…This is exactly what it sounds like. Part of Day 3 of my Redwoods Car Camping trip involved visiting the Big Tree Area! (Check out Day 1’s 8-mile hike along the Hidden Beach section of the Coastal Trail, and Day 2’s 12-mile hike through Miner’s Ridge + James Irvine Loop!)
The Big Tree Area is one of the groves in the Humboldt Redwoods, and contains the Giant Tree, which has been recognized by the American Forestry Association as the National Champion Coast Redwood. It’s a pretty big deal tree.
The tree is located in the park’s Rockefeller Forest, which is the world’s largest stand of old growth redwoods (10,000 acres!)!
Distance: 0.6 miles
Elevation: 10 feet
Trailhead Location:
Difficulty: Easy
Parking: Big Tree Day Use Area parking lot
Go from Mattole Road 4 miles from where it begins at the Avenue of the Giants. There should be a Big Tree Day Use Area with a paved road that goes toward the left.
There’s a footbridge in the summer, so cross that and turn left.
I have lots of answers to random interview questions. For instance, if someone were to ask me what type of tree I’d be, I’d choose redwoods. They have tannins (which are also found in teas, and I like tea?) that help to protect them against fire, insects, and bacteria. (I like to think that I’m pretty durable and can keep chugging along despite meeting challenges and the like.
After you reach the Giant Tree, follow the trail to where it becomes the Bull Creek Flats Trail and turn right. The redwood grove there is absolutely gorgeous, and if you ever wanted to feel short, that’s really the perfect place. ;P
When you reach the “intersection,” turn right and follow the trail to head back to the parking lot!
- If you were a tree, what type of tree would you be?

O my gosh! Haha! We actually had to do a “tree” project in like 3rd? or 2nd grade. We chose any tree by our home, and “researched it”! I chose this big one in my yard for my project :P
That’s so cool! :D! I don’t think we did anything like that (that I can remember)–we had a bug or leaf project in biology in high school though? Kindasorta close!?

This is awesome Farrah, I live super close to Muir Woods, they have a few super sized trees but I’m positive this tree is bigger. If I was a tree I would be a Maple Tree, so people could steal my sweet sap.

That’s so cool! Muir Woods is a gorgeous place!
And ah, maple trees are awesome! <3 Great choice!

Das a giant tree.
I suppose I’d rather be Oak. After all, he did introduce us to Pokemon. But then again, Sycamore introduced us to Mega-Evolutions…
Isn’t it!? :O
Oak is pretty awesome! That’s what I made most of my projects out of back in woodworking class! :P I’m too out of the loop to know about Sycamore. sosad….

this looks like SUCH a blast! If I was a tree, I would love to be a big willow tree or a cherry blossom or something :) so cool! I still need to go see the Redwoods. xx
Those are gorgeous tree picks! :D! I hope you get to go up there sometime!

This reminds me of the big redwood that fell down in California recently – the one where you could drive through the tree? So sad! These trees have seen so much and it boggles my mind. When we visited Muir Woods in CA it was simply magical.

That made me so sad!! :[ (We drove through that during this trip! I didn’t take a picture though since I was…in the car. ._. )
I’m glad you got to visit Muir Woods while you were out in CA! :D!!

I’ve been to Muir Woods, but I need to go here!
I was bummed to hear the drive thru tree fell over the weekend, I never did make it to Redwoods NP to see that before it happened.
Those tree’s are just so amazingly large, it’s just beautiful to see! Love all your pictures!!!

Trees are UNDER-RATED and they totally shouldn’t be!!! They are insanely useful and can be GINORMOUS as you have found out at this hiking area!! HOT DAMN!

I agree! They help keep the planet alive! <3

I work in the outdoors industry and I don’t think I’ve ever thought about what kind of tree I would be! I think I would be an American Chestnut tree. Even though they don’t get as big as they used to, they’re survivors. Even with the blight affecting them, there are still mature trees that fruit every year and are evolving to fight the fungus that’s killing the species. They’re tough old trees!
hehehe, I think I just ponder weird questions in my mind. I’ve asked friends/acquaintances what vegetable they think they’re most similar to. If anything, it sparks a conversation. ;P I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an American Chestnut tree, but they do sound awesome!

If I was a tree… hmmmm! Well, I’d like to think I was a willow tree – I might bend in hard and challenging situations but I won’t break ;)
This looks like such an awesome place to explore!

Well they really weren’t lying when they said “big tree”, were they! I think if I were a tree I’d be something kind of short and not too impressive in size…maybe an apple blossom tree…haha!

hahaha, they definitely weren’t! :P Apple blossom trees are awesome! Apples are one of my favorite fruits! :D
I have no idea what tree I’d be, as I’m not really familiar with many of them. Thanks for sharing though! :) Always fun posts.
