know. :[ I definitely agree with you that it’s important to educate ourselves + others on health–I’m super glad I got to do this too! I’m hoping I can compile all the stuff I learned into several different posts next year! :]

  9. How do you like hospital food? Tasty?

    1. I wasn’t at the hospital for this rotation, but when I’m at the hospital, I tend to bring my own lunches or eat in the physicians’ lounge. The food isn’t bad! I usually just go for steamed veggies and whatever protein they have that I can eat! :O

  10. Nutrition sounds so fun! I’d love to learn more about it! The food you ate looks so yummy too!! <3

    1. Thanks, Dandi! :]

  11. I absolutely LOVED the nutrition course I took in college…so informative. It’s fun afterwards to put your plates together and know what each food is contributing / doing for your body!

  12. I had no idea one could do a nutrition rotation!! Great opportunity to learn and practice what you will maybe preach in the future :)

    1. It was a lot of fun! Thanks for stopping by! :]

  13. This salad looks delish. I am totally saving this recipe as I never seem to know how to make a good salad.

    1. hehe, I need to figure out the recipes for the dressings they had!

  14. Sounds really interesting! I can’t wait to hear more when you have time to catch your breath.

  15. This sounds like an awesome rotation and I think it’s great because most doctors know so little about nutrition! Plus it sounds great as far as balance goes since you were able to get workouts in and also stay with a friend while it was going on.

    1. I know, right? :[ It makes me sad that I barely learned anything on nutrition in med school, but super glad that I got to do this rotation! :D I was super happy about having time to work out again! :]

  16. I 100% can relate to the ZERO nutrition knowledge that most physicians lack/it’s not offered in med school so kuddos to you for seeking it out on your own! As an almost dietitian it’s definitely frustrating when doctors don’t know what they’re talking about and then clients come to us more confused than ever, so I’m SO happy to hear you had the option of a dietetics rotation…because food 100% is medicine!!

    1. It makes me so sad that it’s not! One of her patients mentioned something along the lines of, “My doctor knows all these things about nutrition too; I’m not sure why he sent me here.” I explained the reason for my presence and he was really surprised. I completely agree that food is medicine, and I’m super happy that I got a chance to do this rotation too! :]
