Best Restaurants In Town

I’m linking up with “Tell Me About Your Town,” and thought it’d be fun to join in and make my own “blating profile” (“blog” + “dating” ) because this one was super cute! It also gives me a chance to share my favorite places to eat from the different places I’ve lived in! (For the record, I have many other favorites, but limited this strictly to towns I’ve actually lived in.)

In the past 8 years, I’ve lived in 6 towns/cities, 8 places, and 4 different states (just you wait until the latter half of this year–there’s no telling where I’ll be!), so I’ll be introducing you to a whole lot of different places across the country, namely, California, New Jersey, West Virginia & Kentucky. :]

Fairyburger's Blating Profile

Might I also mention that I’ve reviewed almost 400 places and have been a Yelp Elite since 2009? :O Thanks to all the moving around though, I still haven’t ever been able to go to a single Yelp Elite event! :'( (Someday!!!)

So here we go!

Fremont, CA

  • Shalimar / Pakwan
We have a billion places with awesome Indian food in Fremont, but these two are my favorites! Shalimar is a little more dark and shady-lookin’, but it’s the first one I discovered and converted my family into loving, so it holds a special place in my heart. Pakwan is more brightly lit and maybe a dollar more expensive (if even) per dish, but you can’t go wrong with the food at either of em’! <3 Added bonus: both of them have free masala chai tea! :D There are plenty of vegetarian options, and also all sorts of meat dishes. And I love that fluffy naan! <3
  • Le Moose Crepe Cafe
I love crepes, and this has an awesome mix of savory or sweet crepes…and even if you don’t like crepes, you can get noodles, pasta or Thai food, so…something for everyone! :D I usually go for the savory ones, although once in a while, I can’t say no to a dessert crepe!

    Spicy Peanut Chicken Curry Crepe

    Spicy Peanut Chicken Curry Crepe!

  • Bob Sang Korean BBQ & Tofu
This is my favorite all-you-can-eat (AYCE) Korean BBQ place in the bay area. <3 When they first started, they actually used to let us take the leftovers at our table home(!), but asswipes (‘scuse my language) started exploiting that and they had to stop. The CA drought has unfortunately also caused prices to increase, but their food is super good, and they don’t ever give you crap about a single person eating enough to feed a small family, which I really appreciate. :O
    bobsang
  • New Yong Kang
My parents are avid fans of Chinese food, and this place makes pretty good food! We have followed this restaurant since it was just “Yong Kang” back when we lived on the other side of Fremont. They moved to the other side of town shortly after we did, so my parents were pretty happy about it! Super affordable ($21 for 3 dishes + a soup) and great for if you want to have leftovers for later meals! My favorites here are the…Beef Stew Clay Pot, Salt and Pepper Rock Cod, String Beans with Ground Pork (…I pick out the pork), Pineapple Fried Rice, and XO Beef.

Davis, CA

  • Davis Sushi Buffet & Jusco!
I love sushi. If there were a such thing as a proposal food, salmon sashimi would be where it’s at. :O You can sit by the boats and pick the dishes you want at Davis Sushi Buffet, or also order stuff from the kitchen. At Jusco, you mark off what you want and they’ll just keep bringing you stuff until you stop ordering. (I liked it there because the menu stated what was in each roll, so I didn’t have to keep asking!) On your birthday, it is free for you if you come with 1-3 paying adults (depending on which one you go to), which may be why they started randomly closing up shop on my birthday. ._.

I definitely wouldn't say no to this sashimi salad though. >_>

I definitely wouldn’t say no to this sashimi salad though. >_>

    davissushibuffet

This is the usual aftermath. Of one person.

This wasn’t taken at Davis Sushi Buffet or Jusco, but I just wanted to illustrate that this is the usual aftermath…of one person.

I got to celebrate one birthday at Jusco (it decided to randomly close on my birthday the following year :'( ).

I got to celebrate one birthday at Jusco (it decided to randomly close on my birthday the following year :'( )!

  • Sophia’s Thai Kitchen
Thai food is my other favorite cuisine, and Davis had/has a billion of them. (I think they still have 10-14?) This one holds fond memories though, and the food is delicious! I love the bottomless Thai iced tea here (my record thus far is 8 glasses, I think, and last I heard, the restaurant record was 14), and the curry is awesome.
  • Pluto’s Fresh Food
This was one of my favorite places to get a quick, healthy, customizable meal. I’d build my own salad (a “main” salad–none of this side salad nonsense, because it wasn’t worth the bang for my buck) and pile on the fixings (yay for the seasonal fruits!), but if you’re not in the mood for a salad, they also have sandwiches and desserts!
  • Kathmandu Kitchen
Want more super flavorful Indian food? :D Go here! They have a lunch buffet at lunch where you can stuff your face if you’re feeling especially hungry. I really like their Chicken Tikka Masala. :] (They also had a super good appetizer that I currently cannot recall the name of, because it’s been a good…7…years; my, how time flies.)

New Brunswick, NJ

  • Soupervan
I’ve mentioned Soupervan before in many an old post, and this food truck may well be my favorite eatery on the planet, but I don’t think they’re currently in operation. ;_; They made super delicious, healthy wraps, sandwiches and soups from using local ingredients and for each meal purchased, they’d donate one to the local soup kitchen. <3

This is their “Hungry Bunny” wrap!

I loved their cannolis and also their Apple Nachos! This week’s Foodie Friday theme is “Copycat Recipes,” so be sure to stop by and check out how to make this lovely goodness!

    Apple Nachos

    (Here’s a sneak preview! <3)

Lewisburg, WV

  • Fujiyama
They make me miss home a little bit less, because I can at least get my sushi fix from somewhere! Krishna (one of the staff there) dreams up all sorts of awesome yumminess, and it’s wonderful. :] I’ve tried to recreate their Curry Fried Rice, but can’t get the flavoring right just yet. My favorites are the Paradise Roll (yay for avocado, tuna + salmon topped with more salmon!) and the Spence / Awesome Roll (mango, avocado, tuna, sriracha), and I also love their cauldron of Miso Dumpling Soup! Sadly, I mysteriously do not have pictures of their Paradise Roll, but here’s the Spence/Awesome Roll + their Valentine Roll!
    awesomeroll
    valentineroll
  • Stardust Cafe
I love farm-to-table restaurants, and although this place is a little pricey, I love the food there. <3 My friends and I made a stop there after one of our school-related activities (Early Clinical Encounters) and inhaled a bunch of food. Since we’re super poor, coming here usually tends to be just for special occasions (aka birthdays).

    “Trust Me” Salad.

  • Stella’s
They’ve since moved to a bigger location (taking the place of what was the only Italian restaurant in town), but I believe they’re still under the same management, so the food is as good as ever! I came here with my friends for dinner during the 2014 Chocolate Festival!

    Passionfruit Creme Brulee!

  • When Pigs Fly Barbeque
They’ve got me sold on their stuffed baked potatoes with PULLED CHICKEN! <3! This is especially exciting to me because I can’t eat pork, and all the other places only ever have pulled pork. :O Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of that either, so…say hello to the beef brisket special with steamed kale + a baked sweet potato in terrible lighting!

Ashland, KY

  • Suplex Tacos
Also known as my inspiration for recreating Pollo Asada Fries–this place has super cheap prices (e.g. a tofu + chicken burrito stuffed with guacamole on a whole wheat wrap for $3.75?!)

  • Would you blate me?

  1. All of your dislikes…are my dislikes. High five for being 5’4″ and likes leveling up in basaddasery and Super Nintendo! :D I can relate to those! Oh and you know I already plan my vacations or trips around places to eat. Wade has already gotten used to this. Find a significant other who also enjoys trying new places to eat is all I have to say. ;) I liked this blog post! I can’t believe you’ve been on Yelp so long and reviewed so many places. I use Yelp and Urbanspoon a lot when I’m traveling to find good eats and always appreciate the reviews people leave.

    1. I knew there was a reason why we got along so well! ;P I definitely need to find a significant other who loves food as much as I do! (Think of all the food adventures and awesomeness!?!? *-*)

I haven’t been on Urbanspoon, but I basically use Yelp to help me plan my food adventures whenever I’m traveling! :D My parents think I have issues, haha.

  2. Oh jeez…I knew I was tired today. I just realized I typed “basaddasery” instead of the word “badassery”. WOW. I need to get to bed soon. Ha!

    1. hehehe, no worries! I got what you meant! Go get some sleep! ;P

P.S. My rotation got approved today!!! I know where I’ll be for 2 whole weeks in October! (Hoorayyyyyy! <3!)

  3. Haha! Your blate profile is spot on!!! I love that you claimed your proposal food. Who wants a ring when there is sashimi, right? That is so great that Soupervan donates a meal for every one purchased, love these initiatives! That candle on the sushi piece just speaks Farrah! Ha! Xx

    1. Indeed! ;P I love causes like that too! The people who ran Soupervan were super super nice! I hope they go back into operation again! I would totally trek to NJ just to visit!

  4. Man, now I’m super hungry!! Those places all look awesome!! I love Yelp and I’m the one in our group who researches all the food for any of our racecations. I gotta eat! :)

    seasons 52 (chain but good!)
Iron hill brewery (their sweet potato fries DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOL)
    Tortilla Press (Mexican)

    1. <3! I've never been to South Jersey, but I think I'd adore Healthy Garden! :D And sweet potato fries/breakfast foods! *-* I think we'd get along swimmingly! :P

hehehe, I piggybacked my friend back to the hotel once with the promise that he wouldn't puke on me (he hadn't really had all that much to drink, so it wasn't too much of a concern). I think the upper limit I've arbitrarily thrown on carrying drunk friends home = 180-200 lbs, depending on the distance (and their intoxicated state)! :O

  6. Um, THIS IS SOMETHING SO FANTASTIC! I’m starring it so I can come back and look at all of your yummies, and in case I go to those places. Just wow!

    1. Sushi makes my world go round! :D!

  8. Of course I would blate you Farrah! Hahahaha. Your dislikes and mine are identical. I’ve had way too many Stage 5 clingers and psychopaths in my life. Makes me wonder what I got up to in a past life to deserve it?! ;)

The Bay area has such fantastic food and restaurants, you really are lucky to have lived there for most of your life. :) I don’t quite know what to consider my home town these days to be honest!!! IN Toronto it was Fresh, in Sydney it was Iku for a cheap meal, Bodhi for an expensive meal, and in Chiang Mai it’s Anchan Vegetarian restaurant. :)
jess meddows recently posted…Ellie Cat’s Cafe BellMy Profile

    1. haha, I wonder the same, but I like to think that I’ve “done my time,” so maybe from here on out, good things/people will come my way! ;P

Agreed! I got so spoiled with the food diversity over there! I need to check out Australia someday! <3!! (+ I haven't been to Toronto in over a decade and a half! :o!) Your blog always makes me want to go travel the world. <3

  9. Omg I would blate you so hard. Sushi, bbq and mexican? let’s go!

    1. Woodstock’s!! I miss their apple cinnabread! My friends and I made it several summers ago whilst reminiscing about Davis, hahaha.

    1. hahaha, I’m not sure any newspaper would hire me to write food reviews though! I’m not good with describing food other than saying stuff like “it was delicious!” (Or when I get a little more creative, “it’s like having explosions of flavor bursting in your mouth!”). :P

  12. What a fun post! I enjoyed reading your blating profile, and I’m not a fan of psychopaths either

  20. Your dislikes have me laughing, I totally 100% agree as those are mine too:) Also love the, living on imaginary money, I remember my college days doing that too:)
So now I totally know who to come for if I am going to be traveling, to ask where to eat! I am the worlds pickiest eater, and when I visit new towns on vacation. Although I should step out of my comfort zone, I have a tendency to just play it safe and stick with food chains I know, and I know because of that I miss out on lots and lots of great places to eat!

Oh hells yes! I’ll totally be your go-to person for travel eats! :D I do have somewhat of a comfort zone too when it comes to food (mostly in relation to my food restrictions and whatnot), but I try to branch out when I can! A lot of hole-in-wall restaurants have been really great finds!

Thanks so much for linking up!

    1. hahaha, I think I like food probably a littttle too much! (They’re not all of eateries, but the majority of em’…heh. :D )

Thanks so much for hosting the linkup! :]! I love the traveling and the different themes, but since I don’t get to travel much anymore, the focus on hometowns makes it so I can actually participate! :]!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! :D

  25. Hello fellow Bay Area Yelper! I’m excited to add you on Yelp and get some Fremont area places on my list! My favorite places are all around San Jose, but I am a HUGE burger fanatic! Maybe I’ll see you at some Elite events this year! :)

    1. Hi!! :D That’d be really awesome! I’m currently country-trotting, so I’m off in the Kentucky/West Virginia area, but will hopefully be back in the bay area for at least a good part of the latter part of this year! I really want to go to an elite event! *-*

Burgers are wonderful! I’ve been craving them lately!
